“There Is No Other Commandment Greater Than These” By Peter J. Weller
Jesus was asked, “Which commandment is the first of all?” during the final conversation in a series of disputes between Jesus and the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes on theological points. These groups sought to test Jesus’ religious knowledge and determine just who he was and whether he was, as was claimed, the Messiah. Mark writes, “One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that [Jesus] answered them well, he asked him, ‘Which commandment is the greatest of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’ Then the scribe said to him, ‘You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that “he is one, and beside him there is no other”; and “to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,” and : to love one’s neighbor as oneself”- this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.’ When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ After that, no one dared to ask him any questions.” (Mark 12:28-34) Emerson Powery, Professor of Biblical Studies at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania wrote in The Working Preacher, “Throughout Mark’s Gospel, the scribes were always evaluating Jesus’ activities. They judged Jesus theologically, charging him with ‘blasphemy’ because he forgave someone’s sins (2:7); they evaluated Jesus’ eating company (2:16);...they questioned his disciples’ hand-washing practices (7:1-5);...they probed into the origins of Jesus’ authority (11:27-28), which the general populace perceived to be distinctive from the scribes (cf. 1:22); along with Jerusalem priests, they wanted to kill Jesus because they were afraid of his popularity (11:18, 32; 14:1)

I remember sitting in church and listening to Pastor Maureen tell that Luther League did not have any adult leaders and if anyone was interested, to see her. I thought back to how much fun I had in Luther League with Laurie Pemberton and the youth at Immanuel and thinking, "How could I not find 1.5 hours/month to dedicate to helping the youth of our church?" Being a former high school teacher just seemed like a great fit. Recently, I stepped down from my role with Luther League, but continue to be involved in other aspects of the church (teaching high school faith formation, council, exec, Kinnick, education committee, etc.). I really want our youth to want to belong and get involved in the church and its activities because they see that having Christ in their lives is important to them. I try to lead by example and hope that others find that they can use their talents to help to make a difference. If I can find time to volunteer, anyone can! Katie McWhirter
Pastor Maureen-
Thank you so much for the time and consideration
you put into our Mother’s (and gramma’s) final church
service at Immanuel. It was a very personal and
comforting service….and we know where she is now!
Please extend our appreciation to everyone that
helped to organize and work at the coffee after the
service….the bars, table set up with flowers, clean up,
etc. It was such a relief to know that was all taken care
of and done so well. Thank you, thank you!
God’s Blessings to all,
Mike & Diana Pearson and families
Dave and Duane Rarick and families
THANK YOU to Rich Baker (guitar), Bev Bailey (sax), Mike Jewell, and the Jr. Choir under the direction of Sara Bartlett for blessing the worship services on Sunday, October 7th. Our God was joyfully praised through your gift of music and we were blessed.
THANK YOU to Claire Wubbena (organ) and
Bev Bailey (sax) for playing special music on
Sunday, October 14th. This was Claire’s first time
EVER playing the organ. Claire and Bev your
talents brought us joy and was a true gift to God.
THANK YOU to everyone who sent me word, through your cards or gifts, that you appreciate me here at
Immanuel Lutheran. Being a pastor is not an easy calling and yet God blesses the pastor through that call. I
am grateful for and to you and this ministry that we share together. Thank you for the expression of your
gratitude toward me; I am humbled. Kelly Smith, you are an amazing planner and undeterred to show
appreciation even though I said not to. Sunday I was surprised by finding a “Shaped to Serve” devotional book
on the alter during worship. Tuesday was “We are thankful for your shining light!!” (received a flashlight for
my pocketbook). Wednesday was “Living the Sweet Life - We will share Christ with others because you
shared Christ with us!!” (water bottles, yogurt with granola toppings and fruit were served) and I received a pen
and pad and an insulated lunch bag. Thursday was “We need S’more of your good preaching!!” and a bowl of
smore mix was available for enjoyment. Friday was “It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s the SERMONATOR!” and
I received a “The SERMONATOR” t-shirt. WOW, what a week of surprises. Thank you!! ~ Pastor Howard
Thank you to all of you who gave generously to the Luther League

November 2018, LSI Bulletin/Newsletter Article and Story National Adoption Month November is National Adoption Month, a time to honor families who have opened their hearts and homes to children in need. For LSI it is a time to celebrate the families we support through Foster Care and Adoption, and to raise awareness for the hundreds of Iowa children in need of a safe, loving home. In 30 counties in western Iowa, LSI Foster Care and Adoption recruits, licenses, and supports foster and adoptive families to ensure every Iowa child grows up in a safe, stable environment. But more work needs to be done. According to the most recent federal data, more than 100,000 children in the U.S. are waiting to be adopted from foster care, and thousands of teens age out of foster care every year without a permanent family. To learn more about supporting Iowa children in foster care, visit LSIowa.org/Foster, or contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563-676-2065. Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Helping to Carry the Load
Renato and Nellie Jimenez knew they wanted to adopt children. But when they learned about the desperate need for foster families, they also decided to open their home to children in need of safe, temporary care. “We realized there are some big needs out there,” Renato says. “Sometimes, we might not see it. But there are people suffering and struggling. We knew our family could make a difference.” Over the last four years, Renato and Nellie have adopted four children and are currently fostering three. Their children range from 6 months to 14 years of age. The couple enjoys supporting children of all ages, and they focus their parenting on helping them stay connected to their history and culture whenever possible. Especially for older children, Renato says, it is vital to be given a safe space to open up and talk about the past in a healthy way. “The most rewarding experience is the transformation of the kids. They come with baggage and they come hurt. But we can provide a home and love and security for them, so they know they belong in a family,” Renato says. “Be there for the kids. The more healthy and supportive people these kids have around them, the better. Help them carry the load.”

The scribe embraces what Jesus had to say about the first commandment and takes it a step further when he says, “This is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 11:33) He gets it. To love God, and to love neighbor, is indeed more important than burnt offerings and sacrifices. In Hebrews, the author notes that while the priests have to offer sacrifices every day, “that can never take away sins,” Christ “had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins….. [B]y a single offering [Christ] has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:11-18) These commandments that Jesus spoke of remind us to love God first with all the powers we possess, and secondly, to love our neighbors as ourselves. This mean that we put God first in our lives and that we have empathy and compassion and, yes, love for those around us. To love our neighbors as ourselves is a tall order. We may not feel that we know them well enough to love them. It is not easy to love strangers; in today’s world, that could be dangerous. Our neighbors may not even be likable, let alone lovable. We might also consider them to be unworthy of our love. We don’t like their appearance, their beliefs, their values, their race, their ethnicity, and the list goes on. We must also recognize that there are those who do not love or even like themselves very well. If one has little or no love for oneself, then it would follow that one would probably have little or no love for neighbors. What could be the societal ramifications that follow from a lack of love for self? Would it mean more crime or violence? Jesus and the scribe are discussing a commandment here, a rule that is to be observed strictly. A commandment is nota a suggestion or wish or desire. In a religious context, it is to be obeyed. There is no room for excuse or obstinance. Yet, human behavior being what it is, and sin being what it is, despite our best intentions and efforts, we often fail to measure up to the requirements which a commandment imposes. God was exasperated frequently with the ancient Israelites. Many times they became obstinate, distracted, took their eyes off of God, failed to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, and embraced other gods. When they suffered from their errors and begged God to forgive them and take them back, God did, but on God’s schedule, not theirs. The road back, however, was often hard and not painless. God’s capacity to love and to forgive far exceeds our own. God’s patience is enormous. God will not forsake us. He loves us deeply. He sacrificed his Son for us. And for that, we must be truly grateful.

The Water and The Witness Attending the Synod Assembly in May was an opportunity you gave me as your voting member and I am grateful. Having been involved with a Minnesota synod previously I was able to see how the ELCA is alive and well in SE Iowa. Pastor Howard and Mike reported previously on the happenings. I had such a good feeling at this assembly. The hymn sings were uplifting. The enthusiasm from the ELCA speakers was inspiring. Bishop Gordy of Southeast United States synod showed how sparse Lutherans are in some areas. It takes THREE STATES to make his synod. I never would have guessed. What I want to say is go. GO to a synod assembly. LEARN about us Lutherans and what is happening in our church worldwide.
The question they left us with: If Immanuel disappeared from Washington,
would anyone outside our congregation notice? Bev Bailey
