SPOTLIGHT ON: AWARD WINNERS
Several faculty members in the Department of Internal Medicine are recipients of various awards. In addition, the Department has announced its various student award winners as described below. Distinguished Teacher Award, M.D. Degree Program -- 2008 The School of Medicine recently initiated a distinguished teacher award program to recognize outstanding teaching of medical students. Winners of these awards are determined by the students themselves and the program is administered by the Office of Curricular Affairs. This year two faculty members in the Department were included in the 2008 award recipients. Last year, in the program’s first cycle, two Internal Medicine faculty members were also among the award recipients. The recipients were honored with receipt of a medal, a cash award and by having their names displayed on a plaque outside the LRC Auditorium.
Paul G. Schmitz, M.D., Nephrology, is the recipient of this award for Presentation Skills which honors achievement in the presentation of didactic materials.
H. Douglas Walden, M.D., is the recipient of this award for Clinical Teaching which honors excellence in facilitating student learning in a clinical setting; ambu- latory and inpatient.
Thomas J. Olsen, M.D., General Internal Medicine, was the 2007 recipient of this award for Humanism which honors achievement in demonstrating the qualities essential for humanism: compassion, altruism, empathy, service, good communication skills, and respect for students, staff, patients, family and colleagues. Rafi Kevorkian, M.D., Geriatric Medicine, was the 2007 recipient of this award for Clinical Teaching. The third year medical students each year nominate outstanding teachers from among the residents and faculty they work with during the internal medicine clerkship. Recognized for their outstanding leadership, teaching, and role model during the 2006-2007 academic year were resident Sourin Banerji, M.D., and faculty member Rajagopal Chadaga, M.D. Two Internal Medicine faculty were also recipients of award made by the Office of Research and Innovation of Saint Louis University for their commitment to the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service; their initiative in forming collaborative projects; and their success in obtaining external support for these activities. Recipients were John E. Morley, M.B.,B.Ch., and Nina Tumosa, Ph.D. These awards were announced at the 2008 Grant Winner Reception. Each year the Department of Internal Medicine makes several awards to outstanding medical students in the graduating class, as follows: ACP Coy D. Fitch Book Award – Estebes Hernandez was recognized for outstanding achievement in internal medicine and commitment to a career in general internal medicine.

ACP Clerkship Award – Estebes Hernandez received the award which is given to one medical student from each Missouri medical school for outstanding performance in the year 3 internal medicine clerkship. The award consists of a $400 stipend to enable the student to attend the fall meeting of the Missouri ACP Chapter at the Lake of the Ozarks. Goronwy O. Broun, M.D., Student Award – James Grigg and Bithika Thompson received $250 each for outstanding achievement in clinical internal medicine. Ph.D. Completed: Jason Low, MS, graduate student in the Division of Rheumatology, completed his Ph.D. defense and thesis work on "Biomarkers in Juvenile Arthritis" on May 5, 2008. He will receive his Ph.D. at the graduation ceremony. Raymond and Alberta Slavin Endowed Professorship in Allergy and Immunology – On May 29 2008, at the Pere Marquette Gallery, the Department of Internal Medicine will celebrate the establishment of the Raymond and Alberta Slavin Endowed Professorship in Allergy and Immunology honoring the 43 years of service by Dr. Slavin to the Department and Saint Louis University School of Medicine. INTERNAL MEDICINE – JUST THE FACTS
This is the title of a new textbook of internal medicine edited by Paul G. Schmitz, M.D., (editor-in-chief) and Kevin J. Martin, M.B.,B.Ch., (associate editor). This new 800 page textbook covers all aspects of internal medicine in short, summary form
suitable for exam review. Virtually all of the chapters are authored or co-authored by faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University. There are 15 sections in the textbook including Interdisciplinary Medicine, Assessing the Medical Literature and a chapter devoted to each of the major medical specialties and subspecialties. There is also a chapter on psychiatric disorders. The book is published by McGraw Hill Medical in New York.
