Illinois Coalition for Educating At-Risk Youth
is pleased to present
March 6 and 7, 2014
Marriot Hotel and Conference Center,
Bloomington, Illinois
Ashleigh Gregge was the winner of the 2013 ICEARY student t-shirt design contest. Her
sentiment of how at-risk youth achieve was a perfect fit for the conference cover design.
Ashleigh is exactly right - every piece has its own special place. Our students have a
special place where they can learn, grow and find success they may not have found
anywhere else. Whether that place is an RSSP Safe School, TAOEP Alternative School,
truancy program or other program, our at-risk youth are finding success. That success is
all thanks to the dedicated individuals such as yourself. As ICEARY President, I commend
each of you for your efforts, time and dedication. It is my hope that as ICEARY members,
ICEARY continues to provide the tools and support you need to help our at-risk students
find their special place.

Harold Sweeney, ROE #4; Heather Sweeney, Student
What do you do when ADD medications bring no improvement or even make things
worse for the student? Do you really have ADD? Come share the story of one student who
went through this situation to have academic success. You will definitely learn some
things not to say to students and parents, but should leave with the knowledge you may
be the one to make a difference in the life of a student who needlessly struggles.

Compassion Fatigue and Stress Management Tim Furnas, Kishwaukee College
As educators, we are great at dedicating our lives to benefit all students, but how much effort
do we give to taking care of ourselves? Compassion fatigue is a real-life situation that many
teachers, administrators, and school counselors fall victim to during their careers. This
session explores the symptoms and strategies to effectively manage compassion fatigue and
stress.

Masters of (Positive) Manipulation Emily Diebold, J. Sterling Morton High School District, Hillside, IL
Jackie Levin, Leyden High School District #212, Northlake, IL
If you stop and think about it, all day long we try to make conditions turn out the way we would
like. How do we teach our kids to create circumstances that they would like, with people and
situations that they encounter? Our students use the powers of manipulation in everyday life; they
just haven’t figured out how to positively and successfully use these skills with teachers/
administrators/adults. TAPESTRY Advocates attempt to show our students how to work within the
bigger system that is school, and eventually life outside of school as a graduate. This presentation
will explore what we do on a daily basis, how we try and model our behaviors to guide our students
through school life. We will present what has worked and what has continued to be a struggle for
the program. Tweet your questions before, during and after the presentation to @asktapestry.

101 strategies… but we will cover tons! After this session your students will come in and be
