MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Thank you

In the last century, as a result of conflict in Europe, many artists were displaced from the traditional centres of musical excellence, and new forms of music-making grew up in Russia and in America. When peace returned, Sàndor Végh understood the need to preserve and re-establish the special integrity of a particular type of European music-making and the importance of passing this down to new generations of musicians. It was this insight that in due course led to the foundation of IMS Prussia Cove and the establishment of its values.

Looking back over the years since its foundation in 1972, IMS Prussia Cove has reason to be proud of the place it has secured in the world of music and culture. Given the uncertainties created by recent political events, it is apposite to reflect on those fundamental values for which our organisation stands:

• Absolute integrity in service to the composer and to the music, to which the performance must always be faithful.

• The importance of learning and teaching musicianship, to the most refined and intense degree.

• Collaboration between musicians from Britain and all over the world which enhances the true potential of each individual in an international context.

• Encouragement to exceptionally talented young musicians at a critical point in their careers.

IMS Prussia Cove aims to hold fast to these ideals, and we are able to do so because we have the support of like-minded friends, who generously give time and all-important funding towards achieving these goals. We would like to thank our supporters most sincerely.

October 2016 Tessa Gaisman, Chairman of the Trustees

DONORS’ CIRCLES

The Sándor Végh Circle and Young Musicians’ Circle are groups of dedicated individual donors who offer a high level of support to IMS Prussia Cove. Members of our donors’ circles commit funding for three years, enabling us to plan ahead with confidence and develop ambitious new projects. Many of our circles members take advantage of the opportunity to experience our work first-hand, meeting the musicians whose development they have helped to support.

“ Since completing the course we feel inspired and ready to carve out our futures in music, striving – in Isserlis’ words – for the truest expression of our deepest musical convictions.” Affinity Collective Quartet

FRIENDS AND PATRONS

The Friends and Patrons of IMS Prussia Cove play a vital role in our work, both through financial support and by forming the core audience for our concerts in Cornwall. They loyally book tickets in advance, despite the last-minute programme announcements which enable these concerts to reflect the work which takes place during the seminars. The Friends Committee work hard to make the Cornwall concert series a success, helping to bring our work to the local community as well as raising income to support the seminars.

“We are so lucky to have IMS down here” is a comment often heard at the end of IMS concerts. Indeed we are. To have this procession of world class musicians twice a year in Cornwall is very special. Our grateful thanks go to the musicians who perform for no fee, to the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust which supports our free tickets for young people and to the Friends of IMS who give such valued support to the seminars. Judi Barrett, Chairman of the Friends

The Masterclass Seminar attracted large numbers of applicants this year, with some classes receiving as many as 89 applications for just 12 places. Students hoping to attend therefore faced fierce competition, maintaining a very high standard.During the seminar, students gained invaluable insight from their professors both during their own lessons and from watching other classes. Moreover, the unique environment offered by IMS Prussia Cove allowed these young musicians to spend time with their professors during mealtimes and in more informal settings, receiving advice and friendship which is vital to their musical and professional development.

MaestriGerhard Schulz and András Keller (violin), Thomas Riebl and Hariolf Schlichtig (viola), Frans Helmerson and Steven Isserlis (cello), Ferenc Rados & Rita Wagner and Thomas Adès (piano & chamber music). We were particularly pleased to welcome Hariolf Schlichtig, who last taught at the seminars nearly 20 years

ago, and Frans Helmerson, who last attended in 2010. Class assistants and pianists support the maestri by taking part in the classes, rehearsing with the students and performing in the concert series, this year: Gretel Dowdeswell, Dina Duisen, Emese Mali, Simon Parkin, Sophia Rahman and David Waterman.

Students The seminar was attended by 135 young musicians of 34 different nationalities, including participants from the UK, the USA, Australia, Russia, New Zealand, Canada, Finland, South Korea and across Europe. They included students at music colleges and conservatoires as well as young musicians just embarking on their professional careers. Alongside solo performers the seminar included several chamber groups including 4 string quartets, a piano trio, 2 clarinet trios and a number of duos. As well as receiving and observing lessons, students formed ad hoc chamber groups in the evenings, developing new collaborations and exploring our extensive

music library, often late into the night. 26 students were recommended by their professors for the Open Chamber Music seminar.

ConcertsDuring the seminar 6 concerts took place in venues throughout West Cornwall, providing an opportunity for 47 selected students to perform pieces they had been working on during their classes, as well as bringing performances of an extremely high standard to the local community. Highlights of the maestri concerts included a contemporary work by Thomas Adès – Lieux retrouvés for Cello and Piano - performed by the composer himself with our Artistic Director Steven Isserlis.

Visitors Supporters and trustees took advantage of the opportunity to listen to the classes and meet the musicians. These included Ruth and Ken Hardingham, from the Gordon Clark Memorial Trust, Peter and Sarah Freedman, who have been helping to build support in Devon, and our first visit from Anne Curtis, whose aunt Jenifer Ann Murray was a generous supporter. We were also joined by photographers Clive Barda and Charlie Best, as well as local artists who are donating to our art auction in May 2017.

ParticipantsThis year’s seminar was a great example of the international attraction of Open Chamber Music, with musicians from thirty different countries, including Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan, as well as participants from Britain, Germany, the USA and Canada. The balance of younger and more experienced players was particularly successful, with greater numbers of more senior musicians, including masterclass maestri. This enabled the younger players to benefit from direct contact with world-renowned performers. We were especially pleased to welcome Gerald Barry as Composer-in-residence, as well as Thomas Adès as Maestro-in-residence, both of whom contributed hugely to the musical development which is integral to the seminar.

OutreachA group of OCM musicians were invited to perform at a local school in Helston, reaching an audience of 30 young people with an interest in classical music. Their performance of the Gerald Finzi Oboe Quintet was accompanied by an accessible deconstruction of the work from Tim Boulton, and the school expressed delight with the success of the visit. 20 members of the Penzance Youth String Orchestra also came to listen to rehearsals. For many, this was the first time they had been able to engage with classical music in such close proximity, and feedback highlighted appreciation for this inspirational experience.

VisitorsWe were pleased to welcome the architect Sir Jeremy Dixon and his wife Julia. Sir Jeremy was impressed with the building, its connection to the sea and the impact of the surroundings on the creation of chamber music, saying ‘it is a totally romantic place […] it was very rewarding to hear work in progress and then the actual concerts’. We were also joined by Peter Greiner, a German luthier whose instruments are used by leading musicians across the world. Alongside our regular luthier Mark Jennings, Peter spent the week helping and advising the musicians with their instruments. At the request of Steven Isserlis, he also gave a fascinating lecture about instrument-making, describing the technicalities behind different qualities of sound.

Works and ConcertsDuring the seminar a large number of more unusual works were studied, including: Kodály String Quartet No.2, Kurtág String Quartet Microludes Op.13, Bloch Piano Quintet No.1, Schulhoff String Quartet No.2, Taneyev Piano Trio, Korngold String Sextet, Arensky’s Piano Trio No.1, two Fauré Piano Quintets, Goldmark String Quartet, Arthur Bliss Quintet for Oboe and Strings, Thomas Adès’ Arcadiana for String Quartet, Elgar’s String Quartet Op.83, the MacMillan Horn Quintet, and two works by Gerald Barry. We particularly enjoyed an in-house performance of Brahms’ Horn Trio, with Alec Frank-Gemmill playing natural horn, and Helena Winkelman’s String Quartet Papa Haydn’s Parrot, a witty work which was led by the composer on the violin. The annual concert series accompanying Open Chamber Music has become a highlight of West Cornwall’s musical life, and this year the standard of performance was extremely high, and much appreciated by local audiences.

Artworks and ArtistsDuring the seminar we invited a number of local artists to listen to rehearsals, all of whom are kindly donating works to our forthcoming art auction in May. These included Jeremy Annear, Clive Blackmore, Rose Hilton, Catherine Armitage, Richard Cook and Romi Tunstall-Behrens. The refectory was also transformed into a temporary art gallery – much to the delight of musicians, helpers and visitors – with more than 40 portraits of musicians at the seminars painted by Romi Tunstall-Behrens, some dating back to 1972.

“ My time at IMS Prussia Cove was inspiring, educational, and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I don’t think there is another place quite like this.” Michael Brown

OPEN CHAMBER MUSIC 11 September – 2 October 2016

Open Chamber Music is dedicated to and formed by the musical idealism which has sustained IMS Prussia Cove since its inception. Exceptional musicians come together from all over the world to learn from and share with their colleagues, studying wide-ranging repertoire in a supportive, unpressured environment which enables the continuing musical exploration and discovery so essential to a performer’s career.

This year’s group reflected Sándor Végh’s dedication to the idea of enhancing musical development through ensemble playing, combining more experienced musicians with younger players who had recently attended the Masterclass Seminar. The musicians were: Winfried Rademacher and Sini Simonen, violin, Jenny Lewisohn, viola, Julian Arp and István Várdai, cello, Matthew Hunt, clarinet, and Elisabeth Leonskaja, piano. The programme, especially devised by Artistic Director Steven Isserlis, included Hummel’s variations on God Save the King, arranged by Steven for violin and cello, Glinka’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, the sublime Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Brahms’ Piano Quartet No.3, Op.60.

The tour started in Truro, before performances in Wells Cathedral School’s brand new concert hall, Cedars Hall, Champs Hill in Sussex, West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge and finally the Wigmore Hall in London. The finale concert was accompanied by our annual reception, a chance to thank all our much-valued supporters.

“ I was obviously not the only one who felt that the course was a life-changing experience.” János Palojtay

Mercers’ Hall Concert30 November 2015For the second time, we were invited to perform for the Master’s Annual Dinner at Mercers’ Hall in the City of London. Musicians Magnus Johnston, Tom Hankey, Rosalind Ventris, Guy Johnston and Tom Poster were excellent ambassadors for the organisation, for which we are very grateful.

South West Tour1–5 December 2015This year we launched a new project, taking a group of musicians from Open Chamber Music on tour in Cornwall and Devon. In collaboration with Carn to Cove, and with the support of IMS Friends, the tour brought our work to smaller and more isolated venues, reaching new audiences. In Totnes, an education workshop took place in the local school KEVICC, and 55 young people also attended the concert. Feedback from audiences was enthusiastic, and we are planning a further South West Tour in 2017.

Steven Isserlis: An evening of Bach17 December 2015Artistic Director Steven Isserlis generously gave a concert in support of IMS Prusisa Cove. We are grateful to Michael Wade for hosting the concert, and the dinner which followed, at his beautiful house near Salisbury. The performance combined Bach’s Solo Cello Suites with works by the Hungarian composer György Kurtág.

BBC Radio 3 Broadcast30 and 31 December 2015The Bristol performance of our 2015 Autumn Tour was broadcast on Radio 3 as part of their lunchtime concert series. This concert featured musicians from Open Chamber Music playing works by Mozart, Brahms, Schubert and Dvorák.

Sándor Végh Memorial Concert8 and 10 January 2016The Sándor Végh Memorial concerts, which mark the death of our founder in 1997, have become an established part of our year. In memory of their teacher, musicians Tim Boulton, Werner Dickel, Lesley Hatfield, Xenia Jankovic, Kjell-Arne Jørgensen, Ulrike-Anima Mathé and Kari Ravnan performed in Cornwall and London, the London concert kindly hosted by Bob and Elisabeth Boas.

Sir András Schiff Lecture4 April 2016We were honoured to once again invite guests to an exclusive lecture-recital by Sir András Schiff, hosted by Bob and Elisabeth Boas, in which he discussed Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.21, D.960 in B-flat major. As always, he offered a fascinating insight into Schubert’s work, and we were very grateful for this opportunity to raise funds.

Events in 20172017 will be an exciting year for IMS Prussia Cove. In January, we are hosting a concert to celebrate the 90th birthday of our co-founder Hilary Tunstall-Behrens. The concert will be given by professors from the seminars, bringing together some of the world’s greatest musicians. This special evening will celebrate our work, and will mark the debt owed by generations of musicians to the integrity, guidance and energy given by Hilary to the seminars over many years. In May we will be holding an auction of 20 artworks in London. Generously donated by Cornish artists to raise funds for the seminars, the evening will provide the unique opportunity to bid for original artworks, including a piece by Barbara Hepworth.
