INDUSTRIAL COMMERCIAL
EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING LTD.
Originally founded as Bullocks Manufacturing during the post-war residential
housing boom, I.C.E. Manufacturing was recognized for innovation and
excellence early in our history. After the company established a reputation for
designing, manufacturing and installing natural gas conversion burners for oil
and coal-fired furnaces, founder Don Bullocks returned from an ASHRAE trade
show with a natural gas line burner. Inspired, he set out to manufacture the first
direct-fired makeup air unit in his home country of Canada.
Today, the natural gas revolution continues with I.C.E. Manufacturing at the
forefront of the commercial direct-fired industry. Don had the vision long before
many others by designing a product that has outlived his legend. Our BMA
Series is named for him (Bullocks Makeup Air). This forward thinking has carried
on through such advanced products as the HTDM, the gas valve technology
available on the BMA, and the industrial-quality GIDM product line.
All of our products have withstood the test of time. Many new products are on
the horizon to meet the ever-increasing concern over energy costs, consumption
and impact on our environment. We are building on our heritage to bring
exceptional gas-fired products to market.
I.C.E. is committed to success – the success of our customers and our
employees. To us, success is driven by loyalty that comes from service, quality
and innovation. With our vast experience in the HVAC industry, we continue to
listen to and understand the needs of our customers. And we trust we will be
able to serve you well into the future.

How To
- Determine whether the unit will be for heating and cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, or any combination of the above. For cooling and humidifying visit www.ice-ww.com for design guide.
- Determine the maximum air volume requirement. this is generally 10% greater than the maximum air volume of the exhaust system for the space. this will allow the room to be positively pressurized. however, in some makeup systems this may be reversed in order to keep the space negatively pressurized, keeping odors, toxins, etc. confined to the conditioned space.
- once this is known, refer to the iMa Series performance Specifications to choose the model that can deliver this amount.
- the corresponding horse power (hp) can then be taken from the iMa performance Specification chart, given the external static pressure (eSp” Wc).note: add the necessary accessory pressure drop(s) to the eSp. Given the blower hp and line voltage, determine the running Motor amperage, inrush Motor amperage and Full load amps (Fla).
- knowing the unit Model number and MBh capacity the corresponding gas connection size can be taken from the iMa Series Specification table.
- Given the entering and leaving dry bulb temperatures or temperature rise, the equation below can also be used to calculate the required MBh capacity.
MBh capacity = (cFM x c x (lat-eat))/1000 MBh capacity: Btuh/1000 (British thermal units per hour). cFM: cubic Feet per minute of air. c: Gas constant of 1.188 based on an air density at 75 deg. F eat: entering air dry bulb temperature ( deg. F) lat: leaving air dry bulb temperature (deg. F)
Example
a room is exhausting 8000 cFM. the desired room temperature is 70 deg. F. the winter design condition for the area is -10 deg. F. the unit chosen is to be an outdoor Direct-FireD unit whose discharge is downwards. the eSp is 0.25” W.c. the line voltage to the unit is 600/3/60. Gas connection is on the right hand side.
Determine:
1. the supply air capacity required.
2. Which unit is capable of delivering the required supply air volume, while not exceeding a Bhp of 4.00. note: Because it is an outdoor unit you will require an inlet louver or hood and filter section. For this example, we will use an inlet hood with filters.
3. running Motor amperage.
4. the MBh capacity and corresponding gas connection size required.
5. unit configuration.
Selection
1. Since the exhaust air volume is 8000 cFM, the supply air capacity should be the same if no pressurization requirements were specified. therefore, the supply air capacity is 8000 cFM.
2. referring to the iMa performance Specification table, the iMa 118 and iMa 120 are capable of delivering the required 8000 cFM of supply air. the unit must have a maximum of 4.00 hp when the static pressures of the unit and eSp are added together and applied to the table.
therefore: eSp= 0.25” W.c. (Given) inlet hood w/filters = 0.4” W.c. 0.25+0.4= tSp 0.65= tSp use 0.75” W.c. on the chart to be conservative. the corresponding hp’s at 0.75” W.c. iMa118 . . . . . . . .5 hp IMA120 . . . . . . . .3 HP
the units that can be used are the iMa118 and the iMa120.
3. the running Motor amperage for a 5 hp motor at 600/3/60 is 5.50 amps .
4. the MBh input required for an eat of -10 deg. F and a lat of 70 deg. F (80 deg. F rise) is 760 MBh.
MBh = (cFM x 1.188 (lat - eat)) / 1000 MBh = (8000 x 1.188 (70-(-10)))/1000 = 760 MBh
the corresponding gas connection size required is 1 inch.
5. the unit configuration is hrB for a horizontal right hand unit with a bottom discharge.
Why Direct-Fired Makeup Air?Inexpensive to Operate Direct gas firing is 100% effective. in the majority of gas fired appliances which utilize heat exchanging devices approximately 20%, and usually more of the thermal content of the fuel is lost in vented flue gases as well as up to an additional 10-15% lost in piping or ducting. With direct firing, 100% of the fuel’s energy is absorbed by the makeup air.
Inexpensive to Install and Maintain only a gas line to the burner and an electrical hook-up to the air blower motor and controls are required. the burner does not require an air gas premixer, consequently, installation and maintenance are considerably simpler and more economical.
Completely Safe combustion is electronically supervised to provide shut down in the event of flame failure. an adequate supply of circulating air is ensured by an air velocity interlock switch or the burner is automatically shut down. excessive temperatures are guarded against by a manual reset high limit switch. the burner produces no harmful concentrations of carbon monoxide in the air stream. the nozzle design eliminates mechanical devices for mixing and controlling. no adjustment is required; it is impossible to maladjust.
Makeup Air Application a Direct-FireD Makeup air unit is a combination of elements designed to condition fresh air introduced into the unit. this air is then blown into the occupied or unoccupied space replacing the air that is exhausted, through powered exhaust fans.
Makeup air units may, therefore be required to heat, ventilate, cool, humidify, dehumidify, pressurize, and filter the air blown into the space (supply air). the supply airflow will be either fixed or variable, which can respond directly to different exhaust flow rates in order to achieve room pressurization control.
pressurization of a space eliminates:
- exhaust systems from exhausting incorrect air volumes - building perimeters being cold in the winter due to high infiltration - drafts at exterior doors - doors from being hard to open from the outside - uneven temperature conditions in the building space - gravity vented gas appliances from back venting

Selection for 80/20 Units (available in uS only)
the iMa series unit can be used as a combination makeup air and heating unit. a minimum of 20% fresh air must be provided at all times and the balance (80%) is a combination of fresh and return air. With the dampers fixed for 80% recirculation the iMa series unit functions as a space heater.

IM Series Standard Temperature Control OptionsBuilding makeup air systems maintain a constant supply air temperature to the space using a discharge temperature controller. the burner output is modulated over a wide range to compensate for fluctuations in the incoming ambient air temperature. a gas valve regulates output according to the demand sensed by a discharge air sensor. the fan and heat system functions are typically controlled by a remote panel with a system and summer/winter switch or a building management system.
Discharge Air Temperature Control used predominantly for makeup air applications to maintain supply air at a constant temperature. the burner firing rate modulates in response to a discharge air controller.
A) Electronic Control the electronic modulating system consists of a discharge sensor, electronic amplifier and valve, which respond instantaneously to small fluctuations in temperature. the system is capable of close temperature control over a wide range. included with the system is a remote temperature selector; range 55 to 90 degrees F. the system is also available with leD temperature indication, as an available option.
Discharge Air Temperature Control With Room Override commonly used in applications requiring maintenance of space temperatures as well as a constant discharge temperature. typical applications include plants and kitchens, which may require a morning warm-up. the override feature provides auxiliary heat to a space as required and sensed by a room thermostat.
A) Electronic Control the electronic modulating system as described above, in addition to the rtS (remote temperature Sensor) is furnished with a space thermostat. if the thermostat setting is not satisfied, the discharge temperature will be increased until the thermostat is satisfied. the degree of override can be adjusted at the rtS. an outdoor reset thermostat is also an available option.
Space Temperature Control used primarily for space heating applications, i.e. maintaining the space temperature at a certain level. this is accomplished primarily by using a space thermostat.
A) Electronic Control the burner firing rate is modulated in response to an amplified signal from a room-mounted thermostat. the discharge temperature is maintained within preset maximum and minimum settings on the amplifier. the control package includes a thermostat with a temperature selector mounted either on the remote panel or in the space.
B) Electronic Control - Door Heater Applications the electronic modulating door heater system is similar to the standard makeup air system, with an added feature; adjustable high temperature override limit. activated by a door switch, the discharge temperature is indexed automatically to a higher setpoint compensating for the increased heat loss, the result of an open door.
Miscellaneous Control OptionsFreeze Protection Specified to protect against untempered air entering the space. the freeze thermostat, also known as an auto low limit, is located in the discharge air and is wired in parallel with a time delay relay. in the event that the discharge air temperature is not above the freeze thermostat setting, within a preset time during start-up and under normal operation the unit will shut down.
Inlet Air Controller Features an adjustable thermostat, which monitors outdoor air temperatures. When the temperature exceeds the setting of the thermostat, the burner will not operate even when the unit is in the winter mode.
Night Setback (Available in US only) this feature is available as an option on all temperature control systems. By lowering the discharge air temperature requirements during unoccupied periods the owner can realize operating economies and still provide heat to the space as required. During the occupied cycle, the unit will be brought on though an interlock, timeclock or switch. During the unoccupied period the timeclock provided, switches the system control to a single stage thermostat set at the desired unoccupied temperature. the unit will then be started intermittently to provide heat to maintain the space at the unoccupied temperature setpoint.
Maxitrol DFM Series provides complete anSi burner 80/20 capacity control. available with 7-Day night set back control. it is also compatible with building management control systems.
