Input and Output: What’s the difference?

In and Out are opposites. This is something to keep in mind when

considering Input and Output.

Input Devices

Input devices put data or information INTO the computer.

A mouse is an input device. It tells the computer what to select.

What are other input devices?

inputs the data into the computer.

These devices take images and convert them into electrical signals a computer can understand.

The camera takes pictures and the webcam takes videos that are sent into the computer.

Microphone

When you type on a keyboard, the buttons are converted into electronic signals that go into the computer and tell it what to display on the monitor.

Microphones convert the noises you make into electronic signals that go into the computer so it can store the sounds and play them back. Some computers have microphones you can see, like the picture. Others have microphones built into them.

Output Devices

Output devices send data or information OUT OF the computer.

A monitor is an output device. It displays what the computer is doing.

HeadphonesThese devices project sound to a person (headphones) or a room (speakers). They convert electronic signals from the computer into something you can hear, and send the sounds to you.

Output Device

PrinterThe printer takes signals from the computer and sends out documents or pictures for you to use.

Other Devices

Internal hardware components are often both an input and output device, all in one. Sometimes, they need to be combined with another component, like speakers or a monitor, to be output devices.
