Dear members and friends

Let us use the editorial of the IMZ December Newsletter to take a look back at the events connections and discoveries that marked IMZrsquos 2013 It has been a very eventful and exciting yearhellip

Together with our long-standing co-operation partners ndash the City of Vien-na the International Academy of Television Arts amp Sciences the ITF Golden Prague Festival WOMEX ClassicalNEXT and the Austrian Honorary Consu-late in Yekaterinburg the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow ndash we have once again organized and celebrated a good deal of eye-catching and impactful events There are the Avant Premiegravere Screenings together with midem in Cannes various open-air Music Film Festivals for a general public on the one hand and film screenings for the industry on the other hand the Inter-national Semi-Final Judgingrsquos for the International Emmyreg Awards the 1st edition of our IMZ Academy and many morehellip We are proud of and grateful for another year of fruitful and interesting co-operations which have once again made an important contribution to promoting and fostering the cause of the IMZ

Furthermore we owe thanks to our new colleagues and various new partners in the cities of Barcelona Sochi Iasi Osaka the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles and the Zurich Festival Wagner Greenhouse for which we cu-rated made-to-measure film festival programmes the San Francisco Dance Film Festival for the great pleasure of jointly organizing dance screen 2013 in San Francisco the European Video Dance Heritage project an important new partner we brought on board with the joint objective of setting up a unique European audio-visual dance memory

Last but not least my heartfelt thanks go to all friends and members of the IMZ family Together with your support and dedication we advance the arts in the audio-visual media keeping it kicking ndash with music and dance

EVDH CONFERENCE RESEARCHING THE FUTURE OF DANCE ON FILM

These were three exciting days of panels discussions meetings and get-togethers at the European Vid-eo Dance Heritage Conference at Tanzhaus nrw in Duumlsseldorf We en-joyed listening to the latest industry news and updates by experts from the various fields of dance on film as well as catching up with friends and colleagues At the conference around 40 speakers contributed to capture Video Dance Heritage from as various aspects as arts media technology politics or law Work-shops focussed on the conditions of digitalisation communication and cultural education as well as follow-ing the path from the archive to the audience

The overall goal of the EVDH project is to structure a European memory of dance through video and to transmit this heritage to younger generations considering its political economic technical legal and educational di-

13 ndash 15 November 2013 | Duumlsseldorf Germanymensions The project follows three main goals First to raise awareness among professionals and institu-tions on the need to promote a pol-icy to preserve and transmit video dance Second to help profession-als to understand overall conditions when producing audio-visual materi-al like recording choreographies re-garding copyright intellectual prop-erty or image rights

Following the third goal ndash to develop new creations which contribute to a European Dance Memory through shared experiences ndash we are look-ing forward to the next big activity in this project An interdisciplinary video workshop held in Madrid from 26 May ndash 1 June 2014 in association with The Higher Dance Institute of The Rey Juan Carlos University The workshop invites choreographers performers musicians scriptwrit-ers image technicians or film edi-tors providing hands-on advice by

international experts in media pro-ductions specialising in dance video creation The results of the workshop will be presented at The Reina Sofia National Art Museum Stick around for more details to follow

The IMZ Academy is an initiative to enhance intensive exchange be-tween renowned experts and young professionals in the field of music and dance media production In a sequence of workshops the IMZ Academy sets the scene to encour-age the passing on of expertise to promising new talents Experienced practitioners and key players of the industry ndash producers broadcasters distributors as well as Internet pro-fessionals ndash share their knowledge in a series of master classes courses lectures and apprenticeships The focus is set on the production of cur-rent programmes encompassing a wide range of related subjects Following the successful 1st edition of the IMZ Academy at ITF Golden Prague a feedback meeting with

IMZ President Arild Erikstad IMZ Vice-President Henk van der Meulen and Peter Maniura Director of the 1st edition of the IMZ Academy took place at the IMZ office in ViennaFor the next editions of the IMZ Academy to be held in 2014 the IMZ is currently developing and design-ing three different course modules ndash a theoretical module held by hand-

picked international experts consist-ing of lectures about the many ques-tions and issues to be handled during the various stages of the production process and the joint work on case studies

ndash a practical module including an on-the-spot production of an au-dio-visual music programme as main part of the skill-based course super-vised by world-leading directors and

ndash an apprenticeship module which shall provide the participant with the unique opportunity to actively take part in an internationally renowned classical music production

The Film Festival at Wiener Rathaus-platz was first organized in 1991 and is the largest festival of its kind worldwide Since the mid-90s Vien-na Music Film Festivals following this example have been organized worldwide with the IMZ and various partners and successfully travelled to Eastern and Central Europe and as far as Japan attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors

On the occasion of the 20th Osaka European Film Festival taking place in the biggest department store in Osaka in Hankyu Umeda a co-op-eration with the IMZ was started to organize the 1st Vienna Music Film Festival at the Festival Square in Osaka Over 6000 people were de-lighted enjoying the Summer Night Concert Schoumlnbrunn 2007 on the huge 40m2 vision board The free concert screening capturing the Vi-

enna Philharmonic Orchestra con-ducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev fascinated viewers shoppers and passers-by not only with high-quali-ty music of famous pieces from The Nutcracker and Swan Lake but also with amazing wide-angle shots and close-up views The audience was excited by the daily screenings The

New Release On DVD Gloria In Excelsis Deo ndash Festive Christmas Music

In a festive and seasonal production the Saxony Philharmonic Wind Or-chestra conducted by Thomas Clam-or perform works by Haumlndel and various other composers such as Schumann Tchaikovsky Mendels-sohn and Humperdinck ndash on AC-CENTUS Musiclsquos Christmas DVD Gloria in Excelsis Deo Renowned so-prano Ruth Ziesak can be heard as a soloist in this live recording from the Church of St Mary in Marienberg in the Erzgebirge The Saxony Philharmonic Wind Or-chestra is the only orchestra amongst the German cultural orchestras that was specifically founded to play wind music

In the year 2013 the European Music Council (EMC) is celebrating a dou-ble anniversary the 40+10 jubilee In 2003 ten years ago the EMC was registrated under German law as an association (eV) based in Bonn Germany Furthermore roughly 40 years ago the origins of the EMC were laid out in the foundation of the regional group for Europe of the In-ternational Music Council (IMC) bdquoIts goals lie in the understanding of the people of Europe through music [] music can play a decisive role for the societal development of a peace-ful diverse and integrative Europeldquo (Stef Coninx Chairman EMC)

The EMC therefore advocates on local national and European levels for an appropriate framework res-pecting equal rights and opportuni-ties for music music professionals and access to music The European Music Council serves its members by advocating for the societal and political significance of musical di-versity in Europe and hence plays a key role in supporting the European communities that want to celebrate their music It provides exceptional value to its membership by building knowledge creating networking op-portunities supporting and enhan-cing the visibility of projects that help sustain peoplelsquos participation in music and cultural life

28 pianists will compete for the International Telekom Beethoven Competition Bonn 2013 between 6 and 14 December The 11 female and 17 male participants are aged be-tween 20 and 32 and come from 13 nationsThe young pianists will compete in three rounds from 6 December be-fore the final on 14 December At the core of the programme they have to perform Ludwig van Beethovenrsquos oeuvre In every round his work is put into relation to a different mu-sical era Baroque German Roman-tic and the Modern era In the final round the remaining three partici-pants will perform a piano concerto by Beethoven accompanied by the Beethoven Orchester BonnThe first prize is 30000- EUR the second prize is 20000- EUR and third prize is 10000- EUR There is also an audience prize the chamber

INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COUNCIL

On 25 November 2013 Paul Dujardin (Belgium) was elected President of the International Music Council for a renewable mandate of two years He replaces Frans de Ruiter from The Netherlands who had served as president of the organisation since October 2009 Paul Dujardin is CEO and artistic director of the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels a multidiscipli-nary and interdisciplinary arts center dedicated to music visual art pho-tography film theater dance litera-ture and architecture He dedicates his special interest to creating dialogue between the arts and the political spheres He has succeeded in developing BOZAR as an Agora a platform to initiate de-bate between citizens the arts deci-sion-makers and other sectors

As President of the International Mu-sic Council Paul Dujardin will lead a 12-member Executive Board made up of representatives from Africa the Americas the Arab World Asia and Europe

In April 2014 the Orpheus Institute in Ghent Belgium will be organiz-ing entrance examinations for the docARTES programme 2014-2015 (commencing September 2014)

They invite all artists musicians composers and improvisers with a keen interest in research and gen-erating new musical knowledge through their own practice to apply for the 2014-2015 docARTES pro-gramme hosted at Orpheus In-stituut in Ghent (Belgium) before 15 January 2014
