Climate action and sustainable development

• When drafting your proposal, please specify your project's expected contribution to climate action and sustainable development objectives, if applicable.

Climate action includes: • mitigating climate change (helping to cut greenhouse gas

emissions) • adapting to the impact of climate change by building resilience to

phenomena such as flooding, droughts and other extreme weather events

• contributing to understanding the causes of climate change.

Sustainable Development: • development that meets the needs of the present without

compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs within the planet's physical boundaries. Sustainable development has economic, social and environmental dimensions.

• Ci sono diversi tipi di standard . In sostanza , gli standard sono i requisiti e / o le raccomandazioni in materia di prodotti, sistemi , processi o servizi . Gli standard possono anche essere un modo per descrivere un metodo di misura o di prova o di stabilire una terminologia comune all'interno di un settore specifico .

• Gli standard sono sviluppati e definiti attraverso un processo di condivisione delle conoscenze e costruiti su un consenso tra gli esperti tecnici nominati dalle parti interessate e altri stakeholders - tra le imprese, i consumatori e le associazioni ambientaliste, o altri .

• Un esempio di standard largamente usato è il formato A4 dei fogli.

DISSEMINAZIONE, EXPLOITATION E COMUNICAZIONE: DIFFERENZE

La Dissemination è la diffusione al pubblico dei risultati di un progetto attraverso qualsiasi media. Può sembrare un attività passiva ma non lo è. E’ necessario infatti fare anche attività di promozione o di awareness-raising al fine di incentivare l’utilizzo del risultato da parte dei vari gruppi di stakeholders potenzialmente interessari (altri ricercatori, industrie, attori commerciali o policy makers)

L’exploitation rappresenta l’utilizzo (diretto / indiretto) dei risultati in attività di ricerca, che non fanno parte del progetto, così come l'utilizzo per un ulteriore sviluppo, realizzazione e commercializzazione di un prodotto o di un processo o per creare e fornire un servizio, o nelle attività di normalizzazione. Quest'ultimo può tra l'altro: • Generare entrate supplementari; • Promuovere l'innovazione aperta; • Aumentare l'accesso e la condivisione dei dati di ricerca e

pubblicazioni; • Generare possibilità di collaborazione nella ricerca e

nell'insegnamento; • Migliorare la visibilità e ottenere pubblicità; • Ampliare il mercato del lavoro per gli studenti.

Per Communication si intende usare misure strategiche e mirate per promuovere le azione del progetto e i suoi risultati ad un gran numero di spettatori, compresi media e opinione pubblica, creando un dialogo bidirezionale. L'obiettivo è quello di raggiungere la società nel suo complesso e, in particolare, per alcuni un pubblico specifico, dimostrando come i finanziamenti dell'UE contribuiscano ad affrontare le sfide della società.

Come la Communication viene considerata in proposta Le attività di comunicazione devono essere strategicamente pianificate e realizzate a partire dall'inizio del progetto. Esse devono essere basate su un piano di comunicazione globale, con obiettivi chiari (per i diversi target di pubblico che vanno oltre la comunità del progetto, compresi i media e l'opinione pubblica) e piani concreti per attività di comunicazione (compresa la descrizione di ogni attività e la sua tempistica). Le attività di comunicazione dovrebbero essere in grado di trasmettere la ricerca in modo non tecnico a diversi gruppi di persone. Si dovrebbe affrontare la prospettiva pubblica dei finanziamenti dell'UE per la ricerca e l'innovazione. Ciò significa considerare aspetti quali:

• cooperazione all'interno di un consorzio europeo tra le organizzazioni con sede in

diversi paesi dell'UE (che mostra come i migliori risultati possono essere raggiunti attraverso la cooperazione)

• eccellenza scientifica • contribuire alla competitività e contribuendo a soddisfare le sfide sociali (ad

esempio impatto sulla vita di tutti i giorni, un migliore utilizzo dei risultati e spill-over per i responsabili politici, l'industria e la comunità scientifica).

Example a) Dissemination and exploitation of results

Once started, dissemination planning will be a continuous process in the XxXXxX project. This approach will allow to tackle the dissemination challenges in an efficient way and with prior agreement on the key actions among the project beneficiaries. In particular, the key elements of our dissemination strategy will be:

Goals: to determine and document the goals of the dissemination effort for XxXXxX project.

Improve the knowledge and metrics of specific waste streams and waste management methods and technologies in Europe

Improve in the knowledge of costs and performances along value chains, informing a pricing policy for waste management in line with the waste hierarchy

Support the EU policies on the waste field.

Objectives: to associate each goal with one or more objectives that clarifies what we try to accomplish through the dissemination activities.

Users: to describe the scope and characteristics of the "potential users" that dissemination activities are designed to reach for each objectives;

Several target group: researchers, policy makings, students, industries, citizens

Content: to identify, at least, the basic elements of the projected content that will be disseminate to each of the potential user groups identified;

Every result provide by the XxXXxX project

Sources: to identify the primary source or sources that each potential user group is already tied into or most respects as an information source;

Channels: to describe the media through which the content of XxXXxX project message can best be best delivered to potential users and describe the capabilities and resources that will be required of potential users to access the content for each medium to be used.

Access: to describe how XxXXxX project will promote access to relevant information and how users will archive information that may be requested at a later date .

Barriers: to identify potential barriers that may interfere with the targeted users' access or utilization and develop actions to reduce these barriers.

The success of the XxXXxX project dissemination efforts will be evaluated through an iterative process. It is necessary to consider the effect that the dissemination strategies have on getting our message to end users. Dissemination is not a one-time activity; rather, it is a long-term relationship with users that will provide ongoing feedback to help us to improve our message.

Example b) Communication activities b) Communication activities The communication activities will aim to improve the brand awareness, share the mission and highlight the European dimension of the XxXXxX project. All the communication activities will be regulated throught the Communication and Dissemination Plan developed at the beginning of the project (task 6.1). Furthermore, the dissemination and communication plan will manage the knowledge among the beneficiaries and guide the communication of the project activities to the external audience such as stakeholders, policy maker, researchers, industry and citizens interested to the waste challenge. The Communication and Dissemination Plan will define the communication and business goals, the target audiences, the main messages to be conveyed and the strategy to be adopted to overcome the barriers that could negatively affect the communication of the XxXXxX project. All communication activities will be developed in according of the communication and dissemination plan and with the active participation of all beneficiaries. Very importantly, constant update and feedbacks from the target groups and especially from all beneficiaries involved in the dissemination activities will be collected and taken into account for the further activities. Messaggio

• Identifica cosa vuoi trasferire al tuo / ai tuoi target o cosa dovrebbero sapere

• Una buona strategia è di evidenziare uno o più concetti chiave che esprimono il raggiungimento di un beneficio o, più in generale, di un aspetto positivo.

• E’ fondamentale ricordare però che la comunicazione è efficace soltanto se emittente e ricevente danno lo stesso significato al messaggio

• Modula i messaggi sulla base dei tuoi obiettivi e del target con cui

Non è sufficiente essere chiari ma anche immedesimarsi con chi riceve il messaggio che stai inviando

familiarità / pertinenza: quanto il messaggio chiave è vicino, in termini conoscitivi, all’interlocutore: se è troppo “vicino” rischia di essere banale, se è troppo “lontano” viene percepito come incomprensibile

rilevanza: quanto il messaggio colpisce gli interessi o le preoccupazioni dell’interlocutore. Se il messaggio è lontano dagli interessi dell’interlocutore, risulterà privo di interesse. Se è molto vicino può “colpire” in modo imprevedibile l’interlocutore.

What is open access?

Self-archiving (the Green OA) The author archives an electronic copy of a peer-reviewed publication (author final copy or publisher copy) in an institutional or subject repository at the time of publication, after which it is freely available to everybody under specific license.

• A repository is an online database operating under specific technical standards that allows the institution to manage, preserve, disseminate, showcase its scientific output.

• The repository is a valuable tool in an institution’s research information system and evaluation process, and one that offers added value services for the scientific community.

Open access publishing (the Gold OA)

Authors publish their scholarship in open access journals or monograph series. These publications

are freely available to the end users on the Internet.

• Copyright is usually retained by the authors.

• Open access publications follow the same processes as toll access publications (i.e. peer review), but provide open access to the content of the publications.

• There is no correlation between the quality of a publication and the access to it.

• Open access publishing often entails costs (author processing fees), usually covered by funders/employers.

• Open access publishing has led to new business models in scholarly publishing

Self-archiving and publishing

Self-archiving and Open access publishing are NOT the same thing, but complementary

• Purpose of self-archiving is to curate one’s scientific output in the repository and provide access to them

• Gold open access is a mode of publishing and follows the processes of publishing

Open access to research data Research data' refers to information, in particular facts or numbers, collected to be examined and considered and as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation. examples of data include • statistics, • results of experiments, • measurements, • observations resulting from fieldwork, • survey results, • interview recordings and images.

• How much data will be generated for this research? • How long will the data be collected and how often will it

change? • Are you using data that someone else produced? If so,

ensure that the data management plan is carried out?


Documentation, organization, and storage • What documentation will you be creating in order to make the data

understandable by other researchers? • Are you using metadata that is standard to your field? How will the

metadata be managed and stored? • What file formats will be used? Do these formats conform to an

open standard and/or are they proprietary? • Are you using a file format that is standard to your field? If not, how

will you document the alternative you are using? • What directory and file naming convention will be used? • What are your local storage and backup procedures? Will this data

require secure storage? • What tools or software are required to read or view the data?


Access, sharing, and re-use

• Who has the right to manage this data? Is it the responsibility of the PI, student, lab, MIT, or funding agency?

• What data will be shared, when, and how? • Does sharing the data raise privacy, ethical, or confidentiality concerns? Do you

have a plan to protect or anonymize data, if needed? • Who holds intellectual property rights for the data and other information created

by the project? Will any copyrighted or licensed material be used? Do you have permission to use/disseminate this material?

• Are there any patent- or technology-licensing-related restrictions on data sharing associated with this grant? The Technology Licensing Office (TLO) can provide this information.

• Will this research be published in a journal that requires the underlying data to accompany articles?

• Will there be any embargoes on the data? • Will you permit re-use, redistribution, or the creation of new tools, services, data

sets, or products (derivatives)? Will commercial use be allowed?


Archiving

• How will you be archiving the data? Will you be storing it in an archive or repository for long-term access? If not, how will you preserve access to the data?

• Is a discipline-specific repository available? If not, you could consider depositing your data into DSpace@MIT. Email us at [email protected] if you’re interested in using DSpace@MIT to store your data.

• How will you prepare data for preservation or data sharing? Will the data need to be anonymized or converted to more stable file formats?

• Are software or tools needed to use the data? Will these be archived?

• How long should the data be retained? 3-5 years, 10 years, or forever?

FP7 post-grant OA publishing funds pilot

• The European Commission has launched the FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot earlier this year, https://www.openaire.eu/postgrantoapilot, to fund Open Access publishing fees for publications arising from finished FP7 projects through the OpenAIRE project. As well as for Book Processing Charges, this Pilot provides funding for Open Access Article Processing Charges (APCs) for FP7 projects up to two years after they end.

• This FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot provides an additional instrument to improve access to research results from FP7 projects, but does not affect authors' choice on how their project publications are made Open Access.
