Imagine living in a different time – a time in which African Americans were sold and owned as property or when women were not allowed to vote as citizens of the United States. Imagine living in a time when men had to sacrifice their own lives to gain independence for the people of this country. It is through the efforts of our country’s past heroes – through their diligence, courage, and leadership - that we enjoy the rights and freedoms that define our democracy. By learning about key historical figures throughout U.S. History, students will gain understanding of the life experiences, environments, and character traits that guided these significant individuals in their pursuit of freedom. Plan and Purpose This pathfinder addresses standards
SS3H2, SS3G2, and SS3CG2, which will teach students about historical figures who endeavored to expand the rights and freedoms of people in a democracy. The resources included can help a teacher develop a unit study or a student locate information on a specific topic. After learning about each key individual’s contribution to developing and sustaining democracy, students will be able to identify the character traits that drove these individuals forward. Students will also be able to explain the geographical and cultural environments in which each individual acted and the obstacles each had to overcome. By meeting these standards, students will have a better understanding and appreciation of our country’s history, its heroes, and their roles as responsible citizens of this country.

Georgia Performance Standards SS3H2 The student will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people’s rights
and freedoms in a democracy. a. Paul Revere (independence), Frederick Douglass (civil rights), Susan B. Anthony (women’s rights), Mary McLeod Bethune (education), Franklin D. Roosevelt (New Deal and World War II), Eleanor Roosevelt (United Nations and human rights), Thurgood Marshall (civil rights), Lyndon B. Johnson (Great Society and voting rights), and César Chávez (workers’ rights). b. Explain social barriers, restrictions, and obstacles that these historical figures had to overcome and describe how they overcame them.
SS3G2 The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the historical figures in SS3H2a. a. Identify on a political map specific locations significant to the life and times of these historical figures. b. Describe how place (physical and human characteristics) had an impact on the lives of these historical figures. c. Describe how each of these historical figures adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment. d. Trace examples of travel and movement of these historical figures and their ideas across time. e. Describe how the regions in which these historical figures lived affected their lives and had an impact on their cultural identification.
SS3CG2 The student will discuss the character of different historical figures in SS3H2a. a. Describe how the different historical figures in SS3H2a display positive character traits of cooperation, diligence, courage, and leadership. b. Explain how the historical figures in SS3H2a used positive character traits to support their beliefs in liberty, justice, tolerance, and freedom of conscience and expression. c. Explain how the historical figures in SS3H2a chose when to respect and accept authority.
