room hut to finishthe night before.

A quarter-centurylater, Theodore Toben ofPleasant PIains wouldreminisce about a gin-rummy game conducted atScofield Barracks nearPearl Harbor.

0n that Sunday rnorningof Dec .7 ,L94L, Pfc.Toben,26, and a fellow cook,Pfc. WALTER SCHERER,nowof Syracuse, had fin-lshed making breakfastfor the men and retiredto a confortable one-a game of rummy started

The two cooks shuffled the cards forthe hand that would decide the outcomeof the game.

Suddenly the roar of a divlng planewas heard. Toben and Scherer paid noattention. This was nothlng unusual.

Toben melded three queens and drewanother card. He dld not know thatScherer needed only a 5-spot to Iay downhis entire hand, shout rrRumny!tr and claimthe spol1s.

Just as Scherer was reaching for a card,a ripping rat-tat-tat-tat cut through theIeaden morning air. A machine gun buIletslashed through the roof, plowlng throughthe score card and sending cards flying.

Then it drilled through the inch-thlck card playing table to hit the floorand rlchochet off Tobenrs wa11 locker.ItCryi n I ou t l oud ! rr shout ed Sc herer a she picked himself from the floor. rrThosef Iyers of ours are getting damn careless !'r.

The cooks rushed outside and came face-to-face with a Japanese plane which bankedlike a soaring goose and circled roundthe quadrangle, flacking it with a fusil-lade of bullets.

rrWe ran to a hut t', Toben says, tttopick up our equipment, even though we hadno orders. We got our packs ready.rThe planes returned. Some cut up thefie1d, but we knocked down a few.rr

Tobenrs first feeling was intenseexcitement. It took 24 hours to realize

And no did declare trRummy!tt

A night rewrite man on the now-defunctN.Y. HeraId Tribune told us, years ago, that, as peopl.e grow oIder. they tend moreand more to turn first to the obituaries, knowing that, wi.th growing frequency, they will read of the death of a contem-porary. Although we were relatively youngat the time, we have been doing it eversince.

These days, with the first swallow ofstrong coffee jarring us into a full con-ciousness, we open our morning paper.

One day, the first thing we saw^was aheadline: ?rCol . GEORGE KREIGH M00DY,Retired Army 0fficer, Deadrr.

We stop to think. We begin to recall. We first renember George, or Kreigh as

his intimates best knew him, as toweringabove so many others in the Division. Weknew him on the island of Kyushu in thedays of '47 and ,48. We remember too thatthe happy associations of those occupatlondays didnrt end with departure from Nippon;they carried on.

We remember Kreigh, and happy family,in Boston where he was PMSET at BostonUnlversity. llle remember that same wonder-fu1 family as our house guests here athome, We remember the correspondence, those little ties that bind, that helpyou never quite to lose full touch withones you admire and respect and love.

In the world of army, some friendshipstend to be casual, short lived, but yetpermanent. We hear about one another, and when we meet, we are met with an easyintlmacy. Sometimes we work together andthen we separate, sometimes forever, butsomehow never again apart.

We read again the last line of hisobituary: rrCol. Moody Ieaves as survivors, his wife, Anne, and his chitdren, Stephen,Sue Anne, Carolyn and Philip'r.

Accurate, but not guite true. Kreighleaves many survivors: those of us whosepaths crossed his, and above all, thethousands of Division who served wlth him. They all remember. We remember partlcu-larly as when, in the darkest hour of ourIife, the Ioyalty and love of George -and Anne - Moody, shone through as abeacon. To Anne and her precious four gothe heartfelt condolences of every manwho ever stood shoulder with George KreighMoody and wearing the Taro Leaf. Andherers to George, rt11 we meet again -aloha!
