The most important thing we can do to improve student outcomes is to develop and improve the skills of our teachers. The Victorian Government and at Kyabram P-12 College we will continue to provide opportunities to develop professional, passionate staff and equip them with the right knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their students. To ensure we support the learning and development of not only our students, but our staff too; we are committed to providing professional development opportunities for our workforce. Staff will spend four days per year further developing their skills in areas that are aligned to the school priorities. Students will directly benefit from these improvements in their daily learning. Throughout 2018 staff will be taking time to improve their delivery of teaching and learning through the four professional practice days they have been allocated. The professional practice days are part of the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2017. Each full time teacher is entitled to one day per term (four days per year), to focus on the improved delivery of high quality teaching and learning. At Kyabram P-12 College we have included our support staff so they also gain the benefits of such an initiative. We know children sometimes find it challenging when their teacher is away from the classroom. Equally, its important that staff take the time to focus on improving their professional practice because their learning directly impacts on your childs learning experience. Principal’s Report “Excellence Through Opportunity”

Dear Parents and Friends,

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DAYS In Victoria and at Kyabram P-12 College, we achieve excellence by consistently focusing on improving the achievements of learners, whether it is through improving the quality of educational services or changing the way we teach. The most important thing we can do to improve student outcomes is to develop and improve the skills of our teachers. PARENTS CLUB – YOU ARE INVITED Parents’ Club plays an important role at Kyabram P-12 College. Parents’ Club not only benefits students, but also enriches and contributes to the wellbeing of the whole school community through positive interactions and support.

Parents participating in Parents Club activities can gain a firsthand understanding of the general operations of our College, can use, and build on, existing skills and expertise, develop friendships and work together with other parents interested in supporting the school.

Parents’ Club members work together with College Council and the Principal to provide input into school decision-making and organise activities for our students.

In 2017 our Kyabram P-12 College Parents’ Club main goal was to install new curtains in the W.A. Kuhne Assembly Hall. During January this project was completed and I would like to congratulate our hard working and dedicated Parents Club on this achievement. Thank you!

If you are interested in being part of this wonderful team in our College and would like to participate in organising activities, provide the College with your ideas and be part of a social cuppa and a chat, please come along to our first Parents’ Club meeting for 2018, being held at the College Office board room, this coming Monday March 5

th at

7:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

SECONDARY STUDENT / PARENT / TEACHER DISCUSSIONS The term 1 Secondary Student / Parent / Teacher Discussions will be held on Wednesday 21

st March from 2:00pm

to 7:00pm for all Secondary students.

This will mean if you are able to collect your children from school at 1:30pm that would be appreciated to support the school in running these important discussions. A note will be sent home shortly gaining permission for students to leave the school at 1:30pm.

Bus travellers and students that are required to stay at school will be looked after by the available staff for the afternoon. I would encourage parents to register your interview times as soon as possible on Compass which will be available from Friday 9

th March. Our interviews provide us with an opportunity to discuss your student’s progress and for us to

support you as an important person in your student’s development and learning. I also look forward to using our interview evenings as an opportunity to catch up with our parents during this time.

This has now boosted the fundraising efforts of the Kyabram P-12 College Parents Club who have completed the curtain installation and are now focusing on the hall toilet upgrade. Prep News What a wonderful start to the year the Preps have had. We have been very busy with lots happening in the classrooms. Jolly Phonics - it is wonderful to see the progress made by all students. We are sure you have been hearing some of the songs at home. So far we have introduced s, a, t, i and this week p. Students are welcome to draw, write or cut and paste pictures in their Jolly Phonics homework books. Home Reading - well done to our super readers who have read for 25 nights. It has been fantastic to start signing certificates in the home reading logs! At the moment we expect to see the children pointing to the words as they read, identifying the Jolly Phonics sounds in the books and remembering some of the 12 Golden Words. The books that students are currently taking home are very repetitive so that students can increase their known word bank and also practice fluent reading. This is also a time for you to model reading with your child being able to repeat after you as they point to the words. Thank you to parents that are listening to their own child as well as others during morning reading, it is appreciated. Social Stories - each Prep grade has been discussing how to deal with situations that they don't like. You may notice the posters up in the classrooms; When someone is hurting or annoying me I will: 1. Look at them. 2. Put my hand up in a stop sign. 3. Say to the person, 'Stop it, I don't like it.' 4. If it doesn't work I will get help from a teacher or adult. Wednesday rest days come to an end - just a reminder that from next Wednesday 7th March, Prep students will be at school full time. Please speak with your child's teacher if you have any concerns about this.

Year 3/4 News Water Safety Session

This event occurred for all but Mr Nexhip’s class last Thursday, 22nd

February. Students participated in activities to develop their ability to be safe in and around water. Thank you for having your child prepared for the day. It was a bit overcast, but everyone had a great day in the kayaks and learning what it was like to swim with a life jacket on. Mr Nexhip’s grade will attend on Thursday, 8

th March.

Reading at Home Expectations

Students are expected to read at home at least FOUR times per week with evidence in their diaries.

In their diaries, on the day, write the title of the book they are reading along with the page. They should write their initials in the ‘Home’ section, on the right day of the week, on the diary insert for that week.

Students are also expected to read in their classrooms before school starts, every day. It would be fantastic if you could come in, as a parent, to support this reading time not only with just your child, but with other children as well.

Thursday, March 1st – EXCURSION - Port of Echuca. Thank you for ensuring that your child had written or online permission to attend this important activity in our term 1 calendar. Please find out from your child how the day went and how their learning on the day connected to what ‘community’ meant in the past.

Getting to know you interviews. If you attended these interviews, your relationship and communication with your child’s teacher is off to a fantastic start! If you were unable to attend, please set up another time to do this as soon as possible with your child ’s teacher.

Book Club Co-ordinator Position Available for 2019 - Register your interest now

Cheryl Child and Anna Hooper Bookclub is issued out to families in the primary campus 6-8 times every year, where families have the opportunity to purchase books from the catalogues; all purchases create awards points that we use to purchase books for the school library and class rooms. Each year this total has been around $1000 or more of books purchased and the role of the co-ordinator is to help in choosing these. Next year the co-ordinator position is vacant with Anna finishing in the primary area and she would love someone to stop in and take over this rewarding role that is very popular with all the children. It isn ’t hard, only twice each term and requires you to collect orders once in, place orders on the online system (already set up), collect books when delivered to school and sort and distribute to classes. Books come already bagged up in class room e.g. Prep A, so you only need to separate and cross check orders. You will be greeted by lots of smiling faces, believe me, when you hand out the books! The new incoming co-ordinator could work with Anna from term 3 to see how the system works and take over before the end of the year if they feel confident to do so. We definitely need someone to fill this position to continue, even if you can only do for the one year. Please leave your name and contact number at the primary office if you can take on this position, or contact Anna on 0418 134 721. Our first Book Club forms will be out in classes very soon. Thank you.
