Author Rank is a quality score or online reputation measured by the quality of content that an author has published. Information about the author is pulled from your Google+ profile and displayed next to your article in the SERP's.

Even though today there is no direct impact on the websites performance in the Search engines, authorship of an article can be leveraged to affect the click through rate which can improve the overall traffic to the site.
Step 1 – Create a Google + account
Don't forget to add a profile

Step 2: Add Contributor links to your Google+ profile.
1. In your Google + Profile click edit profile
2. In your Google+ Profile at the bottom of the page you will see "Contributor to"
Step 2: Add Contributor links to your Google+ profile.
3. Click on "Contributor to" and the box will open up
4. Add the title of the website or blog site
5. Add the link to the page. Be sure it is formatted with the http://www.
Step 3: Insert link into Header of the Website1. Take of note of your Google+ ID which appear in your browser.
2. In your websites backend insert the following link into the <head> section of the article page.
*The highlighted in red section is where you insert your Google+ profile ID

Step 4: Confirm It’s Working
The next step is to confirm it’s working. In order to do that use the rich snippet testing tool. After you type in your URL Google will tell you if the authorship mark-up code is working or not.
It should look like this:
Make sure the profile shows the “Verified”
status
Step 4: Wait
The next step is to wait. It can take 2-3 weeks or sometimes even longer for your profile picture to show up in the search results. Please note that the picture may not always appear next to the search results in all searches.
