    WATERLOO, ILLINOIS

    Christmas Day

    Friday, December 25, 2020 – 9:00 am

“Making more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ

through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Welcome to Immanuel! Please turn off your cell phones and/or paging devices. Thank you!

If you are a guest, please fill out a guests' card located in the cardholder on the back of each pew. During the offering, place this card in the offering plate.

As you leave, please introduce yourself to the pastors.

Members, please help us love and care for one another by filling out one of our attendance cards. Remember to include all the members of your family who are

present in worship today. If you are communing, please check in the appropriate

place. Thank you for filling out an Attendance-Communion card every time you

attend Church—it helps us keep good records.

We celebrate Holy Communion today! In this Supper of our Lord we receive the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the earthly forms

of bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our

faith. Since this Holy Communion is also a sign of our common confession of

the Christian faith, we welcome to the Lord's Table those who are confirmed

members of our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. If you have any questions,

please feel free to ask the pastor before or after the service.

If for health or personal reasons you cannot drink wine, the lighter colored glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups contain water with a

drop of wine. These special glasses allow communicants to celebrate the Lord's

Supper according to Christ's institution, but have a very small amount of

    alcohol.

    Worship at lmmanuel is...

Christ Centered. We believe that at the heart of worship is the Good News that God has rescued us from our sins through Jesus' death on the cross and

    rising to life again.

Trinitarian. We believe that the object of worship is the only true God-The Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Multigenerational. We believe that it is a great blessing for family members to worship together. Taking seriously Jesus' words, "Let the little children come

to me and so not forbid them" (Mark 10:14), we encourage children to worship

with their parents and grandparents and provide resources such as children's

    bulletins and children's sermons.

Eclectic. Eclectic means, "selecting what seems best of various sources." We believe that we should strive to use the best hymns and practices that the church

has to offer. Our worship may include hymns written 500 years ago as well as

    pieces written 5 months ago.

In preparation for worship we ask that you silence your cell phones and/or

    paging devices. Thank you.

The time before service begins can be a good time to pray and prepare your

heart and mind for worship. You will find helpful prayers on the inside cover of

the hymnal located in the pew in front of you.

    INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy

    Spirit.

    C: Amen.

    OPENING SENTENCES (Psalm 43:4; 124:8)

P: I will go to the altar of God,

C: to God my exceeding joy.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

    CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: Today we celebrate Christmas, the incarnation of Jesus, the

Word of God becoming flesh. Jesus came to bring peace

and joy through all the earth, yet centuries later, our world

is still filled with war and violence, hopelessness and

despair. Too often, we have spread the evils of the world,

rather than the joy and peace of Jesus. But our heavenly

Father invites us to come before Him to ask for His

    forgiveness.

    Silence for reflection.

    P: Heavenly Father,

C: we confess that we have failed to live in the joy and

peace of Jesus. We have taken Your salvation for

granted. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we

know the joy of the Lord.

P: Our heavenly Father sent Jesus to embrace all people. Jesus

comes to heal the sick, to preach good news to the poor,

and to forgive sinners like you and me. Therefore, as a

called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority,

I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. We are joyful in Jesus. We are forgiven in

    Christ.

INTROIT OF THE DAY (Psalm 98:1-4; antiphon: Isaiah 9:6)

P: For to us a child is born,

    C: to us a Son is given;

P: and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His

    name shall be called

    Men: Wonderful Counselor,

    Women: Mighty God,

    Men: Everlasting Father,

    Women: Prince of Peace.

P: Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done

    marvelous things!

C: His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation

    for Him.

P: The LORD has made known His salvation; He has revealed

His righteousness in the sight of the nations.

Men: He has remembered His steadfast love and faithfulness to

    the house of Israel.

Women: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our

    God.

    P: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;

C: break forth into joyous song and sing praises!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy

Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be

    forever. Amen.

5 We light the Christmas candle

And sing with peace and joy.

    Our hope is now begotten

    In Christ, the infant boy.

God’s love with us is dwelling,

    All darkness now dispelling.

P: The Lord be with you.

    C: And also with you.

    P: Let us pray.

C: Almighty God, grant that the birth of Your only-

begotten Son in the flesh may set us free from the

OLD TESTAMENT READING, Isaiah 62:10-12 10Go through, go through the gates; prepare the way for the people; build up,

build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a signal over the peoples. 11Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter

of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his

recompense before him.” 12And they shall be called The Holy People, The

Redeemed of the LORD; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not

    Forsaken.

L: This is the Word of the Lord.

    C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE, Titus 3:4-7 4When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved

us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own

mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6whom he

poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that being justified

by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

L: This is the Word of the Lord.

    HOLY GOSPEL, Luke 2:1-20

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 2nd chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord. 1In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should

be registered. 2This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of

  • 6

Syria. 3And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4And Joseph also

went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David,

which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6And while they

were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her

firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger,

because there was no place for them in the inn. 8And in the same region there

were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an

angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around

them, and they were filled with fear. 10And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for

behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. 11For

unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling

cloths and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there was with the angel a

multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14“Glory to God in the

highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 15When the

angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

“Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the

Lord has made known to us.” 16And they went with haste and found Mary and

Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17And when they saw it, they made

known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18And all who

heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured up all

these things, pondering them in her heart. 20And the shepherds returned,

glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told

    them.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

    NICENE CREED

All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of

God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of

God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten,

not made, being of one substance with the Father, by

whom all things were made; who for us men and for our

salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by

    the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He

suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose

again according to the Scriptures and ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He

  • 8

will come again with glory to judge both the living and

the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of

life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who

with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and

glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in

one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge

one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the

resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to

    come. Amen.

    PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and

for all people according to their needs.

For the faith to greet the news of the Word made flesh with

joy and peace, for the obedience of faith to walk in the light

of His ways, for the strength to be steadfast in this faith,

and for speedy feet to proclaim this message to the world,

let us pray to the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For voices to proclaim faithfully the Word of God, for

listening ears that we grow in knowledge and faith by the

preaching of the Word, for those who deliver to us the

Means of Grace in which we behold God’s glory and

receive it with joy and thanksgiving, let us pray to the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the Church, here and throughout the world, for every

place where the Word has planted hope and displayed

God’s saving glory to the nations, and for the homes in

which we teach this Word to our children and live it out in

holy lives, let us pray to the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For peace in the world, for an end to violence, for the

restoration of hope and lives still suffering from the effects

of the pandemic, for justice, for the will to protect life from

its beginning to its natural end, and for those in need, let us

    pray of the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

  • 9

P: For grace to believe the Word we hear, for repentant hearts

to receive worthily the grace of Christ’s body and blood in

this Holy Communion, for our strong unity in doctrine, and

for our harmony in our life together as the Body of Christ,

the Church, let us pray to the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For those who suffer any need of body or soul, for the sick,

for the aged, for the grieving, and for those in their last

days, [especially...], that the Lord be their healing, strength,

comfort, and peace, let us pray to the Lord.

    C: Lord, have mercy.

P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, O Lord.

    Silence for meditation

P For all things needful to this body and life and for all things

profitable to our salvation, let us pray in the name of Christ,

the Word made flesh, in whom we behold the glory of the

eternal Trinity, now and to the end of the ages.

    C: Amen.

OFFERING (You can place your offering in the plate in the narthex or mail it to the church anytime.)

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + In this Supper of our Lord we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ

under the earthly forms of bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the

strengthening of our faith. Since this Holy Communion is also a sign of how we

commonly confess the Christian faith, we welcome to the Lord’s Table those

who are confirmed members of congregations of The Lutheran Church-Missouri

    Synod.

    PREFACE

P: The Lord be with you. (2 Timothy 4:22)

    C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts. (Colossians 3:1)

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. (Psalm 136)

    PROPER PREFACE

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all

times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord,

almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our

Lord; for in the mystery of the Word made flesh You have

given us a new revelation of Your glory that, seeing You in

the person of Your Son, we may know and love those

things which are not seen. Therefore with angels and

archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and

magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and

    saying:

    SANCTUS (Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9)

(Hosanna is a Hebrew word of praise meaning “save us now.”)

THE LORD’S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13) All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in

heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us

our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against

us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the

    glory forever and ever. Amen.

    DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

LSB 364, “Away in a Manger”

1 Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.

The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

2 The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,

But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.

I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,

And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

  • 12

3 Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay

Close by me forever and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,

And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.

LSB 361, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

1 O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

    The silent stars go by;

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

    The everlasting light.

The hopes and fears of all the years

    Are met in thee tonight.

2 For Christ is born of Mary,

    And, gathered all above

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

    Their watch of wond’ring love.

    O morning stars, together

    Proclaim the holy birth,

And praises sing to God the king

And peace to all the earth!

    3 How silently, how silently

    The wondrous gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts

    The blessings of His heav’n.

    No ear may hear His coming;

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him, still

    The dear Christ enters in.

4 O holy Child of Bethlehem,

    Descend to us, we pray;

Cast out our sin, and enter in,

    Be born in us today.

  • 13

    We hear the Christmas angels

    The great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us,

    Our Lord Immanuel!

LSB 358, “From Heaven Above to Earth I Come”

1 “From heav’n above to earth I come

    To bear good news to ev’ry home;

Glad tidings of great joy I bring,

Whereof I now will say and sing:

2 “To you this night is born a child

    Of Mary, chosen virgin mild;

This little child of lowly birth

Shall be the joy of all the earth.

3 “This is the Christ, our God Most High,

    Who hears your sad and bitter cry;

He will Himself your Savior be

From all your sins to set you free.

4 “He will on you the gifts bestow

Prepared by God for all below,

That in His kingdom, bright and fair,

You may with us His glory share.

5 “These are the signs that you shall mark:

The swaddling clothes and manger dark.

There you will find the infant laid

By whom the heav’ns and earth were made.”

6 How glad we’ll be to find it so!

Then with the shepherds let us go

To see what God for us has done

In sending us His own dear Son.

  • 14

7 Come here, my friends, lift up your eyes,

And see what in the manger lies.

Who is this child, so young and fair?

It is the Christ Child lying there.

8 Welcome to earth, O noble Guest,

Through whom the sinful world is blest!

You came to share my misery

That You might share Your joy with me.

9 Ah, Lord, though You created all,

How weak You are, so poor and small,

That You should choose to lay Your head

    Where lowly cattle lately fed!
