P. Joachim Lepcha

Holy Family

During these pandemic dominated months, we all felt that our family home is the place where we grumble the most but are treated the best. It is the haven of refuge amidst the crises of our age. During this difficult time one way or the other we experienced the family values though it was much to be together, but it was reason enough to be there for one another. One can im-agine how hard it is for those who do not have families and the support they need.

Apart from our natural family, the bonding together in family groups is both instinctive and necessary to the human welfare, such as our Church family coming together during the Eucharistic celebration, praying for each other, or sharing our need with one another. Saint Pope John Paul II said, “We must treasure our families, for the future of humanity passes by way of the family.” There is a Mexican proverb which says that, none, but a mule denies his family. During this Christmas Octave, we have a special liturgical celebration, the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Sunday, December 27.

Scott Hahn, in his book “Joy to the World” writes meaningfully about the family. He writes “Jesus did not come into this world alone. He came into this world by way of family, and he brought us salvation so that we could share membership in the family of God. That is the very meaning of salvation and the meaning of Christmas. “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, He gave power to become children of God.” (John 1:12) …” “He emphasizes, more of God’s sons and daughters are members of His family.” He also adds, “The truth of Christmas begins with a family…. we are Christ’s family, and so the joy of Christmas belongs to us.”

The Church invites us during this Christmas season to ponder upon the importance of the Family and to become a holy family. In imitation of Mary, Joseph and Jesus as a holy family is not easy. We can see how much they had gone through to be holy. Problems began even before Jesus was born, when Joseph was about to break his engagement to Mary; then Jesus was born in a stable that probably was smelly and dirty, may be damp and cold. The Gospel of Luke shows that presenting Jesus in the temple, making that offering required sacrifice according to law of the Lord. They were poor but they offered the sacrifice of the poor. Their offering day of a child to the temple was supposed to be a happy day but it turned out to be a sad day for Mary after receiving the chilling prophecy of Simeon. (Lk. 2:34-35). Joseph was not prepared to flee to Egypt but once he learned that the King was planning on killing their child, he had to; and they became refu-gees for a few years in a strange land. One thing that kept them moving ahead was the grace of God.

The Second reading brings the secret of being a holy family, is practicing the ordinary virtues we learn, like kindness, humility, gentleness, patience (Col.3:12-21). The Gospel of Luke highlights this reality of life of every family today. They are going through so many problems and difficulties, but we must be faithful to God at all times; and we must deal with each other with fairness, kindness, patience and love.

May God’s blessing be with you and your families today and throughout the coming year!

Prayer to St. Joseph

We need only ask Saint Joseph for the grace of graces: our conversion.

Let us now make our prayer to him: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son;

in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father

and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,

and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Oracion a San Jose

DID YOU KNOW?

Talk to teens about posting photos

The pictures we share on Instagram and other social media can reveal much more information than just the picture we want our followers to see. If your teens are on social media, talk to them about the dangers of posting photos with potentially identifying information — posing in front of their schools or cars, tagging their location, or providing other clues that would give a predator easy access. Consider having a family screening contract, where parents approve photos before children can post. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Technology Safety” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

Processions

Why does the liturgy begin with a procession? It is not just a practical matter of getting the ministers of the liturgy from the sacristy to the sanctuary. The procession is a powerful sign of who we are as Christian people. We are not static, staying in one place. We are going somewhere. Our procession leads us to the altar, sign of Christ’s presence in our midst. We move, we process, because we recognize our need for what Christ is preparing for us at that table. We go forward eagerly, because we are hungry for that heavenly food. This procession is an orderly one: servers, deacon, priest presider. Each is set apart by distinctive vesture: albs for the altar servers, dalmatic for the deacon, chasuble for the priest. The procession is an image of the hierarchical structure of the Church. On a deeper level it is an image of unity in diversity. We are all on a journey to the heavenly city, but each of us is clothed with different gifts. We all receive the call to service, but not in the same way. Only by coming together in all our wonderful variety can we achieve the work of the kingdom.
