IFVP 2019 Keynote Speakers

Craftsmanship Keynote: Thomas E. Franklin Thomas E. Franklin is an award‐winning photographer, multimedia journalist, documentary filmmaker, and educator. He joined Montclair State in 2015 as an Assistant Professor in multi‐platform journalism after nearly 30‐years in the news business. Tom is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and is perhaps best known for his iconic flag‐raising photograph taken at Ground Zero on 9/11. He has also produced highly acclaimed multimedia projects on topics such as the recent heroin epidemic in North Jersey, 9/11, the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and toxic dumping by the Ford Motor Company on a Native American community in North Jersey. He is currently working on a series of projects related to immigration in the U.S.   

  Thomas will talk about the many convergences between his works as a photojournalist and visual storyteller with the work of graphic communicators and visual practitioners. He will present some of his photography, both past and present, and talk about how he went from being an artistic child and teenager ‐always creating art‐ to discovering photography while in college and being drawn to the power of the still image as means of merging artistic creativity with journalistic curiosity. Tom is a great fan and supporter of visual practitioning as it has been done in the department at Montclair and has requested graphic recording to be included into some of his projects.

   SAN DIEGO, CA‐ TIJUANA, MX   03‐13‐2019 U.S.‐MEXICO BORDER WALL HONDURAN MIGRANTS BREAK THROUGH BORDER WALL:   A 22‐year old Honduran man carries his young daughter in his arms after he squeezed through the pillars and fencing of the border wall in Tijuana yesterday while the Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) was not on watch. He then sprinted down the beach heading towards San Diego. Shortly after, a teenage boy followed him, and then another father and young girl also went through the fence. Border Patrol was late in spotting them, and a single CBP agent ran after them lagging far behind, as people on the TJ side jeered. They all disappeared into the distance and did not appear to be captured, but this was not confirmed.   ‐photo by Thomas E. Franklin    

Facilitation Keynote: Rob Evans, Facilitator, Imaginal Labs  The field of facilitation is very well established as a proven tool, skill, and process in the world of business. But there was a time — not all that long ago — when the word itself was unknown and facilitators were struggling to explain this new role and its value to organizations.   Rob Evans was there almost from the beginning. He has been facilitating for over 40 years working for some of the world’s foremost consulting companies like Ernst and Young, Capgemini, Accenture, and PwC. He has worked with some of the world’s great companies, including FedEx, Johnson & Johnson, British Airways, and dozens of others as well as social transformation efforts with Women in Film/Sundance, the Pachamama Alliance, the multi‐faith movement for social justice through Auburn Seminary, and the Harvard Negotiation Project.  

 

  In 1995, Rob was instrumental in bringing the MGTaylor DesignShop methodology into Ernst & Young. He founded breakthrough Accelerated Solutions Environment and over ten years built it into a global practice with 28 purpose‐built centers around the world. As with the idea of facilitation in its early days, the ASE wasn’t easy for the business world to understand or appreciate. Bring 65 people together into a Montessori‐School‐like environment for three intense days to solve wildly difficult problems that had stumped people for years? That’s crazy!  

Rob and the ASE team not only established that this new way of working was the future of consulting and collaborative design, but trained thousands of practitioners who are now working on some of the world’s most important challenges. How do you take a new, innovative idea and make it an ESSENTIAL and well‐respected part of humanity’s tool kit?  Today, right now, the visual facilitation field is struggling to define and articulate itself in a way that the business world can easily identify and see the value of. How many times have you received a call or an email from a potential who is “looking for a someone to draw the meeting?” We are still educating the field on what we do, what we call ourselves, how we do it, the value we provide, and how to use the artifact post session.   An early mind mapper and graphic facilitator, Rob understands the challenges our field faces in moving our practice up to the level of legitimate business tool and practice. For decades, Rob has insisted on having a graphic facilitator/recorder as part of his team as he leads large rooms of clients through the wilderness to breakthrough solutions. He understands why visuals are important, how they add to the overall outcome, and has been often overheard defending “the artists” when clients questioned if it was “just all a sideshow distraction.”   In his address, Rob will share experiences, insights and lessons learned along his 40+ year journey in teaching the leaders of the business world the benefits, joys, and challenges of facilitation supported by graphic facilitation and recording.  

    

Leadership Keynote: Aleemna Wraye, Coach and Facilitator Books, videos and speeches on Leadership abound…” New” models, ideas and theories of leadership bubble up endlessly.  Google the word LEADERSHIP and 3,820,000,000 (that’s 3 BILLION, 820 Million!) responses come up. In this engaging, interactive and personally relevant keynote “conversation “, Aleemna Wraye will invite us to consider our own relationship to leadership and examine our willingness to be leaders in our lives and in our craft. 

 

  In addition, in this session we will inquire into how our visual medium supports and deepens the work of the leaders we serve to engage their constituents more fully and profoundly.  Effective leaders can provide a vision and a roadmap for an idea or ideal. The voice of leaders can elevate our thinking to higher levels of awareness and provide a structure for how to realize our vision. As visual practitioners, co‐facilitators, and IFVP members, we can be leaders in our field and practice. It is our vision and voice that brings awareness to the visual field. It is our hands that guide where and how attention is focused and how the collective field develops. It is the collective vision of our work that is building the roadmap. It is how we choose to the tell the story of our visual practice. In this session, Aleemna will coach us through ideas and tools we can develop and hone as individuals, entrepreneurs, and as a collective to move our profession forward.  Aleemna has been working with leaders for over 20 years as a consultant and coach and she sees leadership as a skill we can each develop and explore in our own work and lives. Since first encountering graphic facilitation over 20 years ago, Aleemna has been inspired and uplifted by the power and simplicity of the medium. As a consultant and facilitator, she engages visual artists whenever she can and is an ally in bringing this powerful tool to broader and wider audiences and helping each of us Lead the Way! As a mother of 4 daughters she is invested in our future and the need for elevated and enlightened leadership for humanity and our home planet. 

Business Keynote with Panel of our Peers  

Mara Callaert is the founder of Visuality, www.visuality.eu  She is an energetic and creative businesswoman who is passionate about visualisation, facilitation and positive change. She combines her sparkling personality and her background as an engineer to coach her team and clients. This gives the company a unique approach where pragmatism, analytical thinking, creativity and empathy are key.  Next to building and growing her business, Mara initiated the emergence of the European IFVP community. She also co‐hosted the EuViz conference.  

  

 Mathias Weitbrecht is a European pioneer in the field of visual facilitation. Since 2005 he has developed products, business models and teams ‐ always aligned with a strong purpose‐driven approach. He tis founder and CEO of Visual Facilitators GmbH with a team of 25 visual strategists, graphic recorders and facilitators, as well as author of the book “Co‐Create! Das Visualisierungs‐Buch” (Wiley Publ).  www.visualfacilitators.com  

Sita Magunson is an astute listener with a highly developed capacity for translating complex conversations, dialogues, and presentations into visual form in the service of individual and collective understanding and action. In her work as a graphic facilitator, she works with clients to gain contextual understanding, then designs visual approaches, processes and frameworks that best support the group’s work both in and after the session. In addition to graphic facilitation, Sita has nearly 20 years experience in the field of collaborative design and facilitation, and is deeply versed in the methodology, processes, models, and tools developed by MG Taylor. Her work as a graphic facilitator and a process (or systems) facilitator are enabled and enhanced through her collaboration with an international group of designers and facilitators—The Value Web. 

She is also the co‐founder of Mass Collaborative, a process design and facilitation firm, Easthampton Co.Lab, a community‐oriented coworking and learning space, and Fort Future, a space for intergenerational curiosity. She lives in Western Massachusetts. Sita is a recent recipient of a National Arts Strategies' Creative Community Fellowship, and will be focusing her efforts over the next six months on equitable and inclusive economic development and entrepreneurship efforts in the region.  

Combining 20 years’ facilitation experience with visual tools, Sam Bradd helps groups engage, solve problems, and lead. As the principal of Drawing Change, https://drawingchange.com/ Sam has worked in nine countries and with organizations including the World Health Organization, the First Nations Health Authority, Harvard, and many groups working for social impact. Sam has a Masters in Education (UBC), and is the co‐editor of two books including Drawn Together Through Visual Practice.  He believes that meetings can leave us more whole than when 

we start – it’s not a race across the finish line. Using principles

racism, cultural safety and innovative visuals – Sam and the
