MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
CONTACT ME
If I had to put my teaching in a nutshell I would say I love breaking down difficult technical problems for my students, so they can ultimately express themselves with more musical freedom on the flute. Being an orchestral musician I am always seeking the balance of great technique and convincing musicality. I also believe it is vital to look at flute playing in a wholistic manner incorporating mental preparation and looking after our bodies.
No matter what level or musical interest a student has, I encourage them to develop their own musical philosophy that reflects their personality. Music has the capacity to challenge us, to help us see the world from different perspectives and to connect us with others. I believe that making music matters because it gets to the soul of who we are as humans.

KATHRYN MOORHEAD
Originally from Australia, I now live in New Zealand where I am the Associate Principal Flautist in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. I have worked with many orchestras over the past 20 years and can offer students coaching for auditions from the perspective of an ensemble player, an audition panel member and from being a seasoned auditioner myself.
I have sat on juries for the NFA Orchestral Audition Competition in the USA, the Australian Young Artist Competition, the Leslie Barklamb Scholarship and have also examined University recitals, so I can share my experience on what jury members are listening for.
My students have gone on to study music at Conservatories across Australia, New Zealand and the USA. I have prepared many flute players for their Trinity College, Royal Schools of London and AMEB exams.
I also teach students who want to play the flute as a hobby, to expand their repertoire and explore their own musical path.
