For 50 years Big Brothers Big Sisters has been an integral part of our region. Daily we are reminded of the impact of our programs. Whether it is a thank you letter, a call or an email, it always leaves us wondering - if not us, then who? We have matched thousands of children with volunteer mentors. These matches not only impact the lives of the child and volunteer but in many case the extended family as well. Who would step up and provide ‘our kids’ with this amazing gift if not Big Brothers Big Sisters?

Mentoring has a greater impact than we realize. Findings in a recent study by the Boston Consulting Group concluded that for every $1 invested in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs $18 returns to society. Children who are supported by mentors are happier, show higher literacy skills and are more likely to volunteer. Simply put, these children do better!

Supporting positive life outcomes like those identified in the study is what drives us to look to the next 50 years. Just as our current programs have evolved beyond the traditional One-on-One matches of the 1960’s we must ensure that this continues. They must remain relevant to the changing demographics and needs of our families, volunteers and community. Today, our in-school programs account for the majority of our service growth. Twenty years ago no one predicted this shift – I know that from experience. Going forward we must be open to new partnerships and ways by which we provide mentoring support.

Mentoring has a lasting impact on children’s lives. Studies clearly show Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs contribute to the healthy development of a child.

So the question remains - i f n o t u s , t h e n w h o ?

634 volunteer mentors provided over 38,000 hours of support to 1,250 children and youth in Waterloo Region.

I encourage local businesses to sponsor and support the Chef`s Gourmet Dinner. It’s our opportunity to give back to the community. It’s about helping young people – that’s what it’s all about! - Ann, owner of the TFS Group

Proud sponsor of Best Friends Chef`s Gourmet Dinner

The TFS Group In a recent conversation with Ann Bennett, owner of the TFS Group we discussed the impact the company’s recent sponsorship of the Best Friends Chef’s Gourmet Dinner has had on children served by the agency. This event is held annually by Best Friends, who exist solely to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region, to support their mentoring programs.

As a supporter of Best Friends initiatives, Ann saw this as an opportunity for her company’s philanthropic initiatives to help children locally. It also provided an opportunity for Big Brothers Big Sisters to share program information and the impact of mentoring with her employees and clients.

TFS Group, a local company providing transportation accounting and compliance services, was founded 40 years ago by Ann’s late husband Richard. Although the TFS Group supports the needs of over 6,500 owner operators across Canada, they welcomed the opportunity to give back to their local community by supporting causes important to both employer and employee. Ann remembers attending the Chef’s Gourmet Dinner many years ago when tuxedos and long gowns were the common evening attire.

She remembers being impressed by the caliber of the event and having an opportunity to dress up! but what she really valued was knowing that the proceeds supported children’s mentoring programs.

“I can now reflect back and see the real impact of our participation at the Chef’s Gourmet Dinner. I know that not every family has a strong support system for their children.

Our hearts always go out to children and we want to encourage them, make

sure they all have a chance to thrive - like my 3 children and grandchildren. I want all children to grow up to be healthy in body, mind and spirit. I want to encourage

them to achieve their potential. I now see clearly that Big

Brothers and Big Sisters is the agency best positioned to offer

mentoring services to young people in need of this kind of support.”

The Chef’s Gourmet Dinner provides an opportunity to thank our clients and employees by taking 9 people to dinner. This gives us another opportunity to introduce new people to the valuable work done by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Perhaps you too would consider being a sponsor for this event like TFS has for 2015.
