FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015 (PAGE 14) DAILY EXCELSIOR, JAMMU Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 27 : Padmashree Geeta Chandran, a celebrated artist of Indian classi- cal dance Bharatnatyam gave a lecture cum dance demonstration at Heritage School on 27th August 2015, which was the concluding session of her 4 day session with schools. For last few days she has been visiting schools in Jammu city under the aegis of the Spic Macay - an eminent national level organization known for proliferating awareness about Indian classical forms in dance and music among the youth of India. The dance recital began with the auspicious ceremony of lamp lighting and the dignitaries pres- ent on the occasion were Dr. Sapna Sangra, co-ordinator of J&K chapter of SPIC MACAY and Dr. Seema Rohmetra, co- ordinator for Jammu region. All classical forms of art are an important source of not only aesthetic values but also enhance values of life, mind, soul and spirituality. It is the awareness of these values which the cultural organization of Spic Macay envisions and aims to spread through our heritage of classical music and dance amongst the youth of today. Padmashree Geeta Chandran captivated the eager audience with her enthralling performanc- es which were punctuated with her verbal explanations of three major tenets of classicism, namely bhawa, raga and taal which is also the genesis of the term 'Bharatnatyam'. Her dance performances which were highly emotive and engaging were based on classical themes mainly related to Lord Shiva & Krishna. She was ably supported by a highly talented team of artistes with K. Venkateshwar as the lead vocal- ist, S. Shankar on Mridangam and Rohit Prasanna on flute and her disciple, Ms. Radhika, on nattuvangam, who also gave a graceful dance performance. An interactive session was also held during which the ebul- lient students asked questions to the danseuse who most patiently answered the queries of the stu- dents with all the grace. A few students also got the opportunity to share the stage with Padmashree Geeta Chandran and it was a moment which would be etched in their memories for long. The Vice-Principal, Dr., Gautam Guha expressed his gratitude to Padmashree Geeta Chandran for providing the Heritageans the opportunity to experience the richness of beau- ty of Indian classical dance forms. He also opined that there was a dire need of exposing our young generation to such classi- cal forms for them to make bet- ter choices for learning in life. GD Goenka organizes Sahodaya Inter-School Football Tournament Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 27: GD Goenka Public School, Jammu governed by Om Prakash Bansal Charitable Trust organized three days CBSE Sahodaya Football Tournament 2015-16 in Goenkan Acres. Fourteen teams representing their schools participated in the prestigious competition. After the Inter school match- es, the Prize Distribution Ceremony was held today to felicitate the enthusiastic Football players from various Schools. The chief guest, Shiv Kumar Sharma Joint Secretary (Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council) graced the occasion with his presence. Rajesh Sumbaria, ace foot- baller and coach was the guest of honour. The Principal of Jodhamal Public School was also present on this occasion. Coaches including Moon Stephens, Dharma Paul Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Sanjay and Rocky were felicitated by the chief guest. MHAC Nagbani beat Army Public School Domana by 4-0 goals, Jodhamal trounced G.D Goenka by 2-0 goal. The final match was played between MHAC Nagbani and Jodhamal Public School, which was won by MHAC Nagbani School. Jodhamal Public School was declared the 1st runners-up and GD Goenka Public School was declared the second runners- up. Sahil Kumar of MHAC Nagbani School was adjudged as the top scorer and Kajal Singh of Nagbani was adjudged as best player. The Principal of the School, Dr. R. Nav Yug Hr Sec School holds "Rakhi" making competition Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 27: Navyug Hr. Sec. School celebrated Raksha Bandan-promise of love and everlasting relationship between brother and sister in the School premises, here today. To commemorate this festival a "Rakhi" making competition was organised. Children partici- pated with great enthusiasm and exhibited their creative skills by using different material like stars, colourful flowers, sparkles & dif- ferent waste material. About 120 girls students from class -III to Class-IX participated and showcased their creativity by making designer 'Rakhi' for the competition. Traditional 'Rakhi' designs were the major attraction of the competition. In Sub Junior group : Numanika, Komal and Riya Gupta bagged 1st , 2nd and 3 rd Prize whereas Mriganka and Sarveshwari got Consolation prize In Junior group : 1sr prize went to Deeshikha whereas Nikiya and Poonam got 2nd and 3rd prize. Participants of different age groups both Boys & Girls from various schools of District Jammu took part in the Championship. The silver and bronze medals in Youth (Girls) pistol went to Kavya Kochar and Riga respec- tively. Padamshree Geeta Chandran, who has been trained by Bharatnatyam gurus namely Swarna Saraswathy, Guru K.N Dakshinamurthi Pillai, gave a scintillating performance, enthralling one and all. Other artists accompanying her included Guru S Shankar on Mirdangam, S Venkateshwaran on Vocals, Rohit Prasanna on Flute and Radhika, her disciple on Natluvangam. T R Choudhary, Principal, K V No.1, Jammu was the chief guest on the concluding ceremo- ny, who gave away the medals to the winners of the competi- tions. Earlier today, the final round of games was played between the players. The selection of players was also made for par- ticipation in KVS National Sports Meet to be held soon. Choudhary in his address congratulated the winners of dif- ferent competitions and encour- aged the others to try again till they achieve goal. In Under-19 boys team, Shashank Baru of MHAC Nagbani won the first position by defeating KC International and SOS School in finals under 65 kg weight category, while in girls, Bhumika Mahajan of MHAC Nagbani clinched the first position in under-44 kg weight category. APS Damana organizes Basketball Tournament Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 27: APS Damana organized Inter APS Cluster-1 Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament, which got underway here today. The opening ceremony for the tournament was held at Chenab Brigade campus. Chairman APS Damana graced the occasion as chief guest and Chairperson FWO Chenab Brigade was the guest of honour amongst other distin- guished guests. Inspector General of Police (IGP) IR Kashmir, Sunil Kumar today felicitated the winning team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and its coach Mohammad Amin here at Armed Police Headquarters (APHQ) for their outstanding performances dur- ing the tournaments that wit- nessed participation of 6 teams from Kashmir Division. Cricket tournament organized by Army in Shopian concludes Excelsior Sports Correspondent SRINAGAR, Aug 27: A cricket tournament organized by army in south Kashmir's Behibagh village of Shopian dis- trict concluded today, a defence spokesman said. The defence spokesman said the tournament was organized to meet the local aspirations of the local youth. "The tournament stretched over a period of 68 days and saw participation of 87 teams from Karewa region of Kulgam district and Shopian district. Besides the participants the tournament also witnessed a large number of spec- tators, who defied all norms to cheer up their teams," the spokesman said. He said the final match was played between Landoora and Mohamandpora teams at Behibagh army camp which was attended by almost 800 locals, 30 civil and military dignitaries which include SSP Kulgam, DC Shopian, DSP Shopian, DSP Kulgam, ASP (Operations) Shopian and IB Officer. The match was won by Mohamandpora. "The function was presided over by GOC Victor Force Major General Arvind Dutta," he said. Speaking on the occasion, the General Officer appreciated the efforts of the teams and expressed high gratitude to the locals for making the tournament a grand success. Heritage School hosts Bharatnatyam Dance Recital KV Udhampur holds Closing Ceremony of Regional Sports Meet Excelsior Sports Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Aug 27: KV Udhampur held Closing Ceremony of the three days Regional Sports Meet, here today. The Meet was organized in Under-14 and Under-19 cate- gories and 12 teams participated in it. Certificates and medals were distributed among the position holders by the Principal of the School, Dr R Prasad. KV Suranussi, KV 1 Pathankot and KV 1 Udhampur stood first, second and third respectively in Under-19 catego- ry, while in Under-14 category, KV 4 Jallanhar claimed first posi- tion, KV 2 Udhampur bagged second position and the third place went to KV 1 Udhampur. The players were selected for the camp on the occasion and were given guidelines about the schedule. Mahindra Club scripts win in Sr Hockey Tournament Excelsior Sports Correspondent BUDGAM, Aug 27: Mahindra Club defeated WG Advantars by four goals to one (4- 1) in the Senior Hockey Tournament, organized by Hockey Budgam, under the aegis of Hockey J&K. Ramandeep scored the first goal for Mahindra Club in 5th minute of the match, while sec- ond, third and fourth goals were netted by Satinder Singh, Hardeep Singh and Jatinderpal Singh in 11th, 38th and 55th minutes respectively. For WG Advantars, Navjot Singh was the goal scorer in 55th minute. In another match, Badal Club drubbed Kashmir Mughals by four goals to two (4-2).

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Acricket tournament organized byarmy in south Kashmir'sBehibagh village of Shopian dis-trict concluded today, a defencespokesman said.

The defence spokesman saidthe tournament was organized tomeet the local aspirations of thelocal youth.

"The tournament stretchedover a period of 68 days and sawparticipation of 87 teams fromKarewa region of Kulgam districtand Shopian district. Besides theparticipants the tournament alsowitnessed a large number of spec-tators, who defied all norms tocheer up their teams," thespokesman said.
