• Three years ago I asked three local university CS professors* to work with me on getting National Science Foundation funding to reshape computer science education in the Chicago Public Schools. My vision was [and is] that every high school student has access to at least one true CS class.

• Our group decided to seek a National Science Foundation research grant. I am happy to say that after two very thoughtful rejections, our third proposal [Collaborative Research: Type I: Taste of Computing: Adding a CS Entree to the Education Choices in a Large Urban School District ] has been accepted for funding!! All three years of our research proposal have been fully approved and funded at $756,000!!! As a high school teacher and CSTA member, I am very proud to be listed as a CO-PI on this grant.**

• The plan includes training all Chicago Public CS teachers in the new Exploring Computer Science curriculum.

• The NSF grant will also enable teachers to earn college credit for the training they receive. This grant will help make it possible for us to transform Computer Science education and instruction for the nearly 450,000 Chicago Public School students.

2. Tammy Pirmann: Believed that CS should be a fundamental part of education for all students……– High school CS teacher in Springfield School

District, PA.– District requirement: outdated computer

technology course but no CS course requirement• Worked with principal and then district coordinator

and then school board to replace the tech course with CS.

Tammy's story• On December 2nd, 2010 the CSTA-Philadelphia

Area Chapter received a Congressional Citation that acknowledged the dedication of the Philadelphia area Computer Science educators in promoting Computer Science education to the benefit of countless students and businesses who require a computer literate workforce for their success and the prosperity of their region.

Tammy's story• The citation concludes with: "On behalf of the

constituents of the 7th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, I commend the Philadelphia Area Computer Science Educators for their dedication to inspiring young Americans to pursue a field of study of enormous importance to their nation and the world." –Joe Sestak (Congressman)

3. Joel Adams: Professor at Calvin College– Learned about the lack of CS courses at the HS level at a

Consortium for Computer Sciences in Colleges (CCSC) Conference.

– Met with his local representative (MI). His representative championed support for CS ED week http://www.csedweek.org/
