NOMENCLATURE PROPOSALSAPPROVED IN MARCH 2018

IMA 17-H Spinel supergroupProposal 17-H on the classification of the spinelsupergroup is accepted. The fifty-three minerals of thespinel supergroup are divided into three groups on thebasis of dominant X anion: O2– (oxyspinel), S2–

(thiospinel), and Se2– (seleniospinel). Each group isdivided into subgroups according to the dominantvalence and then the dominant constituent (orheterovalent-pair of constituents) represented by theletter B in the formula AB2X4. The oxyspinel group canbe divided into spinel subgroup 2-3 (A2þB3þ

2 O4) andulvöspinel subgroup 4-2 (A4þB2þ

2 O4), thiospinel groupinto carrollite subgroup 1-3.5 (A1þB3:5þ

2 S4) andlinnaeite subgroup 2-3 (A2þB3þ

2 S4), and the seleno-spinel group into bornhardtite subgroup 2-3(A2þB3þ

2 Se4) and tyrrellite. Once the subgroup isestablished by the valence of B and the dominant B-cation, then the mineral species is identified by thedominant A-cation. There are thirty species in theoxyspinel group, twenty in the thiospinel group andthree in the seleniospinel group.

IMA 17-I Revised end-member formula for flurliteProposal 17-I is accepted. A re-evaluation of the siteoccupancies in flurlite, using BVS calculations, resulted in a change in the dominant cation in theM1 site from Mn2þ to Zn. Consequently, the end-member formula for flurlite becomes[5]Zn[6]Zn3

[6]Fe3þ(PO4)3(OH)2(H2O)7 · 2H2O.

IMA 18-A Redefinition of eztliteProposal 18-A is accepted, and the formula for eztlite isredefined, according to new analytical results. Thepreviously accepted formula, published by SidneyWilliams in 1982, was Fe3þ6 Pb2þ2 (Te4+O3)3(Te

6+O6)(OH)10 · nH2O, with n ≈ 8. This formula is nowredefined to Pb2þ2 Fe3þ3 (Te4+O3)3(SO4)O2Cl.

Nepheline revised chemical formulaIn the IMA List of Minerals the ideal chemicalformulae of kalsilite and nepheline are given asKAlSiO4 and NaAlSiO4, respectively. Whereas theformula of kalsilite is correct, nepheline must containsome amount of potassium substituting for sodium. Both kalsilite and nepheline are hexagonal, space

group P63. In kalsilite, which has a smaller unit cell, allcavities which host alkali cations have a hexagonaloutline and are occupied by potassium; in nepheline, due to the doubling of the a parameter, there are 3cavities with oval outline and 1 cavity with hexagonaloutline: the former are occupied by sodium, the latterby potassium. Accordingly, the chemical formula ofnepheline should be Na3K(Al4Si4O16). All knownchemical analyses of nepheline, including those ofnepheline from the type locality (Monte Somma Vesuvius area, Italy) match the above formula. Therefore potassium is an essential constituent ofnepheline and it should appear in the chemical formulaof the mineral. This is an executive decision taken bythe officers of the IMA CNMNC.
