REALITY OF ORPHANS AROUND THE WORLDChildren are the innocent beings of this world, and are those most affected by the crises that are around them. A large number of children are orphaned as a side effect of war, occupation, natural disaster, chronic poverty, and disease. With a world populati-on of 7 billion people , children make up 2.2 billion of this sta-tistic and within this between 143 million – 200 million are orphans. It is estimated that this statistic will rise to 400 million in 2015. According to internati-onally accepted sources, a child loses a parent every 2 seconds.

In places such as Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East where there is long term po-verty, disaster etc. there is a high rate of orphaned children. The world orphan statistic centres mainly on underdeveloped and developing countries and there are 31 million orphaned child-ren in India alone. On the other hands, in developed countries there are children born out of wedlock, children with disabi-lities and children of divorced families as well as those who are abandoned.

ORPHANAGE WORKS

CATEGORIES OF ORPHAN AIDEducation: With the Orphan Sponsorship Support System, all protected school aged children are provided supported for their education. IHH is trying to provide all the best possible conditions for children to be ready for the future with support according to their talents and strengths either in university or in vocational education institutes. Their school materials such as stationary, clothing and etc. are supplied at the beginning of the academic year.

Health: In addition to medical care and medication support, me-dical check-ups, vaccinations, medical equipment aid and psycho-logical support works have been carried out for them to continue their development.

Accommodation: Orphanages which will provide a safe environ-ment for orphan children who do not have secure accommodation conditions to live in. In addition to this, houses of orphans who live with their mothers are constructed and restored.

Food: In addition to necessary staple food supplies, food packages are in Eid al-Fitr and Adha.

Clothing: During the Orphan Solidarity Days, Ramadan and Qurban, “Clothing Aid Support” is organized to supply the needs of our orphan children.

OUR FOUNDATION’S ORPHAN AID WORKS ARE CARRIED OUT ACCORDING TO THREE DIFFERENT SYSTEMSOrphan Sponsorship Support System: In the system which aims to protect orphans finan-cially, orphans’ education, he-alth, accommodation, food and clothing needs are supplied by regular donations each month.

Project Sponsorship: Project- based works like orphanages/houses establishment and res-toration, health center buildin-gs, accommodation furbishing, school furniture and other needs fulfillment, health services and etc. are done by the sponsor-ship of a person/institution or organization.

Orphan Aid Pool: Besides the IHH Orphan Sponsorship Sup-port System and Project Spon-sorship, regardless of its amount all kinds of aid donated for the orphans are utilized in projects such as restoration of orphana-ges, health services, social ac-tivities of orphans, clothing aid

for Eid via our orphan aid pool present within Orphan Fund.

Aim of Orphan projects:

• To support orphans until they are at the age where they can support themselves indepen-dently, to provide education and give compassion, love and care as a family would and prepare them for life.

• To protect and provide their freedom and rights to orphans just as all children are naturally entitled to

• To provide spiritual as well as tangible support and provide a safe environment for them to grow up in

• To support children who are in war zones, and/or affected by natural disasters or in regi-ons where social order is at risk and in doing so contributing to a positive social order.

ORPHANAGE WORKS

ORPHANAGE WORKSIHH began its first orphanage work in Pakistan in 2003. Assisting refu-gee girls in Afghanistan began with the MSAL (Muhammadan School of Advanced Learning) Orphanage that also later included shelter for Pakistani girl orphans and providing education opportunities. Since 2003, the orphan children have been provided with a warm home where the girls are continuing their university education today. IHH has been running 34 different orphanages, 1 Orphan Life Center and 1 Orphan Education in 12 different countries.

Afghanistan is a country that is landlocked, without any ocean. At its south and its east borders Pakistan, borders Iran on the West, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan at its North. Its biggest city and capital city is Kabul – in the 2011 census, it had a population was 30 million, 99% being Muslim. Within this population 80-85% are Sunni Muslim, whilst the Shiite population make up 15-19%. The Afghan population is made up of the Pashtun, in particular the south of the country, comprises of pe-ople from Tajikistan, the Hazara and people from Uzbekistan.

In addition 5% of the population also has an ethnic population – comprising those of Baluchistan, Turkmens, Nuristani’s and Arabs). Located on one of the centre po-ints of the trade route and its stra-tegic location, throughout history

Afghanistan has at one point or another been occupied by Greeks, Arabs, Mongol, British and the Soviets. Most recently, in 2001 Afghanistan was invaded by the USA and as it stands today is one of the most least developed places in the world. 42% of its population makes less than $1/day, and the literacy rate is around 30%. With war and occupation destablizing the country, there is very little national industry and the current patient to doctor ratio is 7000:1. The only way to be able to stren-gthen the country is to be able to educate the young in order to life the human capital of the upcoming generation, and take ownership of its natural resources. Lacking infrastructure, however creates a vicious cycle of illiteracy and poverty, which makes it difficult for the people of Afghanistan to achieve this by themselves.

Lying on the north of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh is a small South Asian country that has a small border with Myanmar with the rest of the land surrounded by India. Until it declared its indepen-dence in 1971, it was considered a state of East Pakistan and prior to that considered part of British India. Its capital Dhaka is the com-merce and cultural centre of the country. The official language is Bengali and according to unoffi-cial data, has a population over 160 million, with 90% of Bengali’s being Muslim.

The only source of income in the economy is tourism and fishing; 45% of the population live under the poverty line with many living in remote areas. The poverty is par-ticularly destructive, in particular

with its lack of education. Financial constraints as well as a rapid and unplanned urbanisation as well as the governments secular based system, leaving behind many orp-hans as those who are the most deprived in this system.

Poverty, epidemics and natural disasters occurring frequently hit-ting one of the poorest nations on earth has pushed the number of orphans to 6 million.

As IHH we have been carrying out relief work in Bangladesh for many years and we are current-ly operating ten orphanages in the country. Our Foundation also assists with the sponsorship of orphans in 15 different orphans in Bangladesh and provides as-sistance periodically.

The orphanage here was built by IHH for children in who lost their families following the tragic tsunami that hit the area on 26 December 2004. The Istanbul Orphanage is nine blocks built on 5000 square metres, consis-ting of a computer classroom, library, mosque complex and playground and has organised social and cultural activities for the children.

The orphanage takes care of all the children’s health needs and if necessary sends them to neighbouring countries for medical treatment. They also

provide support and guidance throughout the education of children living in orphanages as well as providing scholarships for children who gain a place in university and also provides guidance for children who’s education takes them outside of Aceh.

32 of our girls from the Istanbul Orphanage have gained a place in university with two of them in Malaysia and four of them currently in Turkey. The Istanbul Orphanage Complex is control-led and supervised at regular periods by IHH.

The Philippines is a country lo-cated in South-east Asia in the Malay Archipelago Islands. The capital city is Manila, with Filipino and English the official languages. The population is above 85 million according to 2005 statistics, with 86% Christian and 9% Muslim. Named “Moro” Muslims by the Filipinos and usually named Bangasmoro, most of the Moro Muslims live on the Mindanao Island. 12 million Muslims live here on the island which is econo-mically weak. With years of ethnic discrimination as well as a 40 year civil war with the Philippines, has left the Moro Muslims, starting with education, socially disenf-ranchised with 120,000 Muslims losing their lives during the war and 2 million people forced to live as refugees.

In 2012 peace talks between the Moro Muslims and the Philippine governments has led to improved humanitarian conditions in the region. IHH is one of five inde-pendent members monitoring the Bangasmoro Peace Process ag-reements. Within this framework, IHH has also established an orp-hanage in 2010 to take care of the orphans. A country of South East Asia, Pa-kistan is bordered by the South Arabian Sea, Afghanistan and Iran on its west, China at its north, and India on its east. It is one of the most populous countries in the world with 160 million people and 97.5% being Sunni Muslim. It is governed under a provincial system with Punjab, Sindh, Nort-hwest Front and Baluchistan its main provinces. The capital city is Islamabad, with the official langu-ages being English and Urdu. The-re are also tribal dialects that are spoken throughout the country. Pakistan declared independence on 14 August after a bloody war with England, although in 1971 the country separated once again, with Bangladesh a new nation being in the east.

Turkish/Pakistani relations can be traced back for centuries. The clo-

se relationship have influenced each other in a myriad of ways both socially and culturally. The word “Urdu” is a military word meaning “army” and has its ori-gins in Turkish. A constant state of political unrest also had suffered economically. Unable to find a permanent solution to the chaos within the country has meant that is less economically developed and infrastructure remains unde-veloped. With the majority of the population living under the po-verty line, education, health and infrastructure are serious issues. In 2005, an earthquake that hit Azad Kashmir and the Northwest Front cost thousands of lives and worsened the situation. Pakistan is one of the countries where IHH aids heavily.

The official language is State Nepali, Sanskrit and Mongolian but there are also many ethnic dialects spoken throughout the country. It is one of the most poorest countries in the world. The economy of Nepal has begun to emerge since the 1990’s and although positive, insufficient progress has been made to eliminate poverty.

IHH has many working in the region for many years and with a low lite-racy, IHH school is devoted to the school, mosque and the orphanage. Permanent projects are built by IHH in order to support the Nepalese Muslims and provide opportunities for the future of the youth and to the children. For example, in 2011 the IHH commissioned the Hilal School and mosque in the Ghuski region which met a great need for the Muslims there. NEPAL

Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa, has a special significance in the history of the transatlantic slave trade as the departure po-int for thousands of west African captives. The capital, Freetown, was founded as a home for re-patriated former slaves in 1787.

But the country’s modern his-tory has been overshadowed by a brutal civil war that ended in 2002 with the help of Britain, the

former colonial power, and a lar-ge United Nations peacekeeping mission.

The country is also rich in dia-monds and other minerals. The trade in illicit gems, known as “blood diamonds” for their role in funding conflicts, perpetua-ted the civil war. The government has sought to crack down on the trade.

Located on the most eastern tip of Africa, Somalia is bordered with Djibouti to the north west, Kenya to the South west, on the north is the Gulf of Aden and Yemen and to the Indian Ocean on the east and with Ethiopia to the west. The country has the longest coastline on the continent and the land itself is made up of plateau’s, plans and tablelands. Periodic monsoons and irregular rainfall throughout the year make up the arid clima-te. It has a land mass of 637,657 square kilometres. The capital is Mogadishu and Harges and Bosaso are the other major cities. Somalia’s population according to 2012 estimates is around 10 million and nearly the entire po-pulation is Muslim.

Somalia experienced a major drought in 2011 and thousands

of people migrated as a result with many more losing their lives due to starvation. The Banadir region which included the capital city also suffered intense drought and migration from rural areas. Nearly 300,000 immigrants sett-led into the city, forming unorga-nised, haphazard neighbourhoo-ds and villages, trying to sustain life with little infrastructure. With so much poverty and government investment so limited, it is difficult to meet the basic needs of the population. Lack of educational institutions in the country is one of the biggest problems of the country. In particular, primary education for children is delive-red in shanty barracks. It is of dire necessity for the youth to have hope in the future and this can achieved with the establishment of new educational institutions.

Formerly known as Siam, Thailand is centrally located in the Indochina Peninsula in South east Asia. It is bordered by Burma in west, Cambodia, Laos to the north and Malaysia in the south. In the south, it is bordered by the Gulf of Thailand and to the west is the Andaman Sea. The surface area is 513,120 square metres. Thailand has a population of 67 million and is made up of ethnic Thai, Chinese, Khmer, Laos and Malays. The of-ficial language is Thai and 95% of the population belong to the Theravada sect of Buddhism. There are also animists and Muslims in the country. The Kingdom of Thailand is the main ruling parli-amentary monarchy. Since 1946, King Bhumibol Adulyadej known as Rama IX has been president and also has ownership of military tit-les. The country’s capital and most populous city is Bangkok.

Muslims mostly live in Patani, whi-ch is on the south of Thailand whi-ch is on the east coast of Malacca,

sitting on the mouth of the Pattani river, which is an international trade port since the 16th century. The main exports that come from this port are rubber and tin. There is also an airport in the city. Pattani was previously an Islamic state and was adjoined to Thailand in the 16th century. After 1880, it was divided into seven smaller units, which became connected to Siam.

The civil war that lasted over 40 years has been detriment to the country leaving behind orphans and widows. Suffering for many years, the Malay Muslims of Patani in particular have struggled through many challenges, the least being economic problems. All of these adverse conditions have affected the orphans, in particular those children who do not have a fat-her to support and protect them. Aiding Patani Muslims since 1998, IHH is helping to provide a warm home for the orphans, and has built eight orphanages.
