STAR-SPANGLED BANNEROn September 14, 1814,

Francis Scott Key composed thelyrics to “The Star-SpangledBanner” after witnessing themassive overnight Britishbombardment of Fort McHenry inMaryland during the War of 1812.Key, an American lawyer, watchedthe siege while under detainmenton a British ship and penned thefamous words after observing withawe that Fort McHenry’s flagsurvived the 1,800-bomb assault.

After circulating as a handbill, the patriotic lyrics were publishedin a Baltimore newspaper onSeptember 20, 1814. Key’s wordswere later set to the tune of “ToAnacreon in Heaven,” a popularEnglish song. Throughout the19th century, “The Star-SpangledBanner” was regarded as thenational anthem by mostbranches of the U.S. armed forcesand other groups, but it was notuntil 1916, and the signing of anexecutive order by PresidentWoodrow Wilson, that it wasformally designated as such. InMarch 1931, Congress passed anact confirming Wilson’spresidential order, and on March3 President Hoover signed itinto law.

The Only 2 States That Don’tObserve Daylight

Saving TimeThe United States officially

adopted Daylight Saving Time (yes, not “Savings”) as part of theUniform Time Act of 1966. Beforethat, states could come up with theirown versions of the practice. In fact,Iowa once had 23 different pairs ofstart and end dates throughout thestate. This new law brought muchneeded order to the country’s clocks, but it didn’t require all states tocomply. And so, two stateseventually opted out: Hawaii andArizona.

ST. JOSEPHFirst appearing in the gospels of

Matthew and Luke, Saint Joseph wasthe earthly father of Jesus Christ andthe husband of the Virgin Mary. WhoWas Saint Joseph?

Venerated as a saint in manyChristian sects, Saint Joseph is abiblical figure who is believed to havebeen the corporeal father of JesusChrist. Joseph first appears in the Biblein the gospels of Matthew and Luke; inMatthew, Joseph’s lineage is traced backto King David. According to the Bible,Joseph was born circa 100 B.C.E. andlater wed the Virgin Mary, Jesus’smother. He died in Israel circa 1 A.D..

After marrying Mary, Joseph foundthat she was already pregnant, andbeing “a just man and unwilling to puther to shame” (Matt. 1:19), he decidedto divorce her quietly, knowing that ifhe did so publicly, she could be stonedto death.

An angel, however, came to Josephand told him that the child Marycarried was the son of God and wasconceived by the Holy Spirit, so Josephkept Mary as his wife.

After Jesus’s birth in Bethlehem, anangel came to Joseph again, this time towarn him and Mary about King Herodof Judaea and the violence he wouldbring down upon the child. Josephthen fled to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, and the angel appeared again, tellingJoseph that Herod had died andinstructing him to return to theHoly Land.

Avoiding Bethlehem and possibleactions by Herod’s successor, Joseph,Mary and Jesus settled in Nazareth, inGalilee. The Gospels describe Joseph asa “tekton,” which traditionally hasmeant “carpenter,” and it is assumedthat Joseph taught his craft to Jesus inNazareth. At this point, however,Joseph is never mentioned again byname in the Bible—although the storyof Jesus in the temple includes areference to “both his parents.”
