Northern Deanery Meeting

There will be a Northern Deanery Meeting at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Lodi, on Saturday, July 27, from 10am – 12 pm. As many of you know, elected delegates from each parish are required to attend, and mem-bers of the vestry are strongly encouraged to do so. The gathering is al-ways open to all parishioners. In fact, it is a wonderful opportunity to meet with sisters and brothers from our Northern Deanery parishes, which are St. John’s, Lodi; St. John’s, Stockton; St. Anne’s, Stockton; St. James, Sonora, St. Francis, Turlock; St. Matthew’s, San Andreas; and St. Paul’s, Modesto. Our bishop and canon are in attendance. The agenda includes updates by the bishop and canon, announcements regarding calendar events, updates on vacant clergy positions, and a sharing of what’s hap-pening in each of our congregations. For those who wish to attend but prefer not to drive, ask around; there are usually quite few folks from St. Paul’s who attend.

Congratulations Lucinda!

[Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real] The Rev. Lucinda Ashby, canon to the ordinary in the Dio-cese of Idaho, was elected June 1 to be the fourth bishop of the Salinas, California-based Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real.

The election at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga was framed within the liturgy of the Eu-charist and attended by 350 people. She received the required number of votes in the third ballot of voting. We rejoice in the calling of this new bishop, and we welcome our neighbor to California, from which she origi-nated. She was originally ordained in the Diocese of Northern California.

Celebrant: El Señor sea con ustedes. (The Lord be with you.)

All: Y con tu espíritu. (And with your spirit)

Celebrant: Let us Pray.

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All: Amen

The Liturgy of the Word

(2 Kings 5:1-14)

A Reading from the Second Book of Kings:

Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his master, because by him the Lord had given vic-tory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. She said to her mistress, "If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy." So Naaman went in and told his lord just what the girl from the land of Israel had said. And the king of Aram said, "Go then, and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel."

He went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of garments. He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, "When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy." When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, "Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me."

But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, "Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel." So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha's house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean." But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, "I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?" He

Adult Education at St. Paul’s

Mark your calendars now if you are interested in attend-ing a four-part series on the letter of St. Paul to the Ro-mans. Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 17, and continue on September 24, October 1, and October 15th. We will skip Tuesday, October 8 because that is Family Promise week, and also Yom Kippur begins at sundown that evening. Classes will run from 6pm through 7:30 pm

Diocesan Center for Learning

Interested in learning more about the Gospels, Christian Theology, the Book of Common Prayer for Leaders? These three courses are taken by our four aspirants to the diaconate as part of the diocesan School for Dea-cons, and are also usually attended by parishioners from around the San Joaquin Diocese who wish to grow, discuss and learn. Because the courses are not taken for credit, there is a $25 auditing fee to help cover materials. Classes meet for three hours each on a given Saturday each month from September through January. The location is the conference room in the of-fice building on the grounds of St. James Cathedral. More information, dates, and registration are available on the diocesan web site. On the home page you will notice a blue rectangle in the upper right-hand corner indicat-ing the school. Click on it and you will be able to browse through the entire booklet describing the school.

Teachers for the fall semester are:

Gospels (New Testament I) - The Rev. Dr. Canon Anna Carmichael

Christian Theology - The Rev. Nick Lorenzetti

The Book of Common Prayer (contact Fr. Nick if you wish to attend; registration online is tricky.) The Rev. Carolyn Woodall

turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, "Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something diffi-cult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, `Wash, and be clean'?" So he went down and immersed him-self seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean.

The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

The Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 30

Exaltabo te, Domine

1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have lifted me up and have not let my enemies triumph over me.

2 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health.

3 You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave.

4 Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; give thanks for the

remembrance of his holiness.

5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favor for a life-time.

6 Weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning.

7 While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. You, Lord, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains."

8 Then you hid your face, and I was filled with fear.

9 I cried to you, O Lord; I pleaded with the Lord, saying,

10 "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness?

11 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; O Lord, be my helper."

12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy.

13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever.

The Second Reading

(Galatians 6:(1-6)7-16)

A Reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have re-ceived the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor's work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads.

Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher.

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised-- only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I

Recycling at St. Paul’s

Our recycling area has now been set up in the foyer of the parish hall. We ask parishioners to bring recyclable plastic (remember not all plastic is recyclable) and aluminum cans to this area and to deposit them in the appropriate containers. In part, this is an effort to further engage our parish community in the call of the national church to care for our crea-tion.

The recyclables will be taken to nearby centers, and the money realized from that will be deposited in our operating account to help support our Latino Ministries, primarily our partnership with El Vista School and the El Vista neighborhood.

Thanks to all of you who are helping with this endeavor.

never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Gradual Hymn: Levas #161 “Go preach my gospel”

The Holy Gospel

(Luke 10:1-11, 16-20)

A reading of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

ALL: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the la-borer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. When-ever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not wel-come you, go out into its streets and say, `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the

kingdom of God has come near.'

"Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the de-mons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily: The Rev. Deacon Greg Masztal

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His King-dom will have no end.

Spiritual Communion Prayer

Deacon: Let us pray.

All: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sac-rament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Closing Prayers

All: Grant we ask you, O Lord, Almighty God, that the words we have heard this day and the sacrament we have received, may through your grace, be so grafted inwardly within our hearts, that they may ever bring forth in us the fruits of the Holy Spirit for good living, to the honor and praise of your Holy Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, un-ion; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we re-ceive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Recessional Hymn: #719 “America the Beautiful”

Dismissal: Go now in peace to love and serve the Lord and one another, Alleluia. All: Thanks be to God, Alleluia

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is wor-shipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy, Catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Today’s response: “Christ our light shine on us.”

Confession of Sin

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Deacon: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life.

All: Amen

The Peace

Deacon: La paz del Señor sea siempre con ustedes.

All: Y con tu espíritu.

Special Prayers

Birthday Prayer: Watch over your child (children), O Lord, as his/her/their days increase; bless and guide him/her/them wherever they may be. Strengthen him/her/them when he/she/they stands; comfort him/her/them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise him/her/them up if he/she/they falls; and in his/her/their heart may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of his/her/their life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Wedding Anniversary Prayer: O God, you have so consecrated the covenant of marriage that in it is represented the spiritual unity between Christ and His Church. Send, therefore, your blessing upon these your servants, that they may so love, honor, and cherish each other in faithful-ness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that their home may be a haven of blessing and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.

Prayer for the Anniversary of a Baptism: O God, you prepared your disciples for the coming of the Holy Spirit through the teaching of your Son, Jesus Christ, who was first baptized by John in the Jordan River. Bless this child (these children) of yours on the anniversary of Baptism, that the gifts of the Holy Spirit may ever remain with him/her/them, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
