IL TEMPO

Welcome to Il Tempo (The Times), the Newsletter of the Barony of Ponte Alto, one of the northern baronies in the Kingdom of Atlantia.

Il Tempo strives to be an informative read that you look forward to. To this end, we are al-ways appreciative of any contributions to it, perhaps an article of a project you are working on or are interested in, how to make/play a period game, your experience at an event, how/what to prepare for a day trip, a recipe/piece of garb that you've made, documentation on an item you've competed - a how to on documentation, a few words on a historical person/event, photos, a book review, some-thing to share with a newcomer - perhaps a short autobiography of your persona or how you came to figure out your persona.

The list can go on for ages - only limited by the speed at which our hands can write out what our minds can think of.

Come, share with us adventures in the great Barony of Ponte Alto, in the grand Kingdom of Atlantia, in this - the current Middle Ages!

P A G E 4 Persona Pentathlon/Triathlon Kingdom Arts & Sciences Festival

The competition is only 31/2 months away on February 2, 2013… plenty of time to plan! Mistress Branwen is coordinating the event this year. For adults, there is the Pentathlon. In this competition, each partici-pant must make 5 items pertaining to 1 persona (for example, 10th century Kievan Rus unmarried peasant woman). This does not have to be your persona. The 5 items must fit into at least 3 of the different categories listed in the rules. That means you can have 2 repeated categories. If one of your items is a research paper, I must receive it no later than January 2, 2013 (1 month prior to the event) in order to give the judges time to carefully read your work. For children (17 and under), we have the Triathlon. The same rules apply as for the adults except that you only have to make 3 items, and each one must fit into a different category. This is a great learning ex-perience, a fun competition, and the prize is terrific! As always, the winner of each competition will receive a basket full of wonderful things donated by our Kingdom’s Order of the Laurel. To get started, send your SCA name, mundane name, your local group, and a list of your items by 18 January 2013 so that Mistress Branwen can ensure she has the appropriate judges and forms at the event. The link to all the rule and categories is: http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/forms.htm. If you have any questions, please contact Mistress Bran-wen at [email protected]. Information taken from email to the Atlantian Announcements mailing list on October 21, 2012.

Baronial Business Meeting Minutes October 28, 2012 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 7426 Idylwood Road Attendance: 13 Falls Church, VA Start: 6:03 p.m. Officer Reports Seneschal—Bob Capozello Unevent is in Richmond/Barony of Caer Maer in December. Officers are encour-aged to attend; please appoint someone if you cannot make it. Treasurer—Daniel Bensing We had a great event in Chalice! The account balance is $8,406.21; does not in-clude items to be paid this evening for Love and Beauty. Looked into a space at Holiday Faire; the cost is $10.00 for a 10-by-10 space. We can discuss during Old Business. Knight Marshal—Gilbert Gordon, absent No report. Rapier Marshal—Jeff Williams Rapier continues. Archery Marshal—Mike Emrich, absent Mike will be stepping down as Archery Marshal; now that Nicholas (Naran) is war-ranted, he will step up. Minister of Arts & Sciences—Kristen Moran There were 7 entries in the A&S competition at Chalice and 9 bardic entries. Rhonwen won. There were so many nice pieces entered. If you do A&S, tell me! Chatelaine—Christine Menton At the meeting on Friday, we had 4 new people and 2 new-ish people (already SCA members). November’s meeting will be at Elisande’s home; need hosts for January and February. Jennie is moving toward getting her formal training finished so she can step up as Chatelaine. Herald—Matt Torsky, absent No report. Chronicler—Theresa Crean Passing around the Regnum. Please review and let me know any corrections. On the Baronial website, there’s a problem with the automatic code so some peo-ple’s SCA titles are listed incorrectly.

(continued on next page)

P A G E 9 Web Minister—Rachel Storey Working on sorting out the glitch in the code for the titles in the Regnum. Minister of the Lists—Kari Dalton, absent There was a good number of rapier and archery participants at Chalice, plus lots of youth combat. Minister of Minors—Eliisa Harman, absent We had 16 children sign in for Children’s Activities at Chalice. They made Bullae (necklaces with a good luck charm talisman inside) and Greek masks, and learned how to tie togas/himations. A good time was had by all. Thanks to Nihani, Marie-Therese, and Hammus for their help making everything run smoothly. The parade before Court was a bit crazy but fun nonetheless. Several Pontoon children also provided some impromptu entertainment by danc-ing during Feast. Baron and Baroness—Stephen and Liza Cicirelli Reviewed recent events. At Coronation, Liza passed a gift basket onto Their Maj-esties. At WOW, the war was supposed to be between North and South, but no one approached the Barony about being on “their side”. Same thing happened to Highland Foorde, so we had a bit of fun with that. Our side won! Thank you to everyone who helped at Chalice. We were pulled in so many ways, so we thank you for pulling up the slack. There were lots of newcomers there! Liza came home with a box of donated garb—we’ll discuss in Old Business. We did get a $7.00 cash donation for a piece of garb that someone took from Gold Key. Reviewed upcoming Baronial Progress.

Events Chalice of the Sun God IX (Oct. 20th) It Rocked! There were 184 paid people with 5 comps on site. We made a profit. Not as many people attended feast as was expected, so next year suggest we plan 60 for feast. The handicap parking signs need to be a bit more visible. We were off site by 8:30! There was a fiasco with the 4H Club that may impact future events at the Fair-grounds They meet the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, so Rachel got the name of the point-of-contact so we can de-conflict (the office that schedules/contracts didn’t let her know that we’d be there). Love & Beauty (Feb. 23rd) Mailed checks and contracts. Will contact the 4H lady. Need to get checks for port-o-johns, ABC license, and ACCEPS after meeting. For feast, Matt may not be able to coordinate; Lisbeth can fill in if necessary. Sara, one of the newcomers, will be Merchant Coordinator. St. Paddy’s Day Blood Bath (Mar. 9th) No report. Fall Crown Tournament (Sept. 2013) Just an FYI: camping is allowed at the Loudon Country Fairgrounds for a 20% sur-charge. But, the water is turned off at some point to prepare for winter, so show-ers would be a problem. Found out that there is additional parking in a field down the road—not far!

(continued on next page)

P A G E 1 0 Old Business

No report on coronets.

Holiday Faire booth. Daniel will reserve and send in the check; need someone to coordinate. Bob motioned that we allot $10; Rachel seconded. We reviewed a plan to sort the garb. Bob, Liza, and Theresa have garment racks we can use; there are 2 folding tables as well. Because of the amount of garb, the motion was revisited to buy 2 spaces so we’d have a 10-by-20 space. Motion passed.

No update on the Arlington Demo. Revisited the monthly A&S night; no update at this time. Scribal Night: Karen Miller is going to help find “guest teachers” to guide anyone who wants to do/learn calligraphy and illumination. More to come on dates, lo-cations, etc. No report on reviving the College of Saint Stephen’s. Liza hasn’t done the radio interview about SCA; will let us know once it’s finished. New Business The next Baronial Business Meeting falls on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. De-cided to move it to the next Friday, December 2nd. We do not have a meeting in December. Tamara will see if the room is available at the church. Cookie Competition was discussed; consensus was that we do it again this year! Tamara will look at dates and a location and let everyone know. Announcements Portraits will be taken at Holiday Faire and Love and Beauty. At the Barony’s 20 Year event, what happened to the spears? If anyone has in-formation, please contact the Baron and Baroness. Adjourned at 6:44 p.m.

You Know You’re in the SCA When… ...garb takes up more room than your clothes in your closet—and it’s in better condition. ...you find yourself in a “People of Walmart” picture—dressed in your garb. ...you watch movies such as Henry V over and over just for the costumes and fighting scenes. ...you use your child’s plastic knights to outline your tactical ideas for the next fighter practice or war.
