Dear Members and Friends,

Letususetheeditorialof theIMZActivityReport2013totakea lookbackattheevents,connectionsanddiscoveriesthatmarkedIMZ’s2013.Ithasbeenaveryeventfulandexcitingyear.

Together with our long-standing co-operation partners – the City ofVienna,theAustrianHonoraryConsulateinYekaterinburg,theAustrianCultural Forum in Moscow, the International Academy of Television,Arts&Sciences,theITFGoldenPragueFestival,WOMEXandClassic-al:NEXT–wehaveonceagainorganized,andcelebrated,agooddealof eye-catching and impactful events. There are the Avant PremièreScreeningstogetherwithmideminCannes,variousopen-airmusicfilmfestivalsforageneralpublicontheonehandandfilmscreeningsfortheindustryontheotherhand,theInternationalSemi-FinalJudgingsfortheInternationalEmmy®,the1steditionofourIMZAcademy,andmanymore…Weareproudofandgratefulforanotheryearoffruitfulandin-terestingco-operations,whichhaveonceagainmadeanimportantcon-tributiontopromotingandfosteringthecauseoftheIMZ.

TheIMZ–InternationalMusic+MediaCentre,foundedundertheaegisofUNESCOin1961andbasedinVienna,isaglobalassociationdedicatedtotheworldwidedevelopment,disseminationandpromotionofmusicanddancethroughtheaudio-visualmedia.

The professional umbrella organisation and networking platform actsas an interface between leading international producers, distributors,broadcastersofculturalprogrammes,operahouses,educationalinsti-tutionsandrecordlabelsfocusingonclassical,contemporaryandworldmusic, focusingonclassical,contemporaryandworldmusic,onjazz,andonclassicalandcontemporarydance.

TheIMZisaone-stopshopforanyonewithinthevaluechainfrommusicanddancecreationtothebuyingpublic.Formembersitisanadvant-ageousnetwork, a forum fordiscussion, theplatform for showcasingproductionsandexchangingindustry-relevant information,adatabaseanda lobbyinggroupaiming tomakea realcontribution to thebusi-nessesofitsmembers.

Withtheintentiontoenhanceco-operationamongstthevariousplayerswithinthemediauniverse,theIMZhasestablishedanessentialnetworkthathasgrowntomorethan150members from26countriesaroundtheworld.Amongitsmembersaretheworld’skeydecision-makersforthecreationanddistributionofmusicinthemediaandbrandssuchastheBBC,theMetropolitanOpera,Japan’sNHKandUniversalMusic,aswellasindividualmemberslikecomposers,choreographers,musiciansanddirectors.

Avant Première Screenings At midem

The IMZ started off the year 2013 with a very satisfactory 29th AvantPremièreeventatmidem,theMarchéinternationaldel’éditionmusicaleinCannes.AproductiveDirectorateaswellasBoardmeetingwasfol-lowed by the announcement of the new IMZ President Arild Erikstad(NRK).

Asinthepastcoupleofyears,theIMZcouldholditsmostimportantannualevents,theAvantPremièreScreenings,inaspot-oncinemahallwith a massive screen, sophisticated technical equipment and morethan300seats.AvantPremièreScreeningsgiveallFullandAffiliateIMZMemberstheopportunitytopresenttheirlatestTVorcinemaproduc-tionstoaprofessionalaudienceofdistributors,buyers,producersandpossiblepartnersbypresentingtrailersasasynopsisoftheirwork.

Overaperiodoffourdays,nofewerthan52companiespresentedtheirshowreels,includingarecordnumberofaltogether413ofthemostre-centculturalfilmproductionsofclassicalmusic,pop,worldmusicandjazzaswellascontemporarydanceandclassicalballet.

TheIMZstandwaspositionedatitstraditionalandprominentlocation,withadazzlingseaview.Asalways itwasa livelycentreofattractionforallIMZmembersandabusyvenueformanyproductivemeetings.ThankstoallthosewhocontributedtothissuccessfulAvantPremièreeditioninCannes!

ForthefirsttimeintheIMZhistory,dancescreen–celebratingits25thanniversary–tookplace intheUSA!1,200visitorsparticipated inthefestival offering fine examples of dance films as well as controversialpanelsandexcitingdiscussionswithrecognizedacademicexpertsandpractitioners.

Nearly300submissionswereenteredinfivecategories,allpublishedinthedancescreen2013catalogueandavailableforhundredsofvisitorsatadozenofreviewstationsatthefestivalandattheMuseumofPer-formanceandDesign(MP+D).50filmswerepubliclyscreenedattwocitycinemas.

TheinternationaljuryconsistedofEllenBromberg(Choreographer,film-makerandeducator),LynetteKessler(ArtisticandExecutiveDirectorofDanceCameraWest),MurielMaffre(formerballetdancer,DirectoroftheSanFranciscoMP+D),MichaelNunn&WilliamTrevitt(foundersoftheBalletboyz).

Film Festival At Wiener Rathausplatz29 June – 1 September 2013 | Vienna, Austria

The famous open-air Film Festival in front of Vienna’s City Hall wasagainputtogetherbytheIMZ.During65summeryeveningshighlightsfromthefieldsofclassicalmusic,jazz,worldmusicandpopstarredonscreen.Adultsaswellaschildrenfromallvariousbackgroundsandcul-turalinterestswereamazedbytheyearlytransformationofthesquareintoafreeopen-aircinemaandatrendygourmethotspotwithculinaryspecialtiesfromallaroundtheworld.

More than 700,000 music enthusiasts enjoyed amazing screeningsand live transmissions featuring Jonas Kaufmann, Plácido Domingo,RolandoVillazón,CeciliaBartoliandmanymore.Theprogrammeceleb-ratedclassicalhighlightslikeRichardWagner’s200thanniversarywiththe entire screening of The Ring, Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th anniversarywith seldom shown pieces and the grand Rudolf Nureyev’s 75th an-niversaryscreeninghismasterydancing.Twolivetransmissions–Mus-sorgsky’s Opera Boris Godunow, brought to the audience in ViennafromBayerischeStaatsoperMunich,andMozart’sDieEntführungausdemSerail,producedbyServusTV,comingfromthespeciallocationofHangar-7inSalzburg–thrilledtheaudience.Allloversofjazzandpopfoundtheirhighlightsaswell:Crowningthecombinationofopera,oper-etta,ballet,worldmusicandjazz,thisyear’sprogrammealsoincludedconcertfilmsfeaturingDieTotenHosen,HubertvonGoisern,PhilippPoisel, Paul McCartney, Norah Jones, Joe Bonamassa, Rod Stewart,CyndiLauper.MusicalfansfelttheirheartbeatsgoingupwithFlatPack–TheMusicalandkidsofallagesgotakickoutoftheanimation-filmversionofProkofiev’smusicaltaleofPeterandtheWolfortheblack-hu-mour-balletMaxandMoritz.

Film Festivals Around The World TheFilmFestivalatWienerRathausplatzwasfirstorganizedin1991andisthelargestfestivalofitskindworldwide.Sincethemid-90s,ViennaMusicFilmFestivalsfollowingthisexamplehavebeenorganizedworld-widebytheCityofViennainco-operationwiththeIMZandlocalpart-ners,andsuccessfullytravelledtoEasternandCentralEuropeandasfarasJapanattractinghundredsofthousandsofvisitors.

Inadditionto initiatingandcuratingViennaMusicFilmFestivals, theIMZoffers consultancyandprovidesmusicfilm festivals, exhibitions,fairsetc.around theworldwithhigh-classmusicanddancefilmpro-grammes.

In 2013, the IMZ curated the fi lm programme of the following cultural events:

14 June – 14 July 2013 | Zurich, Switzerland Thisyear,theZurichFestivalhighlightedRichardWagner’s200thanniversarybyspottinghisyearsinZurich.TheSwissNationalMuseumtookpartwithaspecialexhibitionincludingtwofilmsaboutthelifeandworksofthecomposercuratedbytheIMZ.

24 June – 7 July 2013 | Yekaterinburg, RussiaInitiatedbytheIMZinco-operationwiththeAustrianCulturalForumMoscowandorganizedbytheAustrianHonoraryConsulateinYekaterinburg,thisyear’seditionoftheViennaMusicFilmFestivalincludedaliveperformanceoftheWienerSängerknaben!

1 – 7 July 2013 | Sochi, RussiaForthefirsttime,theViennaMusicFilmFestivaltravelledtotheRivieraParkinSochi.

28 – 30 June 2013 | Breslau, PolandInco-operationwiththeViennaTouristBoard,theIMZbroughtJohannStraussandhismusicinaMusicFilmFestivaltoBreslau.

13 – 19 November 2013 | Osaka, JapanOntheoccasionofthe20thOsakaEuropeanFilmFestival,HankyuUmeda,thebiggestdepartmentstoreinOsaka,inviteditsvisitorstoenjoyaViennaMusicFilmFestivaldelightingover6,000people.

In2013,theIMZheldthe1steditionoftheIMZAcademy,ahighlyprac-tical,immersiveanddetailedmasterclassinthemulti-cameracaptureof classical music for television supported by Czech Television, ITFGolden Prague and Czekaj Artistic Productions. The primary focus oftheworkshopwaslaidonfacilitatingintensiveexchangewithrenownedexpertsinthefieldofdirectingandthevisualisationofmusicingeneral.Furthermore theAcademyconcentratedon theeditorial, scheduling,financialandculturalcontextinwhichprogrammingismade.

AsasequenceofworkshopstheIMZAcademyconsistedof twodaysofintensivere-editingsessionsonthreespecificprogrammesbroughtandpresentedbytheparticipantsaswellasaprogrammeprovidedbytheAcademydirectorhimself,followedbyanopenfeedbacksession.11participants–rangingfromstudentsandyoungprofessionalstowell-ex-periencedexperts–workedtogetherinteamsunderthedirectorshipofPeterManiuraandtheeditingeyesofAndyBarker,bothhavingyearsofexperiencewithinBBCTelevision.

The Academy offered customised advise on the production of artsprogrammingandprovidedspaceforthediscussionofimportantanddown-to-earthquestions forartsproductions.ThankstoCzechTelevi-siontheparticipantsenjoyedexcellentworkingfacilitieswithintheCTbuildingsavailable!

TheworkshopwasfollowedbyajointEBU-IMZpaneldiscussionwithinwhich the resultsof theworkshopswerepresented to thepublic andfurtherquestionsaboutthehighartofproducinginterestingartspro-grammes were addressed. Thanks to Arild Erikstad (NRK, Norway),RobertKamyk(TelewizjaPolska,Poland),HenkvanderMeulen(RoyalConservatoireofTheHague,TheNetherlands)andMartinTraxl(ORF,Austria)forparticipatinginthethought-provokingpanelhostedbyPeterManiura.

The50theditionoftheInternationalTelevisionFestivalGoldenPraguewasagainautumnallymeetingpointfortheinternationalculturalfilmin-dustry!Theuniqueinternationalfestival–organisedbyCzechTelevisioninco-operationwithEBUand IMZ–notonlyshows theworld’sbestmusicanddanceprogrammesandholdstheprestigiouscompetition,itisenrichedwithpremières,workshops,theIMZAcademy,concerts,avideolibrary,presentationsofTVstations,screeningsandmeetingswithrenowneddirectors,producersandchoreographers.

90high-qualityprogrammeswerecompetinginthisyear’sITFGoldenPrague competition. The jury, chaired by Hazel Wright (Hazel WrightMedia,UnitedKingdom)andcomposedbytherenownedexpertsArildErikstad(NRK,Norway),HenkvanderMeulen(RoyalConservatoireofThe Hague, The Netherlands), Reiner E. Moritz (Poorhouse Interna-tional,Germany)andDavidMareček(CzechPhilharmonics,CzechRe-public)awardedtheGrandPrixGoldenPraguetoJourneyOfALifetime:Sir Georg Solti (2012, Austria, Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images, incollaborationwithBR/ARTE).

TheIMZisproudtobeco-organiserofEVDHEuropeanVideoDanceHeritage,atwo-yearanalysisandexperimentalprogrammeonthepre-servationofdanceintheaudio-visualmedia,coordinatedbyLaMaisondelaDansedeLyon.

TheoverallgoaloftheEVDHprojectistostructureaEuropeanmemoryofdance throughvideoand to transmit thisheritage to youngergen-erations, considering itspolitical, economic, technical, legal andedu-cationaldimensions.Theprojectthusaimstoraiseawarenessamongprofessionals,rightsholdersandpolicymakersoftheneedtopreserveandtransmitvideodance.ItstrivestosharethedifferentEuropeanex-periencesand to transferknowledgeandbestpractices related to thepreservation and dissemination of video dance in order to establishnormsandtechnicalstandardsandtounifypractices.Finally,itwantstoensurebettervisibilityandcirculationofvideodanceinEuropeinordertosetupaEuropeanaudio-visualdancememory.
