Our balance on the Community Center Loan is now approx.$595,000.00. We have 195 *IHM STAR* families who have adopted the average of $1,000.00 pledge. We need another 400 to reach our goal. The official twelve-month period begins January 1, 2014, so please adopt a $1,000.00 pledge before year-end. Understandably, not everyone can give $1,000.00 but it is important that we have all parish families participate, so please complete a pledge card for whatever amount you can pay over the one-year period. Every dollar counts and everyone’s participation reflects that we all share the same goal to get this loan paid off. Thank you to those who have already submitted their pledge cards. Pastor’s Page Page #7 MARY XI Prior to the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev to power in Moscow, The Soviet Union experienced something of a crisis in leadership, with two elderly senior members of the communist party taking the helm in a period of just three years, following the death of longtime leader Leonid Brezhnev in 1982. These leaders were Antonin Chernenko and Yuri Andropov, both of whom had deep connections with the KGB (the Soviet secret police/spy agency). They were described by TIME magazine as shadowy relics of the Stalinist era, and unlikely to pursue détente (the approach of Brezhnev) with the West.
In fact, declassified KGB documents show that, in the mid-1980s, with Reagan and Thatcher ascendant in the West, with a worldwide economic book that excluded the communist bloc, and perhaps above all, with the “race for space” militarization known as “Star Wars,” Chernenko, An-dropov and the Soviet elite came to a desperate conclusion: the only hope for the communist world was a first-strike nuclear assault on the Amer-ican bases in Western Europe, coupled with a massive invasion by Warsaw Pact forces, which were numerically superior to their NATO counter-parts.
The declassified files show that the plan was to push as far west as Paris, and given the shock of the nuclear strike, and the superiority of the Warsaw Pact forces, this plan just might have succeeded. The idea, evidently, was for Moscow to assure London and Washington that the inva-sion would stop in France, and that there would be no use of nuclear weapons against civilian targets—unless the British and the Americans responded with nuclear weapons. In other words: “Let us take Western Europe,” the aged Soviet leadership would threaten, “or it will be the end of the world.”
This diabolical plot was dealt a death blow not by British or American nukes, but, it would appear, the Immaculate Heart of Mary. IHM Pray for us Father Jim

GARDEN MINISTRY BENEFITS FROM EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT
Andrew Griffin an IHM Boy Scout, Troop 93, took on as his Eagle Scout project the building of a Greenhouse to enable the Garden ministry to propagate vegeta-bles onsite. He raised the funds necessary by holding a car wash, individual donations & a generous donation from the Knights of Columbus. With the assistance of nine of his fellow Scouts, construction began with the foundation on November 2nd., & on November 9th the Greenhouse was completed. The Greenhouse is constructed of an aluminum frame covered with twin polycarbonate panels. It was impressive to watch the Scouts work as a team with Andrew directing the work. Two adults were there for any needed guidance. Thanks to Andrew & his fellow Scouts for donating their time, talent and treasure to benefit the Garden Ministry whose purpose is to provide fresh vegetables to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. You are all appreciated!

If for any reason you are unable to attend Mass and would like to receive the Host at home, please call the Parish Office. / Si por

BAPTISMS / BAUTISMOS:
Parents must complete the Baptism Registration form available in the parish office at least two months in advance
and attend the required baptism class. You must provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Godparents may also
attend the same class or attend one at their local parish and obtain a completion certificate. When choosing your child’s Godparents, please bear in mind that they must be baptized,
confirmed, receive communion regularly in the Church and, if married, they must be married in the Catholic Church. There
can be NO exceptions to these rules.

URGENT NEED—Share- a- Mass Ministry is in urgent need for a volunteer driver to bring a couple who lives in Sommerset III to Mass on Sundays. The couple is bilin-gual, so any mass is fine. EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE—We want to recognize and thank Iris Villegas Nahm for her diligent efforts in pro-curing our new AED (Defibrillator) recently installed in our Parish Hall. We also want to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to American Medical Response (AMR), for their most generous donation of the free Defibrillator Equipment.
MARIAN MOVEMENT OF PRIESTS Come and join us on January 4, 2014, as we begin the first cenacle of the Marian Movement of Priests at IHM. This cenacle group prays the Rosary and offers up the
intentions primarily for the Pope and all priests worldwide.
We will meet the first Saturday of each month during 2014 in Hall “C” at 10:00 am.
Fr, Jim Sullivan will be the advisor for our group sessions.
