The feast of the Epiphany of the Lord gives me the opportunity to reflect on something that I wanted to share with you for a long

time: the implications for our faith of the ever closer possibility that it will finally be shown that there is life, and intelligent life, beyond earth’s boundaries. In 2014 Pope Francis clearly said that if a Martian asked him to baptize him, he would gladly do so, explaining that if the Lord shows us the way, «who are we to close the doors?» In fact, the director of the Vatican Astronomical Observatory and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, the Jesuit Brother and astronomer Guy Consolmagno had already said during his speech at the British Science Festival in 2010 that “any entity, no matter how many tentacles it has, he has a soul and that he «would baptize an alien if asked.»

The central message of the Epiphany is that Christ is the universal savior, not only of a specific race or people, but of all races and peoples: the Magi of the East personify this diversity in a very concrete way, as they are representatives of races and cultures completely different from those of the Jewish people. Likewise, they were look-ing to worship the Child God guided by a star (cf. Lk. 2, 1-9), a sign that his birth includes an undeniable «cosmic» dimension that has implications beyond planet earth: Jesus was born not only to be «king of the Jews» (cf. Mt 2:2), but also to be «king of the world» (cf. Ap 11: 15) and «king and Lord of the universe» (cf. 2Mac 12:15; 2 Mac 7:9).

Modern astronomy calls planets that exist outside our solar system «exoplanets.» It would seem that the only planet in this solar system that meets the necessary conditions for life to exist is our planet earth. However, more and more exoplanets are being discovered that revolve around stars similar to our sun and that, therefore, could host certain forms of life and even intelligent life: at least 4,292 exoplanets have currently been discovered, of which at least 20 have conditions very similar to Earth (including one called «Proxima b», which revolves around the star «Proxima Centauri», almost identical to Earth). It is therefore very likely that life and intelligent life may exist beyond our planet. Far from constituting a risk to our faith, this would simply imply a wonderful broadening of the scope of our evangelizing work, since Christ himself sends us not only to announce his Kingdom to every human being but to «proclaim the gospel to every creature.» (Mk 16:15). Jesus’ gospel indeed is meant to elevate every form of life into something bigger and better.

La fiesta de la Epifanía del Señor me brinda la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre algo que hace tiempo quería compartir

con ustedes: las implicaciones para nuestra fe de la posibilidad cada vez más cercana de que finalmente se demuestre que existe vida, y vida inteligente, más allá del planeta tierra. En el 2014 el Papa Francisco dijo claramente que si un marciano le pide que lo bautice, lo haría gustosamente, pues si el Señor nos muestra el camino, «¿quiénes somos para cerrar las puertas?» De hecho, el director del Observatorio Astronómico Vaticano y presidente de la Fundación del Observatorio Vaticano, el Hermano Jesuita y astrónomo Guy Consolmagno ya había dicho durante su intervención en el Festival de Ciencia británico en 2010 que «cualquier entidad, no importa cuántos tentáculos tenga, tiene un alma» y que bautizaría a un extraterrestre «si se lo pide.»

El mensaje central de la Epifanía es que Cristo es el salvador universal, no sólo de una raza o pueblo específico, sino de todas las razas y pueblos: los Magos de Oriente personifican dicha diversidad en forma muy concreta, al ser ellos representantes

de razas y culturas completamente diferentes del pueblo judío. Asimismo, van a adorar al Niño Dios guiados por una estrella (cfr. Lc. 2, 1-9), señal de que su nacimiento incluye una innegable dimension «cósmica» que tiene implicaciones más allá del planeta tierra: Jesús ha nacido no sólo para ser «rey de los judíos» (cfr. Mt 2,2), sino también para ser «rey del mundo» (Ap 11,15) y «rey y Señor del universo» (cfr. 2 Mac 12,15; 2 Mac 7,9).

La moderna astronomía llama «exoplaneta» a los planetas que existen fuera de nuestro sistema solar. Parecería ser que el único planeta de dicho sistema solar que reúne las condiciones necesarias para que exista vida es nuestro planeta tierra. Sin embargo, cada vez se descubren más exoplanetas que giran en torno a estrellas similares a nuestro sol y que, por tanto, pudieran albergar ciertas formas de vida e incluso vida inteligente: actualmente se han descubierto por lo menos 4,292 exoplanetas, de entre los cuales al menos 20 presentan condiciones muy similares a la tierra (incluyendo uno denominado «Próxima b», que gira en torno a la estrella «Próxima Centauri», casi idéntico a la tierra). Es, por tanto, muy probable que exista vida y vida inteligente más allá de nuestro planeta. Lejos de constituir un riesgo para nuestra fe, ello simple-mente implicaría una maravillosa ampliación de los ámbitos de nuestra labor evangelizadora, ya que Cristo mismo nos envía no sólo a anunciar su Reino a todo ser humano sino a «proclamar el evangelio a toda creatura.» (Mc 16, 15). En efecto, el evangelio de Jesús implica la elevación de cualquier forma de vida hacia algo más grande y mejor.

Celebración de los Tres Reyes

The Father Billini Association invites all families in the community to donate a gift for those most in need. The gift must be simple and new, for children ages from newborn to 12 years. Please bring your gift to our rectory office during office hours. All donations will be given out on the Three Kings Celebration.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 27 at 4 pm in the school auditorium. Only for old Altar Servers.

The Fr. Billini Association invites all children ages baby to 13 to our annual Three King Celebration. Do to the pandemic we will have three sessions for the community at 10am, 12pm and 2pm in the school auditorium. Please wear a mask and respect social distance. All good children will recieve a gift and must be accompanied by an adult.

La Asociación Padre Billini invita a todos los niños desde bebés hasta los 13 años a nuestra celebración anual de los Tres Reyes. A raíz de la pandemia tendremos tres sesiones para la comuni-dad a las 10 am, 12 pm y 2 pm en el auditorio de la escuela. Use una máscara y respete la distancia social. Biblical ReflectionAl ver la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa, vieron al niño con María, su madre, y, cayendo de rodillas, lo adoraron; después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. (Mateo 2, 10-11)

They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.(Matthew 2,10-11)

En este domingo celebramos la fiesta de la “Epifanía del Señor” y la palabra “epifanía” significa manifestación

como parte del misterio de la encarnación del Hijo de Dios. En este sentido, el niño Dios se manifiesta a unos magos que vienen de oriente guiados por una estrella para adorarlo. Podemos decir que la manifestación del niño Dios a los magos de oriente representa la salvación para todos los pueblos de la tierra y no solamente al pueblo de Israel.

Vemos que los magos de Oriente se dejaron guiar por una estrella y se pusieron en camino, es decir, que a través del discernimiento y de la luz de la fe, fueron

dóciles a la voluntad de Dios. Al igual que los magos de Oriente, si nos dejamos guiar e iluminar a través de la luz de la fe, podremos tener un encuentro con el niño Dios al cual le debemos respeto y adoración. Un gesto por parte de los magos, es ofrecerle al niño Dios algunos regalos: oro, incienso y mirra.

Por parte nuestra, también estamos llamados a ofrecer al niño Dios toda nuestra vida de una manera generosa. Esa entrega de nuestra vida a Dios es

fruto de nuestro agradecimiento a él porque en primer lugar, ha sido Dios quien ha querido compartir el regalo más precioso: su propio hijo Jesús que se ha encarnado para nuestra salvación y que nuevamente se encarna en cada una de nuestras vidas. Por lo tanto, lo que le ofrecemos al niño Dios, como lo hicieron los magos de oriente, es lo que hemos recibido en primer lugar por parte de Él. Al igual que los magos de Oriente, estamos llamados a reconocer que Jesús es nuestro rey y Señor y ante él doblamos nuestras rodillas para adorarlo. Fruto del encuentro con el niño Dios, comunicamos al igual que los magos de oriente, esta alegría a los demás, especialmente aquéllos que se sienten tristes y que no tienen esperanza. Guiados por la estrella de Belén, también nosotros vamos caminando por la luz de la fe y orientando a otras personas hacia Jesús, el cual es la “luz de la naciones”.

On this Sunday we celebrate the feast of the “Epiphany of the Lord”. The word “epiphany” means manifestation

as a part of the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God. In this sense, God manifests himself to the magi who come from the East guided by a star to worship Him. We can say that the manifestation of the child God to the wise men from the East represents the salvation that is offered to all the peoples of the earth and not only for the people of Israel.

We see that the Wise Men of the East al-lowed themselves to be guided by a star and followed it until they met the child Jesus. Through discernment and the light of faith, they were docile to the will of God. Like the Wise Men of the East, if we allow ourselves to be guided and enlightened by the light of faith, we will be able to have an encounter with the child Jesus to whom we owe respect and adoration. The magi offered the child Jesus gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

We are called to offer our whole life to the child Jesus in a generous way. Surrender of our life to God is the fruit of our gratitude to Him. It was God who first wanted to share his most precious gift: his own son Jesus. Jesus became incarnate for our salvation and is again incarnated in each one of us in Baptism. Therefore, what we offer to the child God as the wise men of the East, is what we have received in the first place from Him. Like the wise men of the East, we are called to recognize that Jesus is our King and Lord and in from of him we bend our knees to worship him. As a result of the encounter with the child God, we communicate this joy to others, like the wise men of the East, especially those who feel sad and have no hope. Guided by the star of Bethlehem, we too are walking by the light of faith and guiding other people to Jesus, who is the “light of the nations.”
