Ability Connection Colorado

This year once again set a powerful change in motion for this organization. This year was a journey towards a new definition, a new public understanding…a new name. And while “new” isn’t necessarily the first word to describe an organization that got its start in 1946, “new” is the word that describes how we continue to redefine ourselves and the trail that we blaze for those we serve.

With intentional consideration for the people involved in our programs and the proud history that precedes us, the decision to change our name expands our capacity to execute the mission, to realize our vision and to create clear strategies for the future. By continuing to offer inclusive, innovative educational opportunities, pathways to employment and support that allows people to thrive, the name Ability Connection Colorado draws broad attention to the heart of what defines this organization. A singular focus on ABILITY. Every one of us as human beings is defined by what we can do, by ability.

The name change highlights the diversity of the people with disabilities and challenges served by ACCO and the fact that we are a conduit between individuals and their community. We are a CONNECTION to the greater community for so many people and families. Our new name allows this diversity to grow and thrive.

As individuals, we find our place within our chosen communities. And we all feel blessed to call ourselves part of this community, part of COLORADO. Colorado is a place of many opportunities and diverse communities.

Ability Connection Colorado: an organization dedicated to providing people with disabilities and other challenges the spaces, opportunities and materials from which they discover, nurture and grow their unique abilities and talents. Built on the fundamental roots of respect and acceptance, offering avenues for finding one’s place in a chosen community, providing guidance to hone existing skills and discover new ones, creating expectations for broadening personal capacity, and fostering confidence that propels each individual to grow into their human potential.

Name: The accomplishments of 2012-2013 tapped the roots of 68 years of service to the people of this state and laid the foundation for transition to our new name - Ability Connection Colorado. Sown by nine Founding Mothers, these seeds have blossomed into the three branches of our Mission: Inclusive educational opportunities, pathways to the personal satisfaction of employment and building the strength of families.

Developmental Services 320 children were screened & monitored 51 referred for services 80% of children with delays or potential delays and at-risk for special education were ready for mainstream classrooms at the end of the year Special Education Services 62 children had IEPs or IFSPs during the program year 13 children received early intervention services 12 children tested out at age level and no longer needed special services Family Involvement 4,982 referrals were provided to families 142 fathers/father figures attended male involvement activities 250 families participated in family literacy activities/events

EMPLOYMENT

Employ Colorado Social Security WIPA Program • 381 New Cases were opened • 200 Employment Plans were developed • 530 Work Incentives were utilized • 136 Individuals obtained new employment • 120 Individuals purposefully reduced benefits based on earned income Ticket to Work/Fee for Service Job Development/Job Placement Program • 78 Referrals became active program participants • 42 Obtained employment (including Summer Youth Program) • 33 Involved in active job search • 38 Retained employment for 90 days or longer

More than 2,000 Individuals who contacted the program for help received personal responses, attended presentations/meetings and were provided additional follow-up and other support services.

Ready to Achieve Mentoring Program RAMP • 60 Youth participated in RAMP • 100% completed Individualized Mentoring Plans • 80% completed the program and successfully transitioned to their life’s next step • Several alumni of SOAR Academy who are now 18 continued coming to RAMP meetings to serve as RAMP junior mentors. • These youth often offered advice or help to younger RAMP youth on weekly activities such as resume creation, job application completion and mock interviews.

Employment Works’ mission is to connect youth and adults who have disabilities and other challenges to authentic employment opportunities as well as develop the skills and assist in providing the resources necessary to thrive in the workplace.

Statewide Family Support’s mission is to continue the legacy of parent driven organizations established to connect people with their communities and one another, create change, and access resources needed to assure wellbeing.

CITIZENS FOR PATIENT SAFETY

• Founder Patty Skolnik appeared on national TV program The Doctors •The third and final expansion of the Michael Skolnik Transparency Act was made into law extending profile requirements to all 49 licensed health professionals. • Initiated a Train the Trainer patient safety advocate program across the state

EMPOWER COLORADO

• EMPOWER leaders were involved in 242 IEP meetings on behalf of families. • Lobbied Congress in Washington, DC regarding child psychiatrics. • Started our first Sibshopgroup for siblings of children with mental health issues

• 50 volunteers contributed 50,178 Volunteer Hours • These volunteers built Circles of Friends around 2,135 individuals to assist them in their activities of daily living (ADL) in Boulder and Longmont.

INFANTILE SCOLIOSIS OUTREACH PROGRAM

• 38 volunteer guardians served 49 wards • 56 families attended Petition Assistance and Guardianship 101 Classes • Lead Coordinator Sarah Solano organized and presented 56 Guardianship Classes

• Advocated for Mehta Growth Guidance Casting treatment for 950 children • Helped a mother organize successful 5K Run in NC to raise funds and awareness • 520 professionals were directly informed or advised about the Mehta Treatment

• Reached and supported 11,171 people this year • 6,269 Individuals were provided Information & Referral services in English and Spanish. • 96 Parent Matches


19th Annual Great Balls of Fire Billiards Challenge • Raised over $70,000 benefiting the children’s programs of ACCO through the Kyle E. Fisher Memorial Fund • 250 people participated in the 9-ball tournament • Founded by Brian and Kelli Fisher and Family and Hosted by the Colorado Firefighters, Denver Firefighters local 858 and the Wynkoop Brewing Company

12th Annual Ability Connection Colorado Mother’s Tea • Raised over $45,000 to benefit ACCO’s six Statewide Family Suppot Programs • 330 People attended the Mama Mia / Italian-themed event • Fashion show by the Gap featured children with disabitiies as runway models • 28 businesses and 135 people sponsored a Mom(s) to attend the luncheon

30th Annual Colorado Concours Exotic Sports Car Show & Concours d’ Elegance • Car show celebrated its 30th Year and raised more than $102,000 for the children’s programs of ACCO • Over 14,000 people in attendance • Hosted by 20 elite Colorado Car Clubs • Nearly 500 exotic and rare cars on display • Featured Marque for the event was Porsche

7th Annual Straight Shot Sporting Clay Event • Raised over $95,000 for ACCO Programs • 301 people participated in the shoot • Sponsored by 54 different companies, many in the oil and gas industry

29th Annual Wine in the Pines • Raised nearly $139,000 for the Kelly Smith Employment Center • 600 people attended the Red Carpet / Hollywood themed event • Hosted by founders Mike and Magaret Smith & Family In total, ACCO Special Events were attended

by more than 15,500 people and raised over $451,000!
