This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. The Sacrament of Bap-tism is at the heart of being a Christian and all of the other sacraments flow from it. When asked “why are we baptized” or “what does baptism do for us” most people are able to quickly rattle off the answers: “it frees us from original sin and makes us members of the church community.” Both of these answers are correct. However, if that is the case then why was Jesus baptized? He had no sin and he was also calling the community of disciples to him; he didn’t need to become part of any community. Jesus is God and God is already a community or relationship of three so there was no need. In Matthew’s Gospel, it wasn’t until after his baptism that he began teaching and performing miracles. You see, Jesus’ baptism was about his MISSION. On the next page, Fr. Chumo gives his insights and tells us what that mission is so I won’t get too specific here (you will have to read his article). What I do want to say is that our baptism isn’t only about RECEIVING freedom from sin and MEMBERSHIP into a community. Our baptism is about becoming part of Jesus mission and PARTICIPATING in it. That is, to bring the love of God through our words, actions and service to others. Many times we hear people say “I re-member when I MADE my First Communion…” We must remember that sacra-ments aren’t “made.” They are meant to be celebrated, lived and expressed in our words and actions. So don’t let your baptism simply be something that you RE-CEIVED or you had done to you once. LIVE IT! Use the gifts God has given you to bring the mission of Jesus to the world. Thanks for reading. WINTER WEATHER GUIDELINES If Ithaca City Schools CLOSE due to winter weather, the Office will also CLOSE. 7:00am masses will be cancelled, however 12:10pm masses will still be held. Check the MyParish app as all updates will be listed. You can download the parish app by going to the app store on your cell phone and search for MyParish App. Once it is loaded, search for Immaculate Conception Church, Ithaca. Click on the parish and you are all set.
• End-of-year statements for tax purposes are currently being worked on and will be ready for distribution soon. If you do NOT need a copy of your state-ment, please let the office know. If you are aware of any family members, friends or neighbors who have moved or are currently living in the South, please let the office know.
• The Office will be CLOSED on Monday, January 20, 2020 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Mass is at 9:00am.
We are looking for new volunteers to assist in the Newsletter upon the resignation of the editor, who has filled the position for many years and is now stepping down. Please contact the Parish Office if you feel you can assist. The Newsletter comes out twice a year and we are beginning work on the Spring 2020 edition.

Notre Dame High School, Grades 7-12, is hosting an OPEN HOUSE on Tues-day, January 28, 2020 from 6:30-8pm as part of Catholic Schools Week. Visitors can meet faculty, take a student-led tour, and hear presentations on admissions and financial aid. Busing from the Ithaca area is available for interested students daily to/from Notre Dame. The high school is lo-cated at 1400 Maple Avenue, Elmira.
The Ithaca Loves Life local March For Life will take place in Ithaca on Friday, January 24th beginning at 12:45 PM from the steps of Immaculate Conception church. Save the date and join us!

January is Immaculate Conception Parish’s month to supply basic needs to Catholic Charities so they may help those in need. Items sought are such things as tooth-brushes & toothpaste, paper towels, toilet tissue, deodorant, powder, soap, shampoo, kleenex, detergent, etc. There will be large blue bins at the main (middle) & by the parking lot entrance of the church for your donations. Thank you in advance for your help & support.

There is a difference between John’s Baptism and a Christian one. John’s
baptism, the baptism received by Jesus, was at the time performed by many
different sects. People were immersed into water to signify the end of the past
life and a beginning of a new life, born anew at that very moment. People
who were willing to become disciples of John were baptized.. Those who
were baptized were encouraged to change their way of life in preparation of
the coming Messiah.
Why was Jesus Baptized then? From the start of His public ministry, He
wants to side with sinners, to be identified with them, to take on Himself their
slavery and walk with them along the road to the ultimate freedom. Do we
identify with those who are struggling and have gone the wrong way or do we
just condemn them? The Baptism of Jesus was accompanied by three signs:
the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended like a dove and the voice
was heard; these were to identify Jesus as the beloved son of God, the Messi-
ah sent to redeem us all.
