Life’s Reflections

Deacon Leon Richardson, Jr. was born on May 8, 1939, to Leon Richardson, Sr. and Annis Sommervile Richardson in Dumas, Arkansas. After a two-week fight against COVID-19, he departed this life on April 12,

2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ethel Lee Hollinshed-Carpenter, his brother Chester Lee Richardson (Veola) and his son Kenneth Drew (Carmalita).

Leon attended Reed Elementary school and Dumas High School in Dumas, Arkansas. He moved to Kansas City, Kansas with his family in 1955. Shortly thereafter, he married Grace Nichols and five children were born to this union.

He was employed by the K.C. Structure Steel Company in Argentine, KS for several years before being employed as a Welder, serving in the position as a Supervisor with Harlan Tow Tractor Corporation in Kansas City, KS until his retirement in 2004.

Leon began his journey with the Lord at a very early age. He attended Sanctified Church in Dumas, AR under the leadership of Pastor Lafore. As an adult Leon joined Bethel Church of God in Christ and was baptized by the late Elder T. J. Simmons. At one point he moved his membership for several years to Faith Mission Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of the late Elder Hubert Lambert, Sr., where he served on the Deacon Board,

Trustee Board, Finance Committee and a member of the Revival Choir.

Reuniting some years later with Bethel C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Elder James C. Bailey & Elder Chester

Z. McIntyre, Sr., he served in several roles including Chairman of the Deacon Board, Handy man, a member of the Adult Choir, Men’s Choir and the Family Choir, Trustee Board Chairman, Sunday School teacher, President and teacher of Y.P.W.W. (Young People Willing Workers) and V.B.S. (Vacation Bible School) Superintendent for over 30 years.

He was one who was gifted by God with so many gifts and talents which allowed him to be a blessing to so many people, near and far. Leon was always willing to do for others without expecting anything in return.

He had a love for fishing and camping and as the weather would break, you would find him and Gladys, his wife of 36 years (whom he courted for 5 years prior to asking for her hand in marriage) on the “creek bank” throwing out their fishing lines! One of the most memorable family gatherings that he thoroughly enjoyed, was fishing and

camping on Memorial Day weekend, which he made sure reservations were made at the first of each year. He had a calling on his life in ministry by being a Servant of Christ, spreading the Good News to others while conversing with them but he never officially accepted the title. And finally, he missed his calling of being a comedian, because he could make you laugh with his wittiness!!

Leon was co-owner of L & G Welding, LLC in which he was the Master Welder, creating smokers which turned out to be some of the most prodigious, astoundingly beautiful smokers, that would cook slow and even, without any hot spots. People would come from miles away to purchase one of his smokers, as well as asking him to modi-fy a grill that needed his touch of perfection. He was also gifted with the knowledge of repairing vehicles from basic

to intricate issues. Owning several rental properties, he was the Landlord, Handy Man, Carpenter, Painter and the Plumber, if he couldn’t complete the job he had a vast amount of resources that he had formed a bond with, to get the job done!

sas City, KS, Yolanda Holley of Kansas City, MO; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Morgan of Little Rock, AR, Leona Thomas of Kansas City, KS; two maternal aunts, Earlene McColyn of Oakland, CA and Elizabeth McColyn of Oakland, CA; one Goddaughter, Monyca Henderson (Todd) of Shawnee, KS, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, lots of children that they acquired over the years, other relatives, brothers and sisters in Christ, and friends.

My Dad was such an inspiration to me. He has been more than a father, and I will always cherish his love, guidance, support and especially his knowledge about God’s Word. Some of our thought-provoking spirit-filled conversations would challenge me to study the Bible even more. He was

such a giver of himself, never one to be selfish but always being selfless! I’m grateful for the 40+ years that he took care of and loved my Mother. Dad was an amazing role-model for me, my husband, my siblings and all the genera-

tions behind us, he was truly a Godly man who lead by example. Rest in peace and power Dad…..I’ll see you on the other side!

Jerron Wyatt, Sr. Pops has always been my go-to! He was very knowledgea-

ble about so many things as well as having tools and equipment readily available for whatever the situation called for. I really looked forward to camping and fishing with him every year. I appreciate him being a “father” like

no one else could be to me. I miss him now and forever….in that order!

23rd Psalms when I was about four or five years old and how to say my prayers before bed! Throughout my life you have always been there for me even if you told me no to things I asked for, I knew it was for the best. Thank you, Daddy, for showing all of us the true

definition of a God-fearing man. I will miss our talks and fishing days, and seeing you out driving the black truck and hearing people say how you’ve blessed them. I have so many memories that will keep me laughing and crying and I’ll always have you right here in my heart, this is not the end. I’ll see you one day!! I
