Step up to the Plate and “Serve”
My goodness, where has the year gone? As I take a few minutes to write my closing comments for 2014, I took some time to review my calendar for what I have done both personally and for our Lions District and to take a few minutes to see what lies ahead in 2015. Golly, if I were to say “a lot”, I think that might be an understatement by any account. As we head into the New Year, we all reflect on what the last year was like, the good parts and the not so good parts. For me, the good parts far outnumber the bad ones, but as such, each individual is different. So as the saying goes, “Out with the bad, In with the new”, Happy New Year all. For each of us, the year 2015 will bring many changes. For me in six months, a very positive move in the realm of Lionism, being our District Governor. For those of you have been there, you know what a daunting task you are faced with. For me I am looking forward to the challenges that will be presented to me. To meet those challenges, I want to put together a team that will meet those challenges head on and provide a suitable solution for discussion and implementation. Are you willing to be a member of a team that wants to strengthen our District and face the challenges that are placed before us? Do you want TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND SERVE? If so, please give me a call (916-225-8321) or send me an email ([email protected]) letting me know where your interests lie and how you want to help. I still have vacancies in my cabinet or on a committee. In closing, I would be remiss in not thanking all of you for your continued support in what I am doing to make our District, stronger, better connected and in tune with our managing headquarters, Lion Club International (LCI). I would encourage everyone to just “Ask One” to strengthen our numbers and to be able to get someone else’s “fresh” idea’s on our fundraisers or club projects. Let’s let LCI know that District 4C-5 is alive and will strive to be even better in 2015. Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year!!

Sustainable Service Through Lionism
Kumar Kalagara
“The value of a man resides in what he gives and NOT in what he is capable of receiving.” Albert Einstein
Give : to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation. Someone helped you, now you’re going to look for someone else to help. Be Careful. All this giving stuff is addictive and fun! Ever notice the excitement of Holidays that fills you when you plan to buy a special gift for someone and you can’t wait until they open it? And when they open it they are so excited and thankful. Remember that feeling? That’s what I am are talking about! What if you used your life to do just that – often. Below are few simple suggestions for passing the Giving on. 1. First you have to decide to give back to someone. Even if it’s only a little of your time or money. Just do what you can. This giving stuff is fun! Once you experience the joy and fun of giving you will probably be hooked and begin to live a giving lifestyle. If you want adopt this enjoyable lifestyle read on. Living the Giving Lifestyle Try this…decide that you want to become more of a giving person.
Determine each week / month how much you are going to give away. Next look for someone to give to. You will find your paths will connect with someone in need. You can give cash or a gift or food or your time and talents. You decide what is best for the situation. Here are a few suggestions on how to give.
First try to give in secret.
If you decided to give a gift, wrap it beautifully and leave it when the person is not around. Sometimes this can be done in person, depending on the situation.
After you practice giving again and again… more seems to just come back to you. It’s a weird and strange thing but it happens. This is a simple concept. The toughest part is beginning the lifestyle. I promise… it will change your perspective on life!

District Bulletin Contest
Attention District Newsletter and Bulletin Editors
As we plan the District 4-C5 convention in May we have decided to enhance part of our annual San Ramon gathering to include attendee judging of the newsletter and bulletin submissions. We feel this will give more than a few of our attending members their first opportunity to see all of the competing club newsletters and bulletins in one place. Convention registrants will cast their votes for the submissions they see as #1, 2 and 3 based on overall display and relevance to Lionism and local community. Our goal to unfetter club editors from the point system as shown on pages 108-109 of the 2014-15 Directory and to encourage editors to be as creative, unique and exciting as is possible. A secondary goal is to display the club publications as an important part of the district convention. To further simplify the 2015 contest, (and to conserve on club paper and ink use) editors of weekly, semi-monthly and monthly newsletters and bulletins may submit only one printed and stapled copy of any month including July, 2014 through April, 2015 to participate in the contest. Send the printed copy to this address: Editor , 115 Austin Drive, Folsom, CA 95630. Please submit your entries no later than May 5th, 2015. Thank you for your cooperation. 2VDG Kumar Kalagara District 4-C5 Bulletin Contest Chair

From the Kids of Beale AFB
Picture a thousand children yelling Santa, Santa ,Santa!!!. That picture came to life at Beale Air Force Base on December 13, 2014. Santa finally arrived at 11 am in an appropriate style for an Air Force facility, in a U2- plane. PCC Sue and PDG Bob Olin attended the Beale Air Force Base Christmas Party along with Jim Stocker from the Lincoln Hills Senior Softball League.
Santa’s arrival was preceded by the Grinch who came in on a siren blaring, emergency light flashing fire engine. Within a few minutes came an MS 33 turbo prop plane with Santa’s elf’s as passengers. Im-mediately after exiting the plane, they searched for the Grinch so they could chase him away and make the area safe for Santa to arrive.
Everyone put in their ear plugs in anticipation of Santa coming in on a noisy U2 plane. “There it is coming around the corner “said a child ex-citingly. “Here comes Santa, lift me up on your shoulders dad so I can see Santa” added another young onlooker.
A few seconds later, Santa is standing up in the cockpit of the plane and waving to his audience. Climbing down the stairs he continued to wave to the happy children as he walks toward the cheering crowd. Santa begins to pick up children for a picture session.by their parents. He continues to his place of honor, a Santa chair on the decorated stage, to listen to the wishes of the children now waiting in line. Each child sits on his lap and tells their story.
Before Santa arrived, wrapped gifts were given to the children who gleefully open them with cheers of “look what I got”. Lines were also forming for hot dogs, cookies, popcorn, and lemon aid or hot choco-late... To shake all the food up, there were three bounce houses to entertain many of the children. Face painting and craft s were also used to interest the participants.
We met with the base commander, Colonel Douglas Lee and his wife Dawn, for a special thank you to the Lions of District 5-C5 and the Lincoln Hills Senior Softball League for their participation in providing some of the gifts for the Beale Air Force Base “Kids”. A total of 500 toys were deliv-ered to the base.
So a special thank you to all the Lions who provided a gift at our cabinet meetings. It is a way for us to give thanks to our military for their service. And what can be more special and rewarding than to honor their chil-dren with a gift.
So let’s do even more next year for our military. Thank you Lions and the “Kids” of Beale thank you.

Dear 4-C5 Lions,
Hope you are enjoying the new format of our district bulletin (Pride). It is our intention to dedicate sections for Clubs, Zones, Regions and projects. Every month pride will show case at least one from each category.
Pride will also cover news about Lions across the globe. Please take advantage of the
new format and contribute. The size of the Pride is not going be restricted as it is primarily redesigned for electronic distribution. It will be available on our district website (www.district4c5.org) on 1st day of the month and through district email blast. Clubs are encouraged to help the Lions who do not have access to electronic media.
Looking forward to your continued readership.
