Legendary actor Bob Hope's iconic "space-age" home in Palm Springs, Calif.
has hit the market and is being listed for a cool $50 million.
The sale marks the first time the house, located at 2466 Southridge Drive in a
gated community, will leave the Hope Family and its potential buyer will beamong the few who have seen the inside of the private home.
Designed by late modernist
architect John Lautner in the
1970s, the sprawling 23,366-
square-foot home features a
dramatic concave copper roof
that circles the property and
opens at the center, giving theplace a futuristic look.
Completed in 1980, the mansion
is a mixture of concrete, steel
and glass characteristics and
served as a second home for the
Hopes, who owned other pieces
of real estate in California.
The open-air feel of the home
and its unique rounded shape
reflects its desert location in
Southridge and provides a
stunning panoramic vista
overlooking Coachella Valley
from Banning Pass to Mount
San Jacinto. A boulder in the
middle of the living room also
drives the point home.
"I really think the John Lautner architecture is what makes it so special," Emily
Warner of Murphy O'Brien Public Relations, who is handling the Bob Hope
Estate, told The News.
The mansion has six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and three half-bathrooms. The
spacious home also features a putting green, tennis court and indoor and
outdoor pools, including one in the shape of Hope's profile.

On the wall behind the bar is a
rainforest mural by artist Garth Benton,
whose projects included a 1,000-foot
mural for the J. Paul Getty Museum in
Malibu.
The original design of the Hope
Residence burned down in a fire
accidentally set by a welder's torch
during construction in 1973. The
Hopes made several interior design
changes to the second version of the
mansion -- so much so that Lautner
would later distance himself from the
project.
The Palm Springs residence was put up for sale by Hope's daughter Linda and
is listed by Ann Eysenring of Partners Trust in Beverly Hills along with Patrick
Jordan and Stewart Smith of Windermere Real Estate.
Photos of the inside of the property were unavailable.
The opening at the center of the roof is above an outdoor patio.
