Compared to the previous survey (1998), it decreased by 31 enterprises which showed a decrease of 10.3% compared to the previous survey. In addition, of 271 enterprises, those conducting film production business numbered 118 (composition ratio of 43.5% of the total), those conducting film distribution business numbered 70 (25.8% id.) and those conducting video sales business numbered 191 (70.5% id.). 1) By capital size When viewing the number of enterprises by capital size, the small-and medium-sized enterprises with “less than ¥50 million” numbered 200 (composition ratio of 73.8%), accounting for a little over 70% of the total. In addition, of 271 enterprises, those conducting film production business numbered 118 (composition ratio of 43.5% of the total), those conducting film distribution business numbered 70 (25.8% id.) and those conducting video sales business numbered 191 (70.5% id.). 1) By capital size

When observing the number of enterprises by employment scale, enterprises with “1 to 9 persons engaged ” numbered 136 (composition ratio of 50.2%), those with “10 to 49 persons engaged” numbered 98 (36.2% id.), those with “50 to 99 persons engaged” numbered 21 (7.7% id.) and those with “over 100 persons engaged” marked 16 (5.9% id.).

1) By gender When observing the number of persons engaged by gender, “males” numbered 5,306 (composition ratio of

73.5%) and “females” totaled 1,909 (26.5% id.), so the male ratio was higher, thus, in this survey, the male ratio was the highest in 8 business categories (Note) of the leisure-related industry.

(Note) Regarding business categories subject to the leisure-related industry in this survey, refer to the “Remarks on the Survey of Selected Service Industries”.

2) By type of employment

When viewing the number of persons engaged by type of employment, “full-timers” numbered 5,396 (composition ratio of 74.8%), “part-timers” totaled 634 (8.8% id.), thus, regular employees marked 6,030, accounting for the majority of the total. “Solo proprietors, un-paid family workers or paid executives” numbered 511 (7.1%), “temporary employees” marked 462 (6.4% id.) and “persons temporarily transferred and dispatched (accepted)” numbered 212 (2.9% id.). 3) By department

When observing the number of employees by department, the “production” department accounted for 36.6%, followed by the “management and sales” department (29.2% id.), the “other” department (11.2%), the “advertising” department (8.0% id.), the “planning” department (6.9% id.) and the “distribution department” (5.2% id.). 3. Annual sales

The annual sales of the film production and distribution, and video sales in 2001 marked ¥533.2 billion, an increase by 5.7% compared to the previous survey (1998). Of those, the “film distribution business” totaled ¥122.6 billion (composition ratio of 23.0%), the “film production business” marked ¥104.8 billion (19.6% id.) and the “video sales business” marked ¥305.8 billion (57.3% id.). Compared from the previous survey, the sales of the “film production business” sharply increased by 1.6 times, whereas, those of the “film distribution business” and “video sales business” dropped. Income of distribution mainly within Japan or income of TV film production and income of video copyrights greatly contributed to the sharp increase in the “film production business”

The annual sales per enterprise marked ¥1.9761 billion, which showed an increase of 17.7% from the previous survey, whereas, the annual sales per employee marked ¥73.9 million.

When viewing the annual sales per enterprise by employment scale, enterprises with “over 100 persons engaged” marked ¥17.79787 billion, which was overwhelmingly high, followed by those with “50 to 99 persons engaged” marked ¥4.57153 billion and those with “10 to 49 persons engaged” marked ¥1.35 billion, thus, the annual sales per enterprise became higher as the employment scale became larger.

In a similar manner, when observing the annual sales per persons engaged, the sales were the highest at enterprises with “over 100 persons engaged” marked ¥96.3 million, whereas, those at enterprises with “1 to 9 persons engaged” marked ¥39.08 million, which remained approximately 40% of those at enterprises with “over 100 persons engaged”.

1) Film production business

The annual sales in the film production business marked ¥122.6 billion, which showed a sharp increase by 59.0% compared to the previous survey. When observing its breakdown, the “film distribution revenue” marked ¥38.9 billion (composition ratio of 31.7%), the “consigned production revenue” marked ¥19.9 billion (16.3% id.), the “TV broadcasting right revenue” marked ¥16.9 billion (13.8% id.), the “Video copyright revenue” marked ¥16 billion (13.0% id.) and the “TV movie production revenue” totaled ¥13.9 billion (11.3% id.).

Compared to the previous survey, the “film distribution revenue” increased by 3 times from the previous survey due to an increase in animation films recorded the highest in the movie history through the number of customers mobilized. In addition, the “TV movie production revenue” also increased by 2.5 times id., due to an increase in 2-hour wide dramas at national and regional stations and late-night dramas, and the “Video copyright revenue” also increased by 3 times id., due to an increase in the number of video sales mainly in animation films and the diffusion of DVDs. 2) Film distribution business

The annual sales in the film distribution business marked ¥104.8 billion, a decrease by 3.0% compared to the previous survey. When viewing its breakdown, the” film distribution revenue” marked ¥72 billion (composition ratio of 68.7%), accounting for approximately 70% of the total, followed by the “income of screening right on TV” marked ¥14.4 billion (13.8% id.) and the “Video copyright revenue” marked ¥12.2 billion (11.7% id.).

Compared from the previous time, the main-force “film distribution revenue” slightly decreased by 0.5%

compared to the previous survey. As the reason for this, despite that income sharply increased by 66.0% in “Japanese” films recorded the big hit in animation works, the “Foreign” films which established the performing record in those days at the time of the previous survey drastically decreased by 23.8% id., due to an reaction of the masterpieces or a small number of hit works in this survey. On the other hand, both “Video copyright revenue” and “TV broadcasting right revenue” increased with a number of two figures in line with an expansion in the number of films sold or filming opportunities.

When observing its breakdown, the “video sales revenue” marked ¥288.2 billion (composition ratio of 94.2%), accounting for the majority of the total video sales business, in addition, the “consigned production revenue” marked ¥5.2 billion (1.7% id.), the “Video copyright revenue” showed ¥3 billion (1.0% id.) and the “TV broadcasting right revenue” marked ¥2.1 billion (0.7% id.). Incidentally, when viewing the breakdown of the “video sales income”, the income was the highest in “Foreign” films marked ¥100,5 billion (composition ratio of 34.9% in the video sales income), followed by the “Japanese” films showed ¥65.2 billion (22.6% id.) and the “TV programs” marked ¥38.5 billion (13.4% id.).

Compared to the previous time, only the main-force “video sales revenue” increased by 2.3% compared to the previous survey. As the reason for this, although the “other” decreased (down 11.8% id.) due to a decrease in the number of the production of original videos such as dramas for adults or karaoke, the “Japanese” films

increased by 18.3% id., the “Foreign” movies also increased by 3.2% id., and the “TV programs” increased by 12.9% id., due to the diffusion of DVDs. 4. Number of film products, film prints distributed and video sales

The number of film products in 2001 was 4,904, an increase by 11.4% compared to the previous survey (1998), the number of film prints distributed marked 11,793 (up 81.8% compared to the previous survey) and the annual number of video sales was 64,408548 million (up 15.1% id.), thus the either number increased. The reason behind this is regarded to be (i) an increase in the number of new movie theaters (ii) screening and introduction so minor movies such as Indies’ movies (iii) extension of film range or enhancement of desire to appreciation due to the development of filming technology such as computer animation, (iv) the diffusion of DVDs installing advantages and lowering of prices and (v) the fashion and diversification of TV drams.

Incidentally, the number of imported films in 2001 marked 187 (down 50.5% id.), a decrease of a half compared to the previous survey. 1) Annual number of film products

The annual number of film products showed 4,904, an increase by 11.4% compared to the previous survey. When observing its breakdown, the “documentary movie” numbered 2,726 (composition ratio of 55.6%), accounting for the majority, the “theatrical movie” numbered 571 (11.6% id.), the “educational movie” numbered 265 (5.4% id.). The “theatrical movie” remaining on approximately 10% due to a long production period in addition to expensive production cost

Furthermore, when observing the breakdown of the “theatrical movie”, “animations” numbered 346 (composition ratio of 60.6%), the “dramatic movie” marked 225 (39.4% id.).

Incidentally, the annual number of imported films was 187.

When viewing its breakdown, the “theatrical movie” numbered 11,537 (composition ratio of 97.8%), accounting for the majority.

In addition, of annual film prints distributed of the theater films, the prints distributed to “affiliated movie theaters” marked 4,672 (composition ratio of 40.5% in the annual number of film prints of the theater films”, and the prints distributed to “non-affiliated movie theaters” numbered 6,865 (59.5% id.).

When observing the breakdown of the “theatrical movies”, the “dramtic movies” numbered 9,232 (80.0% in the theatrical movies)”, “animations” numbered 2,305 (20.0% id.), thus, the share of the “dramatic movies” sharply expanded from 61.5% in the previous survey. In addition, when viewing the ratio by Japanese and Foreign films, the “Foreign” films accounted for 60.1% in the “dramtic movies”, whereas, the “Japanese” films accounting for the majority such as 99.6% in the “animations”.

Structure of the annual number of film prints distributed in theatrical movies

3) Video sales business

The annual number of video sales marked 64.408548, an increase by 15.1% compared to the previous survey. When viewing the breakdown, the “dramtic movies” numbered 3,505 million (composition ratio of 54.4%), accounting for almost the majority of the total, the “original videos” marked 21.06 million (32.7% id.) and the “TV programs” numbered 8.3 million (12.9% id.).

When observing the “dramtic movies” with the highest share, the “Foreign” films numbered 20.74 million (59.2% in the film dramas) and the “Japanese” films marked 14.32 million (40.8% id.), so the share of the “Japanese” films expanded by approximately 12 point from 28.8% of the previous survey. Incidentally, the share of the “dramatic movies” was 77.1% in the “Foreign” films, whereas, that of the “animations” was 72.5% in the “Japanese” films.

The annual operating costs at enterprises engaging in the film production and distribution, and video sales business was ¥1.5805 trillion and the ratio of operating cost in the annual sales was 89.3%. When viewing its breakdown, the “production costs” marked ¥615.7 billion (composition ratio of 39.0%), accounting for 40% of the total, followed by the “other operating cost” marked 501.9 billion (31.8% id.), the “total salary paid” marked ¥143.1 billion (9.1% id.), the “outsourcing costs” showed ¥95.1 billion (6.0% id.) and the “advertising costs” marked ¥83.1 billion (5.3% id.).
