Organised by University of Genova: • DIST, Department of Informatics, Systems, Telecommunications • DIMEC, Department of Mechanics and Machine Design Organising IMEKO Technical Committees: Traceability in Metrology – TC8 Metrological Infrastructures – TC11 Measurement of Human Functions – TC18 Following the success of the 1st International Symposium on Measurement, Analysis and Modeling of Human Functions held in Sapporo during 2001, the IMEKO Technical Committee 18 (Measurement of Human Functions), in colla- boration with SICE (The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers), and IEEE (Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society), is presenting the 2nd ISHF Symposium. The goal of the Conference is to confirm its role of international reference forum for discussing and exchanging information on the theo- retical, experimental, and applied aspects of human functions. The Symposium will occur as a joint event with the 1st Mediterranean Conference on Measurement sponsored by IMEKO Technical Committee 8 (Traceability in Metrology) and 11 (Metrological Infrastructures). The Conference will focus on methodological aspects of Measurement Science such as uncertainty evaluation for the measurement results, evalua- tion of measurement standards, quality assurance of measuring and test equipment. A dedicated session on “Metrology, quality and trade in the Mediterranean Area” will be included, as a spe- cial topic of the Conference. These events will be held in Genova, which will be the European Capital of Culture in 2004, serving as a meeting point for different people, for exchanging ideas, in view of a common benefit. Genova, whose name comes from the Latin word Janua for Door, has been in the centuries a door connecting Europe with the different countries and cultures of the Mediterranean basin and thus is an appropriate site for a Joint Conference which looks at the world with a special attention to the Mediterranean Area. Accordingly, the Congress will address difficult measurement problems which involve industry, trade, environment, people and human functions and require the pre- cise definition of standards and protocols, as well as their equi- valence at international level. He was an important patron of the arts and he commissioned Perin del Vaga, Raffaello’s pupil and main assi- stant, to decorate the Palace. The terraces of the Palace overlook Italian-style gardens, ador- ned by marble sculptures, including the Fountain of the Triton, by Montorsoli, Michelangelo’s pupil. So it will be a great occasion for a scientific meeting in a fasci- nating historical environment.
