For at least eight of the 18 years that the Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon has been raising funds for area programs, especially those benefiting low-to-moderate income families, singer, songwriter, Miles Jaye has been a strong supporter.

He returns to Dallas, with long-time activist, actor, author and entertainer Dick Gregory (who has attended every year) for the launching of I Messenger Enterprises and the 19th annual bowl-a-thon.

The two will take to the stage at the African American Museum on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

Following Gregory’s performance, Jaye will entertain attendees with his mellow sounds.

The native New Yorker studied music theory and classical violin for more than 10 years at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Saratoga School for Orchestral Studies and Brooklyn College.

An accomplished musician and producer, Jaye is best known for his chart-topping hits, "Let’s Start Love Over", "Heaven" and "Objective" featuring Grover Washington, Jr. His heart wrenching "I’ve Been A Fool For You" has become one of radio’s favorite R&B classics.

While Jaye laid the groundwork for excellence with his three highly acclaimed CD’s on Island Records, MILES, STRONG and IRRESISTIBLE; he continued that standard of excellence on his own Black Tree Records with titles such as the ODYSSEY, DIVINE ASCENSION, ROMANTIC

STORM, TIME TO GET MY MIND RIGHT and HUMANITY.

Now under Miles Jaye Davis Productions, his extensive training as a classical and jazz violinist is evident on his latest release ATTENERGY, the voice on violin project which is an exceptional musical "coming out celebration" with sixteen beautifully crafted performances.

Now a Floridian, Jaye enjoys a long-standing reputation as an R&B and Contemporary Jazz writer/producer, having partnered with some of the giants of jazz on his recordings such as George Duke, Roy Ayers, Nat Adderley, Jr., Rachelle Ferrell, Grover Washington, Jr. and Branford Marsalis. The list of notables with which Jaye has shared the concert stages of the world is too extensive to include here.

Jaye is especially proud of writing and producing six tracks on the certified Gold JOY CD from his mentor, legendary R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass. A prolific composer, Jaye has penned and recorded more than 50 original compositions and has the unique distinction of recording no less than 12 different musical instruments on several of his critically acclaimed CD’s.

In addition to side-man duties early in his career for songstress, Phyllis Hyman, balladeer, Jon Lucien and jazz guitarist Eric Gale, Jaye served two years as lead-singing Cop for the hit pop group that brought you YMCA, Macho Man and In the Navy - THE VILLAGE PEOPLE.

Jaye is also a novelist, playwright, art student and an award-winning journalist. He is an active supporter of

campaigns for AIDS Awareness, Breast Cancer research and an advocate for victims of domestic violence. He also actively supports arts education in public schools.

Dick Gregory was on the frontline in the sixties during the Civil Rights Era; today he continues to be a "drum major for justice and equality."

Gregory, celebrated his 80th birthday in Dallas last year during the Don’t Believe the Hype weekend. He’s an African American comedian and civil rights activist whose social satire changed the way white

Americans perceived African American comedians since he first performed in public. Dick Gregory entered the national comedy scene in 1961 when Chicago's Playboy Club (as a direct request from publisher Hugh Hefner) booked him as a replacement for white comedian, 'Professor' Irwin Corey.

Gregory's activism continued into the 21st Century. In response to published allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had supplied cocaine to predominantly African American areas in Los Angeles, thus spurring the crack epidemic, Gregory protested at CIA headquarters and was arrested. In 1992 he began a program called "Campaign for Human Dignity" to fight crime in St. Louis neighborhoods.

In 1973, the year he released his comedy album Caught in the Act, Gregory moved with his family to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he developed an interest in vegetarianism and became a nutritional consultant. In 1984 he founded Health Enterprises, Inc., a company that distributed weight loss products.

In 1987 Gregory introduced the Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet, a powdered diet mix, which was immensely profitable.

He continues to lead a very demanding life, with speaking engagements and addressing issues while pricking the consciousness of the world.

Message for the Class of 2013By Cheryl Smith

This is an exciting time of year for many families. Celebrations abound as graduations are held for everyone from preschoolers to post doctoral scholars.

There will be speakers who challenge, inspire, excite, entertain, provoke thought and, yes, bore their audiences.

Some ceremonies will be full of dignity, pomp and circumstance and some will sadly, have to be stopped from time to time to quiet down an overzealous graduate’s cheering section.

Whatever the situation, this is undeniably an important time in the lives of many.

I want to focus on graduating high school seniors for a moment. While some are vowing to never enter another classroom, others

are preparing for possibly as much as a decade of continuing education in pursuit of higher degrees.

Some parents are saying, “my child is not college material.”Okay, what are the alternatives and will a few years of college hurt

them?While participating in several discussions about the education

crisis in America, many solutions were offered.One parent suggested that junior and senior years of high school be

eliminated. That suggestion led to a lengthy conversation as parents expressed their frustration with the lack of “learning” they perceived and the increase in disciplinary problems with teachers and students.

As I look back over my 1st through 12th grades, I have quite a few memories:

In kindergarten, there was a little boy who kept sitting in our seats and farting whenever one of the girls would leave their seats.

In 2nd grade I vowed my love for black-eyed peas, just because my “best” friend liked them -- wasn’t til over a decade later that I realized I would never see her again and I haven’t eaten a pea since, on anyone’s New Year’s Day even.

In 3rd grade a teacher refused to acknowledge my hand when I had to go to the restroom - I was traumatized and my mother had some choice words.

In 6th grade we had high school students as our teachers for part of the year because Newark teachers were out on strike--so we partied a lot!

In 7th grade, I began putting together my first newspaper, in my history class. I still recall that mimeograph machine!

In 8th grade, I joined the bowling team and each student had to present the news of the day in our history class.

Then it was on to high school where I joined the newspaper staff, played softball, was involved with student council and a number of other activities.

There was also quite a bit of time, I recall, to get into trouble. Did I ever skip school? Sure!Did I ever do anything inappropriate with a teacher? Heck no!Drugs? Sex? Alcohol? Cigarettes? Definitely not!There are so many other memories. Like the great teachers, Miss

Constantinople - who reminded me of Honey West (actress Anne Francis); Mrs. Meisel - who was from the “Show Me State” and always

pointed that out to us; Mrs. Hill - who taught sewing and had such a gentle spirit. Actually I could spend all day in Mrs. Hill’s class because she loved her students and it showed.

Of course there was fun with the coaches, like Bob Lester and Bruce and Keith Hinton.

Also, looking back, there was plenty of devilment to get into, but there was also a certain innocence.

These days it seems like our children are dealing with so much more.

We had three, possibly four television channels to clog our brains. Cell phones, computers, IPads, I Pods, videos, CDs -- not even in our wildest dreams.

So what’s wrong with our school system, our parents, our children?Good question and there are so many answers.Without blaming anyone, I think we can all agree that we have

some work to do.Parents have to become more involved. Administrators must

listen to teachers and those teachers who are clueless must realize their purpose. Students must be provided with the necessary elements as home and school to achieve success. Teachers have to have the resources to do their jobs.

If a teacher hates going to work every day, they should quit. If a teacher thinks negatively about the students or feels that “it’s

up to the student to get everything” -- time for a profession change.If teachers have to spend more time being disciplinarians and the

school nurses distributing pharmaceuticals --how can you expect morale to be high?

If the focus is on athletics over academics -- who is in control?If the parents are not providing the basic needs so that a student

can go to school without the weight of the world on their shoulders, with the proper nutrition, rest and support-- there’s a problem.

If the administration and legislators are so focused on those “money-making” standardized tests that they are failing to provide curriculums that prepare students to be productive citizens in life.

If teachers are afraid of what I will call “overzealous” parents or “violent” students, how can they focus on teaching?

Or, if students have to worry about whether their teacher or other students will molest them --- well, we can see why there are so many problems.

As we graduate yet another class, we have to become more committed to ensuring that future classes are better equipped to deal and compete in a global society. We need to pay our teachers better and we need to have a program that truly benefits the children.

We need to start teaching foreign languages at a younger age and we need to revamp the “substitute teacher” model.

Just a few things to think about as we look toward the Class of 2014.



The subject today is “Faith Walk.” Can somebody really explain this to me? I’m not trying to be funny.

On the contrary, I’m trying to be real and gain more perspective on what some have told me I’m going through. “I’m watching you go through a transformation,” some have said. “As you go through this walk,” others have come up with, many have used that exact

phrase ‘faith walk,’ when trying to explain their view of me trying desperately to simply demonstrate a new attitude about being saved. No matter how trite it may

sound to you, I am taking this saved thing as serious as I can. I just know it’s more than just a feeling. It’s very tangible to me. I am just being curious about the

walk reference. I guess when you think about

it, many in the Bible had truth revealed to them in a walk, on a journey, while going from one place to another, or, in the spiritual travel of a dream.

As simple as this analogy is, it’s rather eye opening to embrace the significance of walking with someone you respect, admire, love, or someone you can really learn from.

One of the more memorable experiences of my life was walking with either one of my children when they were toddlers. There was something about their discovering and exploring the world without care or fear because they had me with them.

Have you ever witnessed this? Have you ever had the experience of walking and talking with another human being with who you were in total sync? That’s got to be one of the reasons people refer to discovering God as faith walking.

The effort to get closer to God requires movement. I think the walk reference was probably someone’s spiritual attempt to describe an effort to follow a path laid down by Christ. A great example has to be Enoch. “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” Genesis 5:24.

The Bible talks about walking humbly, walking in the Light, walking with the wise, walking together, walking in counsel and walking on water. The point seems to be that the Christian life is a journey, an experience we desire to be able to talk to and with God. If we’re truly blessed, maybe God will talk back.

Searching for Him here on earth is a spiritual experience we’re blessed to have. To walk with the Lord can only be described as a faith step; once taken, life changes. You change. I know I did.

So maybe I’ve kind of answered my own questions about this walking in faith thing. It is merely a public or private declaration that you’re letting God order your steps.

I believe if you can allow yourself to submit in this way, God will lead you directly to Him. “When Jesus spoke again to the people He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

So this walk thing can be interpreted literally from the standpoint that you can actually connect with God. You can walk with Him as Enoch did.

You can also hope and pray that God will take you too. I believe that’s the point, isn’t it? So when you get up tomorrow, think about this and really try to let God order your steps. Make a concerted effort to listen and hear what He’s telling you and, where He’s trying to lead you.

After all, they say faith comes by hearing. What better way to hear than to take a stroll with the Lord. Try letting Him lead, let Him suggest and yes, even let Him command us to walk His way. At the very least you should consciously try it one day. You might find that God shows up in the strangest places. You will see him in the strangest faces. But one thing is for sure -- if you intentionally go looking for Him, you won’t be alone for long.

God has a wondrous way of showing up right on time, when He knows somebody is indeed seeking Him out.

Remember, though, the first step is the one you take.

Sports historian and photographer, John Posey, in collaboration with Arlington Wings To Go Owners, Gwen and Travis Johnson, will host a reception celebrating the one year anniversary of the hugely popular “Sports Legacy Gallery.” The reception will held on June 23rd from 3:30-6:30 p.m., at Wings To Go Arlington. There will be a short program hosted by Arlington Sam Houston Athletic Coordinator, Anthony Criss. Legendary Fort Worth Dunbar basketball coach, Robert Hughes, will autograph copies of his book and a special souvenir postcard. Jaadde Turk will be playing musical selections. Jaade is a concert cellist in the University of Missouri Orchestra. Jordan McHenry, AKA “Gunna”, will be on hand to sign copies of his demo CD “Still On It.” Area athletes will also be in attendance. Food and refreshments will be served. Dr. CL Williams, host of the popular DRCL Hawaii Weekend Show, will be on hand to interview selected athletes and coaches for his radio show. What do you get when you mix a top movie director with an A-list Hollywood actor armed with enough power and influence to co-produce a film starring his own son?

AFTER EARTH. Written by Gary Whitta

(screenplay), M. Night Shyamalan (screenplay) and Will Smith (story), and directed by Shyamalan, AFTER EARTH stars Jaden Smith and Will Smith, real-life father and son, as on-screen father and son duo, Cypher and Kitai Raige.

Oscar-nominated Sophie Okonedo co-stars as Cypher’s wife, Faia.

Known to dabble in the mysterious, sci-fi/fantasy genre, Philadelphia native M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE, SIGNS, THE VILLAGE, THE LAST AIRBENDER) collaborated with fellow Philly native, actor and recording artist, Will Smith, and according to Smith, after considering a few projects, decided on AFTER EARTH.

The premise of the movie is Cypher and Kitai’s aircraft

crash lands on Earth 1,000 years after total devastation has forced the entire human race to flee the planet, leaving only predatory creatures behind that have evolved to kill humans.

With all of the other passengers fatally injured in the crash and Cypher critically

injured and unable to move, his teenage son, Kitai is forced to set out on a perilous journey through the uncharted territory to retrieve a beacon that will help them return home.

Historically, I have been a fan of Will Smith’s work, but I thought this film was “just okay.”

In typical M. Night fashion, the film was generously sprinkled with creepy crawlies and predators, including a relentless alien creature, known as an Ursa that escaped captivity during the crash.

This beast is the same type of beast that killed Kitai’s older sister, Senshi (Zoë Kravitz) when he was younger. So in addition to his fear of facing the unknown on Earth, he struggles with the memories of his sister’s

murder and his desire to be like and impress his high-ranking military officer father.

This role shows us a more mature side of Jaden’s acting chops, although I enjoyed his dramatic performances better in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and the reboot of THE KARATE KID.

If I had to pick a favorite part of the movie, it would be the ending scene between the two Smith men, where the son finally receives approval and validation from his father.

With a running time of 100 minutes, this latest release by Sony Pictures is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and some disturbing images.

Who would have ever thought that a black man from the South Side of Chicago, with no college degree, no formal training in radio, TV, or writing, and the youngest son to a single 17 year-old teenaged mother with three children, would one day lead civil rights protest and help to elect the first black President. Life is truly amazing!

I am proud of what I have accomplished with my life and look forward to what is to come next. Life is full of new beginnings, whether it’s a new relationship or a new business venture; change is the one constant...and we must learn to embrace it.

For years I’ve encouraged you to step out on faith to live your dream, to never compromise your principles, and most importantly, not to be afraid to try something new, but above all else, dare to be different. Well, it’s time for me to practice what I preach!

When I began writing books in 1993, my only goal was to have a positive impact and challenge people to think outside the box. In 1995 I took that leap of faith and left my job with a four-year-old child to support, three thousand dollars in my pocket, and a dream. And as strange as this may sound, there was never a doubt in my mind that I would make it.
