GROUND MOSQUITO SPRAYING SCHEDULED FOR

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

The City of Duncanville, at the recommendation and in cooperation with the Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS), will be conducting ground spraying against mosquitos on Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the Highgate area located southeast of Hwy 67.

A positive mosquito trap pool for West Nile Virus was reported by the County in this area.

City Officials encourage all residents living near this area to remain indoors and to bring their pets inside during spraying.  City Staff will continue to monitor areas where

mosquito breeding is mostly like to occur and encourage residents to protect themselves even after spraying by using insect repellent with DEET and to continue doing their part to prevent the spreading of the West Nile Virus by removing all areas of standing water, reporting all pools that are not well-maintained and abandoned homes where mosquitos are likely to breed to the Health and Code Enforcement Departments at 972-780-5041. For more information on how to prevent the West Nile

Virus visit the City’s website at www.duncanville.com or dallascounty.org.

School, he also attended St. Philip’s School and Community Center, T.L. Marsalis Elementary, Atwell Junior High School. Active in the R.O.T.C. and Pathfinders; Andre was a member of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church.

Andre is stationed in Japan with his wife, Emma, and three children. Even before he donned a uniform, Andre was known as respectful, loving, considerate, intelligent and a true gentleman. He was never, nor ever has he been a suspect and it is my prayer that he never runs into anyone who subjects him to the abuses that many before him have suffered through.

#HeIsNotASuspect is a counter-stereotyping campaign designed to challenge negative images of young African American men.

I Messenger is joining Essence Magazine in inviting our readers to post on Instagram and Facebook photos of themselves and a young Black man they care about—a son, brother, nephew, cousin, neighbor or grandson—with a few words explaining why he's so much more than a stereotype, using the hashtag #HeIsNotASuspect.

By Eva D. Coleman

He was committed to serving others.  His name was Cecil.

A recent screening of Lee Daniels’ The Butler provided such a distinct

touch of humanity and reality for me personally, that it’s downright scary.

The main character Cecil Gaines, played by Forest Whitaker, hands us his life on a silver platter.  He served as a butler at The White House over many years, spanning eight presidencies.  The film is based on the life of Eugene Allen and is adapted from an article that was written by Wil Haygood of the Washington Post.

The film reminded me so much of my own Cecil.  I’m still dealing with the death of my husband, Cecil Coleman, who lost his battle with cancer July 25, 2011.  He too was committed to serving others, devoting his life to many years in the limousine industry.

Throughout the film, clever editing provided many parallels, such as the scene that included a split screen of a civil-rights-era lunch counter sit-in alongside another of the

President and dignitaries being served at a White House dinner table.  Emotions ran high throughout the movie as flashbacks provided ugly truths of what African Americans endured in fights for equality.

I was drawn into the countless number of scenes that simply focused on Cecil’s hands.  Sometimes gloved in white.  Sometimes placing gloves on.  I envisioned my Cecil’s hands which I had seen many times placed on car door handles.  Sometimes opening doors.  Sometimes closing doors.

Always extending his hand to assist.  He wouldn’t dare let me or his daughters open our own car doors!

Those in the service industry are sometimes looked down upon by their own family members and outsiders.

However, they often share a bond of respect with whom they serve that is unparalleled in other industries.

This film gives us a glimpse into those dynamics as well.

A well-known cast of characters, including Oprah Winfrey, give stellar performances.  This film is full of many acting powerhouses, reinforcing the credibility it so deserves.

Having gracefulness in serving others is a skill.  Those who master that skill command attention.  I imagine my Cecil standing and waiting outside a chariot in heaven, ready to extend his hand to ensure his passenger has the best experience ever.

I encourage everyone to experience Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

Last year more than 600 people packed out the center and this year organizers are expecting the crowd and vendors to double.

This year, Dallas area natural hair enthusiast will be treated to a larger hair expo over flowing with national speakers, vendors, on site catering and information workshops.

“The purpose of the event is to further educate African-American women about their natural hair and how to maximize hair growth through nutrition and proper hair care,” said Audra Cooper, event sponsor and owner of Naturally Divine Beauty Supply and Salon in Dallas.

This year speakers will be Audrey Davis-Sivasothy author of the book The Science of Black Hair.  Charnika Jett aka Chary Jay is a journalist and videographer based in Detroit, Michigan.

Karen Wilson is a licensed cosmetologist and instructor with over 15 years experience in the beauty and hair industry. Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT is on a mission to radically change the health and health-care in America.

You Can Make a Difference ...Kicking Off Philanthropy Month With

Savannah State University The Tom Joyner Foundation is kicking off a

Philanthropy month by calling on all alumni, friends and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to join us and Allstate Insurance,to help raise scholarship funds as part of the fifth annual Allstate Quotes for Education program.

For every person who receives an insurance

quote from a participating Allstate agent and mentions Quotes for Education between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2013, Allstate will donate $10, up to a total donation of $150,000.

Participants in this program will also have a chance to vote for the HBCU of their choice to receive an additional $50,000 donation for scholarships. In 2012, Lincoln University of Missouri won the inaugural competition and distributed scholarship funds to 25 students.

At HBCUs, where a greater percentage of

students rely on parent loans, the volume fell 36 percent. This drop in funding translated to a loss of more than $150 million and forced an estimated 28,000 students to drop out of school due to lack of funds.

To participate in the Quotes for Education program, HBCU supporters should visit www.allstate.com/represent to find a nearby participating agent or receive a quote online.

Ask Gwendolyn

Baines

My Roommate’s Boyfriend

Wrecked My CarDear Gwendolyn:

Last year, I moved off-campus and took in a roommate. After two months, my roommate moved in her boyfriend without discussing it with me. We had been friends since middle school. I had no idea she had changed. She drinks, does drugs, and steals not only my clothes, but also steals from department stores.

I am up for a scholarship to graduate school in the east. One night while I was sick in bed with the flu, my roommate’s boyfriend went out in my car. He wrecked it and now I owe tons of money because he was not on my insurance.

Gwendolyn, how can I make him pay the expenses incurred? I cannot afford an attorney.

Ruth

Dear Ruth:Even if you could afford an attorney,

you would only be throwing away your money. Think about it. Have him prosecuted. You also need to ask your roommate to leave. This may mean for you to move back on campus. You don’t want anything to jeopardize your scholarship.

I know when you go east to graduate school, you will need your car. But don’t worry about it. If the university has housing for graduate students, live there. Then, soon look for an apartment off-campus. Living away from school is more of a graduate student’s lifestyle. When seeking off-campus housing, get within walking distance from school or take public transportation.

Ruth, your car incident is not the top issue. Clear your house before you are involved in a drug bust. And remember, Ruth, people do change and not always for the better. That’s why when trying to become a success, friends (and sometimes family) are few. I know you have heard the statement, “It’s lonely at the top.” That is not true. There are people at the top and they all have ambition, goals, and high character. But if you don’t hurry and rid yourself from your roommate and her kind, making it to the top — won’t be your concern.

continue her education this year and study for a Doctoral Degree in Theology.

Doris Williams is truly a multi-tasker.  She is the wife of Mr. Hiawatha Williams, mother of two great sons, Joshua and Steven Williams.  Before being employed

at Williams Chicken, she home schooled her sons from kindergarten through 12th grade and they're

successful in their chosen careers.

In her quest to give back, Doris Williams founded Righteous Wisdom Services, Inc. (RWS) in November

2012.  RWS provides tutorial services, academic enrichment, mentoring and life skills to inner city

ButlerBrown Sugar Suite presents: Zo! "ManMade" Tour

(producer/keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music)

w/special guest Carmen Rodgers & DJ Sheka Booker

 What is Brown Sugar Suite?

This live music REVIVAL will take you on a journey back to when you first fell in love with

GOOD music. Giving you the thrill of of real hip-hop, jazz, R&B and neo-soul vibes.

REMEMBER: "IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT... YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING

DIFFERENT!"Lorenzo Ferguson, a.k.a "Zo!": producer/

keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music

Music was always present in and around the Ferguson house, which led to Zo! taking piano

lessons at age 6… which he absolutely despised. The idea of working toward a Major League

Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the

concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick

with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his

parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out.

Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each

album release.

Carmen Rodgers“Rodgers lets the listener (and her man) know from

the get go where things stand, opening with a defiant tone on the neo-soul midtempo, "Tell Your Story": "Tell your story at the door / 'cause I've heard it all before / and now I'm not so sure if I want this love anymore." By the time of the terrific next song, the acoustic gem "Home," Carmen is more reflective

but just as resolved to end the relationship: "You say you want to come home / but home is where the

heart lived / and I just want to move on / so should you."”— Chris Rizik, SoulTracks.com

Katrina Anniversary Event

An Evening of Art, Film, and Literature with a New Orleans

Flavor

A special upcoming event Saturday, August 31 will mark the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a film screening, book signing, Q&A, art, dance, and special guests—all with a New Orleans flavor.

Remembering Katrina includes a screening of the National Geographic film Deadly Floods, and a special appearance Imani Williams, a Katrina survivor featured in the film. The event will also include a book signing by Lynette Norris Wilkinson, author of the award-winning book UNTOLD: The New Orleans 9th Ward You Never Knew (www.HurricaneKatrinaStories.com). Wilkinson, Williams and other Katrina survivors featured in

the

book will engage the audience in a lively Q&A session. The audience will also be treated to a demonstration of the famous New Orleans second line by Choreographer and

Performing Artist Michelle Gibson, followed by audience participation. Audience members have a chance to win prizes and

enjoy New Orleans style refreshments.

The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the South Dallas Cultural Center near Fair Park. Michelle Gibson will also perform from 5 to 7 p.m. in Part 1 of Remembering Katrina in an event commemorating the opening of a special art installation on New Orleans at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Both events are free and open to the public.

Proceeds from Wilkinson’s book UNTOLD will benefit residents of the New Orleans Lower 9th Ward, the area so devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Wilkinson grew up in the Lower 9th Ward and says the book is her way of doing what she can to help her community.

The commemorative event is sponsored by the South Dallas Cultural Center and The Dallas Weekly. For more information, contact Lynette Norris Wilkinson at 972-283-0586 or [email protected].

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
