AFL Girls Success

I had the great pleasure of seeing our AFL girls in action recently as part of the School Sport Victoria competition. What made the day most pleasing was the positive way in which they represented Hallam Senior and also the way they showed genuine encouragement and appreciation for their opposition.

The girls have now won the Grand Final of this competition by one goal. It has been an absolutely outstanding year for this team. Well done to all the girls and coach, Brett Alexander.

Pasifika Students from Hallam Senior College Multi-Cultural Group performed fantastically at this event that celebrates performance and cultural pride. Unfortunately, I could not attend the event this year but I was lucky enough to attend one of the final practice sessions. The quality of the performance along with the enthusiasm and energy of the students was a joy to watch. Thanks to all students for their commitment to this along with Mr Star Ah Kuoi

Hallam Community Art Exhibition

Congratulations to Matthew Chmait year 11, on winning the Wallara ' Picture this' Art competition. His colourful artwork, completed in Visual Communication and Design, will become a moving billboard on the side of a bus. The subject matter is social inclusion for people with different abilities. Matthew will also receives a cheque from Wallara and a certificate. We had over 60 entries for this competition and it invited our students to think about disability in our society. The judging panel was very impressed with the standard of the work as well as the diverse ideas depicted. The posters are on display in the College Gallery and you are welcome to come and see the entries.

The Community Art Exhibition is on display in the College Gallery until the 29th August. Art and craft works from staff, parents, ex students, younger students and Hallam Primary School. Thank you to everyone who contributed it looks fabulous. Come and vote for your favourite work and follow the Art Trail for prizes to be won.

Please find Matthew’s description below.

My design portrays people from different cultures around the world reaching out to each other regardless of their heritage and ability. ' Not Me ... But Us', as quoted indicates that you are not alone in this world, no matter what situation. we are all in it together. we should give as much support as possible to those who need it, in order for them to live a happy and meaningful life.

R U OK Day?

Thursday 13th September 2018 | R U OK? Day is a national day of action, dedicated to inspiring all people of all backgrounds to regularly ask each other 'Are you OK?' It's a national day of action which aims to prevent suicide by encouraging Australians to connect with someone they care about and help stop little problems turning into big ones. On that day we want everyone across the country, from all backgrounds and walks of life, to ask family, friends and colleagues: "Are you OK?". Staying connected with others is crucial to our general health and wellbeing. Feeling isolated or hopeless can contribute to depression and other mental illnesses, which can ultimately result in suicide. Regular, meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love. It's so simple. In the time it takes to have a coffee, you can start a conversation that could change a life.

HELP IN A CRISIS

The truth is, some conversations just become too big for family and friends. If you're worried about someone and feel urgent professional support is needed, contact your local doctor or the agencies below. Like you, R U OK? is not equipped to offer crisis intervention or expert counselling, there is no substitute for the professional care available from the following organisations: 13 11 14 — Call 24/7 for crisis support

1300 659 467 — People at risk of suicide, carers and bereaved

1800 55 1800 — Counselling for young people, 5-25 years

1300 845 745 — Counselling service for people suffering grief

Please keep an eye out for events running throughout the school during the schools mental health week 11th – 14th September.
