The exodus seems to have started a bit early this year. Nevertheless it was interesting to discover yet more Rotary activities via the talk on Rotary fellowships, particularly Cricket, from Graeme Amoore. It was also good to see Judi Hall back for a second visit. If you haven’t introduced yourself to Judi yet, make sure you do next time. Also a somewhat quieter week this week for your Presi- dent, who has only been to three Rotary related meetings instead of the usual number. Our plans for a less formal changeover night are well in hand, and sign-up sheets will be circulated starting next week. This Week’s Speaker; Graeme Amoore Topic; Rotary Fellowships

Graeme is the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Moorleigh Moorabbin and spoke about Fellowships and Global Network Groups (GNG) with particular reference to the International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians Quote: Paul Harris once said “Fellowship is wonderful. It illuminates Life’s Pathway It spreads Good Cheer And is worth a High Price.” Rotary Fellowships and GNGs are groups of Rotarians, Spouses and Rotaractors who unite to;

Share a common interest in recreational activities (eg Sport, Hobbies)

Share Vocational Development with like - minded peo-ple

Make new friends Worldwide Explore new opportunities for service Have Fun & enhance Rotary experiences

Amongst the benefits of Rotary Fellowships and GNGs are

New, long lasting friendships nationally & internationally Assists World Understanding & Peace Assists membership recruitment/retention Increased Rotary enjoyment New Rotary ideas for projects/fundraising

The first Fellowship, in Esperanto, was founded in 1928, while Yachting, founded in 1947 is the longest continuing group (now in Melbourne). There are around 70 groups in all. A full list may be found at;

http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/

fellowships_flier_en.pdf The Fellowships operate as follows;

Independent of RI, own Rules & Admin. Self funded, own fees, newsletters/websites Active in 3 Countries or more to qualify.

The International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians (IFCR) was formed at the RI Convention in Melbourne in 1993 at a meeting held in the MCG Long Room. It is active in most major cricket playing nations plus others e.g. Australia, NZ, GB&I, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa &

Nepal, USA, Fiji. In Australia over 220 members from Cairns to Busselton and in all states. It is strongest in regional and coun-try areas. Poor in capital cities. Graeme joined at inaugural meeting in 1993, but not active until 1997. He was Australia Secretary for 10 years then World Secretary. IFCR Australia activities include

Overseas Tours – Home Hosted, UK, NZ SA, India. 3- 4 weeks duration includes sightseeing.

World Festivals every 2 or 3 years. Seven so far. Incoming tours. Selected parts of Australia. 2 -3 weeks.

Home hosting, sightseeing etc. Australian activities.

Festival every 2 years. District/inter-district/regional games. Eg Hume & Hov-ell, Bradman Oval- Bowral. Conference games eg 9800 v 9810.

Graeme have been on 11 overseas trips so far, mostly with his wife (not India) and participated in many incoming tour, local games and Australian Festivals. The overseas tours are a marvellous opportunity to see Rotary activities in other parts of the world at first hand. Vapi/Daman, India was the venue for the 7th World Rotary Cricket Festival in February 2012. Twelve teams participated and included Australia (2 teams), New Zealand, England (GB&I), Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India (6 teams) Vapi is approximately 180 kms north of Mumbai and is the home Club of the current Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee. All accommodation and functions were held in near-by Daman Over 250 people attended the Festival including a party of 40 players and partners from Australia. A special Gala night and Charity auction was held during the Festival with many items donated by visiting teams. Over $10,000 was raised on the night for various Rotary projects including ROMAC. A highlight of the week for some attendees occurred on the final day. On arrival for a game at the Daman Stadium be-tween Australia and New Zealand it was discovered that there was a Polio Plus medical clinic operating in part of the Stadium. The medical staff and the Mum’s with their young babies were very obliging in allowing visitors to view the administering of the oral vaccine plus the other vaccinations. Naturally every-body was most grateful for Rotary’s role in this great program. This was truly Rotary in action. Further details on Rotary Fellowships may be found in this em-bedded Rotary Fellowship Handbook (I hope Ed.).

District Conference 2013 Wangaratta Friday 15 to Sunday 17 March

Theme; “A Touch of Green” This week we visited the city of Wangaratta, the conference site for next year. It is approximately 270 Kilometres and took us 3 hours from Black Rock and the same time home. The venue we are booked in for the conference, is Hermitage Motor Inn, 7 Cusack Street, Wangaratta 3677. (Corner Mackay &Cusack)

Email [email protected] Web www.hermitagemotorinn.com.au It is a nice quiet motel in a side street and its owners are Jenny and Graeme Bannam who will be happy to take your booking. There are 18 Double rooms; nine upstairs and nine downstairs, allowing us 36 members accommodation. Queen rooms are $135 per night. Minimum booking is two nights (Friday and Saturday). This does not include breakfast however in room breakfast is available if ordered. The room includes toaster and electric jug, basic glassware, cutlery and crockery, but not a cereal bowl. You will need to contact Jenny or Graeme Bannam on 03 5721 7444 and pay a deposit equal to one night to secure your room. There are already rooms booked and they will only hold the rooms until September 2012. After that, accommodation will be scarce as the town seems pretty well booked. The motel is only a 4/5 minute walk from the Wangaratta conference centre. The main street and shops are a 5 minute walk away. For the golfers in the group, Thursday is golf day and I am hoping to arrange some sort of tour/event

for the non-golfers to occupy the day, and a night time event for that night. Conference starts after lunch on Friday for those coming up that day, and finishes after lunch on Sun-

day. Further details will be advised as the program becomes available. We are only 15 kilometres from Milawa and Oxley, home to Brown Bros and Sam Miranda Wineries, Mi-lawa Cheese Factory/ bakery/ restaurant, Milawa Mustards and Milawa Olive shop. There is also an Apiary producing quality honey in the same area. Beechworth is 35 kilometres away, however if there was enough interest, perhaps we could get a small bus or maxicab, price permitting. James and Megan On to Conference organisers

Church of Rodel, Outer Heb-rides Photograph by Jim Richardson, National Geographic The 15th-century church of Rodel on the Isle of Lewis, built for the warlike chiefs of the MacLeods, towers over the sea lochs of Scot-land's Outer Hebrides. Nothing in early modern Britain, from its cit-ies to its remotest corners, was more political than religion. The church in every parish—nearly always the most imposing build-ing—was as much a symbol of worldly control as a shrine to God.
