Not Joining In
• Is it a one off or regular occurrence?• Encourage the YP to try the activity• Remind them they will get to do something
they like later• Are they frightened of the activity?
Shouting and Swearing
• Is it a one off or regular occurrence?• Is there an obvious cause?• Are they justified in their feelings?
Not Following Instructions
• Is there an underlying issue?• Were the instructions understood?• Were the instructions reasonable?• Is there a safety issue?• Do they understand the WHY behind the
instructions?

• Quite often people that exhibit challenging behaviour at home or school don’t at scouts– Why?– Because they love the programme

• Problems at school– Bullies– Exam Pressures– Friends
• Problems at Home– Illness– Parents Splitting Up– Bereavement
When YP Talk
• Refer to your orange card• Always ensure that if you have a private
conversation someone can see you• Never promise to keep secrets• If in doubt, document what you have been
told, don’t judge, comment or try to give advice – pass on the information to your section leader
