Getty Images is the world’s largest provider of digital media content including still images, video, and music files.

Each year, the company ingests millions of new digital media assets. To ensure its customers can find the images they want, it’s imperative that high-quality metadata is assigned to each asset.

Exceptional search data is required for customers to find the images they want out of the millions of assets available right at their fingertips. To accomplish this, Getty Images partnered with Samasource to develop a customized solution to help manage Getty’s heavy volume of inbound assets in a quality manner.

IMAGE SERVICES: IMAGE ANNOTATION

Through Samasource’s Microwork model, assets were distributed to workers who were asked to identify whether a certain person was included in the photo or not. The team then categorized the images in the system to make it easy for customers to find them.

In working with Samasource, Getty Images was not only able to meet its business requirements but also appreciated the focus on impact sourcing. To complete the project for Getty Images, Samasource trained a team of workers living in northern Uganda where the youth unemployment rate hovers at 60%. If not for this opportunity, locals would have no way to use their skills to earn a living wage.

eBay's mission is to be the world’s favorite destination for discovering great value and unique selection.

The company provides over 800 million live listings to its community of 157 million active buyers -- and is deeply committed to creating a commerce experience that is enabled by people, powered by technology, and open to everyone.

Images are key to delivering a high-quality user experience and while eBay's 25 million sellers are encouraged to provide accurate description of the items they're selling, there are often issues with size, color, format, brand, and other relevant information. Between 2011-2013, eBay partnered with Samasource to create a set of criteria and workflow for high-qulity image optimization and tasked over 100 Samasource agents baed in Kenya and Uganda to curate, optimize and annotate images.

IMAGE SERVICES: IMAGE OPTIMIZATION

Images were tagged with the 'right' metadata and those data sets were then used to train Ebay's search algorithms. Although such projects are often extremely subjective and could have multiple 'right' choices, Samasource overcame that challenge by establishing rigorous feedback and training mechanism across its offshore agent teams to ensure consistency in the metadata applied to the images.

eBay's partnership with Samasource has resulted in visible enhancements in image quality therefore improving the shopping experience for its community worldwide.

What’s more, this project provided work for over 100 Samasource agents -- these are marginalized yet talented women and youth in Kenya and Uganda for whom access to dignified work represents a path out of poverty.

@WalmartLabs was created to meet the needs of Walmart customers wherever they are — shopping in a store, browsing Walmart web site, or doing research on their mobile devices. Each week, more than 245 million customers visit Walmart's 10,900 stores and 10 web sites worldwide.

Samasource has been working with WalmartLabs for 3+ years now. First supporting Walmart's eCommerce efforts and more recently, entering into machine learning.

Walmart created an algorithm to automatically predict the "gender" associated with products listed on their website however the output was extremely inaccurate. Even products that had gender specific words in the title like "Nike Air Women's tennis shoes" would not be tagged as being for "Women". Walmart partnered with Samasource to create data sets for training the algorithm.

MACHINE LEARNING

Samasource manually QAed 115,522 products - this included checking to see if the algorithm had correctly predicted the gender, and if not, assigned the correct gender.

At the start, the algorithm's accuracy was around 59% and after using Samasource data sets to train the algorithm, WalmartLabs engineers were able to increase the algorithm accuracy to 93%.

Walmart's partnership with Samasource has resulted in visible enhancements in product descriptions therefore improving the shopping and purchasing experience of its extensive portfolio of products.

A product team at Microsoft was spending approximately x% of their productive time on creating data sets to train algorithms for their new product.

This resulted in a significant impact on productivity and quality of the experience.

Samasource established an offshore team of agents to perform tasks like plotting of points, polygon outlining, and boxing of objects in images. Microsoft product team used the data set to train their computer vision algorithms. During peak periods, Samasource agents processed 100K+ images per month with quality SLAs at 95-99.9% accuracy.

What’s more, this project provided work for 200 Samasource agents — these are marginalized yet talented women and youth in countries like Kenya and Uganda for whom access to dignified work represents a path out of poverty.
