Trent Berhow, of Kiron, a meat inspector for 22 years and member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) said during the conference on Wednesday that 85 percent of the FSIS annual budget is devoted to salaries, and the method in which FSIS intends to cut its spending is to send the meat, poultry and ag products in- spectors home on furlough. Berhow, who is president of the Midwest Coun- cil of Food Inspection Locals with jurisdiction in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, stated the furloughs for all FSIS employees, including the 6,500 food safety inspectors nationwide (and the 275 inspectors in Iowa) would be across-the- board and all at one time for 11 to 15 days. Because plants cannot operate without food in- spectors, they would be forced to close, he point- ed out. According to an article in the Omaha World-Her- ald, the plan would be to furlough all FSIS work- ers nationwide for the same 11 non-consecutive days this summer from mid-July into September. Berhow said approximately three weeks ago he had a conference call with FSIS, in which the de- cision-makers said they were adamant they will not stagger the furloughs. “When they in fact furlough, they intend to fur- lough all 10,000 FSIS employees simultaneously. As far as the agency is concerned, as recently as three weeks ago, there are no other options other than furloughing everybody simultaneously. When the furloughs come, the plants are shutting down. That’s all there is to it,” Berhow stated. A ray of hopefrom the capital?

by Gordon WolfOn the same day a conference call for the media

provided details of sequestration’s devastatingimpact on individuals and the economy, a ray ofhope came from the nation’s capital.

On Wednesday the U.S. Senate passed, by avoice vote, an amendment to transfer $55 millionin existing agriculture funds to the USDA FoodSafety Inspection Service (FSIS) to keep food in-spectors from being furloughed

And, according to news reports, the Senate alsoapproved, by a 73-26 vote on Wednesday, a con-tinuing resolution bill that will keep the govern-ment operating through the end of September.

The measures were scheduled to go to the U.S.House this week.

The issue of sequestration left individuals withuncertainty how the $85 billion across-the-board

spending cuts would personally affect them.As of Wednesday, attention continued to focus

on the possible effects and ripple impact of se-questration on agriculture, which one meat in-spector said would have a global impact.

Trent Berhow, of Kiron, a meat inspector for 22years and member of the American Federation ofGovernment Employees (AFGE) said during theconference on Wednesday that 85 percent of theFSIS annual budget is devoted to salaries, and themethod in which FSIS intends to cut its spendingis to send the meat, poultry and ag products in-spectors home on furlough.

Berhow, who is president of the Midwest Coun-cil of Food Inspection Locals with jurisdiction inIowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, stated thefurloughs for all FSIS employees, including the6,500 food safety inspectors nationwide (and the275 inspectors in Iowa) would be across-the-board and all at one time for 11 to 15 days.

Because plants cannot operate without food in-spectors, they would be forced to close, he point-

ed out.According to an article in the Omaha World-Her-

SEQUESTRATION, from Page 1

“Iowa is number one in the nation in an-nual hog slaughter and in ag product pro-duction and that thousands of Iowans earntheir living in these industries,” Berhowstated. “In Iowa cities of Storm Lake, Deni-son, Perry, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Wa-terloo, Ottumwa, West Liberty and Colum-bus Junction, local economies will sufferwith idle slaughterhouses, thousands ofpeople without work and farmers unable toship their livestock or ag products.”

Berhow said in a February 8 talkingpoint about the impact of sequestration onfamilies and billions in lost food produc-tion due to 2,100 fewer food inspections,President Obama grossly underestimatedthe effects the furlough of 6,500 FSIS in-spectors on the national and world foodsupply.

“The impact would have a ripple effect ofepic magnitude,” he stated. “As soon asyou take an inspector off the floor, thatplant shuts down. Removing inspectorseven for a short period would affect sever-al hundred thousand workers and wouldaffect the supply of meat, poultry and eggproducts and consumer prices.”

Berhow said that approximately 6,300establishments nationwide would be im-pacted by the FSIS furloughs. He painteda gloomy picture of more than $10 billionin production losses; a loss of more than$400 million in wages to food industryworkers; limited supplies of meat, poultryand ag products and higher for consumers;and a compromise of food safety. In addi-tion, the export of ag products to foreigntrading partners would stop.

The numbers on the economic impact ofthe furloughs came in a letter issued bythe American Meat Institute to AgricultureSecretary Tom Vilsack, Berhow comment-ed.

Berhow worked at Tyson Foods (for-merly IBP) and Farmland Foods in Deni-son for 17 years and asked individuals tothink of the impact the loss of 1,800 jobswould have on a town of 8,500. He said 20inspectors work at the two plants.

“Sequestration is a horrible policy. I amparticipating in the call to urge all Iowansto send a message to congress. We need toend sequestration madness now,” he stat-ed.

Barring federal government action to de-tour sequestration, Berhow said he washopeful that the Essential Services Act of

2013, would be enacted. The amendment, introduced in the Sen-

ate, requires USDA to use its funding toavoid furloughing meat and poultry in-spectors and would reallocate $55 millionin funds and define an essential employeeas “an employee that performs work in-volving the safety of human life or the pro-tection of property, as determined by thehead of the agency.”

In addition, the amendment gives au-thority to department leadership to trans-fer budgetary resources within theiragency to carry out the amendment, sub-ject to the limitation that transfers mayonly be made to maintain essential em-ployees.

Tyson Foods is also optimistic that nointerruption will occur in production due tothe essential nature of food processing.

The company’s official statement said itis disappointed that the administration andCongress haven’t been able to agree onneeded cuts in government spending.

“However, because meat inspection hashistorically been considered ‘essential’ bythe federal government, we're optimisticthere will be no interruption in this publichealth and safety function. We do not ex-pect any immediate impact on our busi-ness,” the statement read.

It continued that disrupting food inspec-tion is a disservice to all consumers, in-cluding those who work in Tyson’s plants, raise cattle, chickens and hogs for Tysonand invest in the company.

Tyson’s statement stated the companyhas been considering measures it mighttake if inspector furloughs become a real-ity and that once the company receivesmore details from the USDA, it will beginto develop contingency plans.

Concerning Wednesday’s Senate voicevote to transfer $55 million in existingagriculture funds to FSIS, Senator CharlesGrassley stated, “It seems pretty clear thatthe Department of Agriculture is not doingeverything possible to avoid something asdrastic as furloughing meat and poultryproduct inspectors, and has failed to followthe OMB directive on the sequester, whichunfortunately made this amendment nec-essary.”

He added, “Given the uncertainty USDAhas created with its rhetoric about fur-loughs, this amendment allowed Congressto give certainty back to farmers, con-sumers, and workers in the meat and poul-try products industry.”

July cattle report amongstats NASS to suspend dueto sequestration

The July cattle report is to be among thestatistics surveys and reports that theUSDA’s National Agricultural StatisticsService said it will suspend for the re-mainder of the fiscal year due to reducedfunding caused by sequestration.

The March 12 post on the NASS websitesaid that before deciding upon the pro-gram suspensions, NASS reviewed itssurvey programs against mission- anduser-based criteria as well as the amountof time remaining in the fiscal year to con-duct the surveys with the goal of findingavailable cost savings and maintainingthe strongest data in service to agricul-ture. NASS stated the decision to suspendthe reports was not made lightly, but itwas nevertheless necessary, given the

funding situation.Other reports to be suspended include:All catfish and trout reports includingcatfish feed deliveries and catfish pro-cessingPotato stocks reports All non-citrus fruit, nut and vegetableforecasts and estimates June rice stocks report All hops and hops stocks estimates Mink report Milk production reports including pro-duction, disposition and incomeJune on- and off-farm stocks for Aus-trian winter peas, chickpeas, dry peasand lentilsJuly acreage forecasts for Austrian win-ter peas, dry edible peas and lentils

Smithsonian’s website celebrates farm heritageAmerican enterpriseexhibit to open in 2015

On National Agriculture Day (March19), the Smithsonian’s National Museumof American History unveiled a new web-site where the public can upload storiesabout technologies and innovation thathave changed their work lives in agricul-ture - stories about precision farming,food-borne illness tracking, environmen-tal concerns, government practices, irri-gation, biotechnology and hybrid seeds.

This spring, the museum is launchingthe Agricultural Innovation and HeritageArchive, reaching out to farmers, ranch-ers and American agri-business to pre-serve America’s agricultural heritage andbuild a collection that reflects modernagricultural practices.

Curators are seeking stories, photo-graphs and ephemera to record and pre-serve the innovations and experiences offarming and ranching.

For details and to participate, the pub-lic may visit americanenterprise.si.edu.

As an example of the agriculture storiesthe Smithsonian is seeking, the museumwill accept a donation of road signs relat-ed to no-till production and organic farm-ing from Jim Rapp, a corn and soybeanfarmer from Princeton, Illinois.

“The story of agriculture is importantand complex,” said John Gray, director of

the museum. “In Jefferson’s time, 96 percent of

Americans were farmers; today, thatnumber is less than 2 percent. Despitethis drop, productivity has skyrocketedand agriculture has evolved into a tech-nology-driven profession with the cab ofa tractor akin to a traditional CEO’s of-fice.”

This new collection of stories, photosand objects will play a role in the “Amer-ican Enterprise” exhibition, an 8,000-square-foot multimedia experience thatwill immerse visitors in the dramatic arcof the nation’s story, focusing on the roleof business and innovation in the UnitedStates from the mid-1700s to the pres-ent.

The exhibition is scheduled to open inMay 2015.

The American Enterprise project budg-et is $20 million, which includes the ex-hibition, a virtual exhibition on the Web,a rich array of programs and demonstra-tions as well as an endowment for a Cu-rator of American Business.

Recent gifts in support of the “Ameri-can Enterprise” exhibition include a $2million gift from Monsanto Company anda $1 million gift from the United SoybeanBoard.

“American agriculture has gonethrough a tremendous transformation inthe past seven decades, becoming a high-tech industry, deeply affecting not just

farmers themselves but every Americanand the American experience in general,”said Peter Liebhold, curator and chair, Di-vision of Work and Industry.

The exhibition will tell the story of thenation’s business, centering on themes ofopportunity, innovation, competition andcommon good with examples drawn fromfive areas: agriculture, consumer finance, information technology/communication,manufacturing and retail/service.

Chronological in organization, “Amer-ican Enterprise” will use objects, graph-ics and interactives to examine how theUnited States moved from a small de-pendent nation to one of the world’s mostvibrant and trend-setting economies.

Visitors will explore the development ofAmerican agriculture through objectssuch as Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, a 1920sFordson tractor and an Agacetus genegun, which represent machines and in-novation that increased productivity andscience that gave insight to the genetic

structure of plants. Agriculture has employed science and

technology to dramatically increase pro-duction and choice while lowering prices, but these changes have also altered theexperience of farmers and the public inunexpected ways.

The initial objects donated to the Agri-cultural Innovation and Heritage Archiveproject came from Tennessee Farm Bu-reau member Pat Campbell of CleburneJersey Farm, a multigenerational dairyfarm founded in the 1870s in Spring Hill,Tenn.

Campbell donated a selection of photo-graphs, a computer cow tag and readerunit to show the change in dairying froma hand-labor intensive process to a mod-ern computer-run operation, as well ashis personal recollections about howchanging technology has altered his worklife and has led to greater efficiency andsafety.

The National Museum of AmericanHistory is currently renovating its Westexhibition wing, developing galleries onbusiness, democracy and culture. Formore information, visit americanhisto-ry.si.edu.

The museum is located at 14th Streetand Constitution Avenue N.W., and isopen daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.(closed December 25). Admission is free. For Smithsonian information, the publicmay call 202-633-1000.

Music and maternityA few weeks ago, my

husband had to call our vetto pull what turned out tobe a 90-pound calf. I wastold the ordeal was noteasy, but he was told that ifwe had a calving pen itwould have been easier.

So, my husband calledme in and asked if Ithought we should pur-chase a calving pen. Whatam I going to say?

“No, dear. I’d rather takea vacation, perhaps tosomeplace warm, like Flori-da.”

That never works, so Ijust mumbled somethingthat sounded like a what-ever, but I think he proba-bly heard a yes.

A few days later, it wasdelivered to the farm, andhe and the boys set it up.

We now have a materni-ty ward in our barn ... forcows. Well, it’s technicallyfor heifers, but I’m sure if acow was having someproblems they could use ittoo.

(I know, you’re amazed Iknow the difference be-tween a cow and a heifer. Ido pay attention occasion-ally, but just don’t tell myhusband. Then I’d be ex-pected to know other stuff.)

My husband told me he’sused it a couple times and itworks great. I just nod myhead. I’ve seen a picture. Itjust looks like a pen and a

chute. I’m not sure how itwould be useful, and I don’treally want to know. Whenhe says the words “pull”and “calf” in the same sen-tence, I try not to be in thebarn.

I held the flashlight forone calf being pulled earlyin our marriage, and it didnot go according to plan. Idon’t really want to see arepeat.

I’m sure I’ll get the nerveup at some point, like whenboth boys have gone off tocollege and I can’t shuffleoff the responsibility tothem.

The most recent calfcame on Monday night, after we returned home

from a band and vocal con-cert that was supposed tohave been last Tuesday. Be-cause of the weather it wasmoved to Monday night.

The day before that wassupposed to be the speechbanquet, which was alsomoved to this Monday be-cause of weather.

On Monday morning, thebig kid and I left around6:30 a.m. to head into townfor his show choir practiceand for me to go to work.

After school he had golf, then did a quick change forthe speech banquet.

When that was finished,he did another quickchange for the vocal andband concert.

We finally got back to thehouse around 9:30 p.m.,when my husband checkedon the heifers and cows tofind that one was havingsome problems.

Thank goodness the vet’sdaughter was finished withher concert as well, in aneighboring town. I wouldhave felt bad if she missedpart of it.

Luckily, the calf arrivedjust fine but my husbandhad to go down and check ita couple times before he fi-nally went to sleep around2 a.m.

He said our new mater-nity ward worked great.

I still think Florida wouldhave been better!

ISU examines farmer use of conservation loan programs

Iowa is one of the most productive agricultural statesin the United States but it also faces water quality chal-lenges related to crop and livestock production practices.A number of conservation programs are in place to helpfarmers and landowners improve conservation practices;however, demand for the programs often outweighs thefunds available.

To help address the issue, Iowa introduced Clean WaterState Revolving Fund (CWSRF) nonpoint source pollu-tion programs within the state in 2005. To see if the pro-grams were making a difference, state CWSRF staff con-tacted Iowa State University Extension and Outreach tohelp conduct an evaluation.

Results from an ISU Extension and Outreach-led eval-uation of the CWSRF’s Local Water Protection Programwere published in the February 2013 issue of the Jour-nal of the American Water Resources Association. Ex-tension sociologist J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr. led the researchteam.

Congress established the CWSRF in 1987 to help com-munities fund infrastructure and other water-quality im-provement projects. In 1992, some states' CWSRF pro-grams began providing loans for agricultural pollutionprojects. These programs use federal money to providesubsidized loans to help farmers and landowners fundconservation practices that improve water quality.

In 2004 the Iowa CWSRF established the Local WaterProtection Program and the Livestock Water Quality pro-gram. The programs are jointly administered by the IowaDepartment of Natural Resources, the Iowa Finance Au-thority and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and LandStewardship.

The CWSRF nonpoint source loan programs were de-signed to increase the scope, scale and rate of best man-agement practices adoption on Iowa's agricultural landby relieving capital constraints and decreasing the fi-nancial burden associated with adopting the practices. While the programs gained traction in their first years,by 2007 they had not attained desired levels of partici-

pation and Iowa CWSRF staff wanted to find out why. They also wanted to know if the programs were helpingparticipants to increase investments in conservationpractices.

In 2008, Arbuckle began working with IDNR andIDALS staff to evaluate the programs. The research teamsurveyed farmers and landowners and conducted focusgroups with agency field staff.

“We learned that farmers who had taken loans viewedthem as effective and user-friendly. Nearly all loan re-cipients believed that the loans had helped them to ac-complish their conservation goals more rapidly than theywould have otherwise. More than 90 percent agreed thatthey would recommend the programs to others andwould take a loan again if needed,” Arbuckle said. "Ourfocus groups with agency field staff found that many ofthe staff who were not promoting the programs simplywere not familiar enough with them to feel comfortableusing them.

The article published in the Journal of the AmericanWater Resources Association focuses on the LWPP.

The LWPP loans are not a replacement for cost-sharefunding of on-farm conservation projects, but rather, theloans leverage the cost-share and allow farmers to ex-pand their conservation projects and complete them in amore timely manner, Arbuckle said.

Based on results from the survey, farmers typicallysupplement their cost-shares with these loans. The loanprogram aids farmers in making larger investments inconservation.

“One of our main findings was that landowners whoused the program thought it was very effective,” Ar-buckle said. “The program helped the participants im-plement more conservation practices more quickly thanthey could have without the loans.”

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach pro-vides many resources for farmers and landowners.

Berne Co-opgrowth continues

by Greg ForbesA couple of new additions grace the

Berne Co-op facilities scattered through-out western Iowa. At the Ute location, twonew bins, – with capacities of 500,000and 150,000 bushels – a receiving pit anda grain dryer were added and completedin October.

Brady Goslar, grain manager for BerneCo-op, explained that the additions weremade to help growers during the harvestseason.

“We added them to help accommodatefarmers so they can get in the field andharvest earlier,” Goslar said, and added,“It also helps us be able to store it better.”

Since the project was completed in Oc-tober, the new bins and dryer have notbeen utilized but the benefits will be no-ticed immediately.

“It should save on the spoiled and dam-aged grain and it could also reduce elec-tricity in the long run,” he said.

The Mapleton location is in the processof being equipped with a new 14 footwide by 80 foot long scale.

“The old one fell in,” Goslar explained.“But we got a good start on installing thenew one today (March 4) and the crew ismaking progress.”

He added he expected to see the scale inoperation by early April.

Berne Co-op opened in Berne and wasmoved to Ute. Since the move, Berne hashad new locations open in Mapleton, IdaGrove, Anthon and Morehead.

According to Goslar, all but the More-head location were purchased from oldco-ops. Goslar, who has worked withBerne since 2000, said he pursued a po-sition with Berne to exercise his agricul-tural background.

“I grew up in the ag field and I still farm, myself. This was a good fit,” he said. “Ithas taught me how to be a better manag-er on the farm.”

The two new bins completed in October and pictured above, have storage capacities of500,000 and 150,000 bushels. Photo by Bruce A. Binning

With spring and planting season on thehorizon, the U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) is alerting farmers and ranchers oftheir final chance to sow a seed for their fu-ture by being counted in the 2012 Census ofAgriculture.

“We’ve received more than 1.8 millioncompleted Census forms, and we want torecognize the dedication and effort of themany farmers, ranchers and growers whohave responded,” said Agriculture SecretaryTom Vilsack. “I urge those who have not yetresponded to seize this opportunity. There isstill time to be counted if you respond today.”

The Census of Agriculture, conducted onlyonce every five years, is the only source ofconsistent and comprehensive agriculturaldata for every state and county in the na-tion. It looks at farms, value of land, marketvalue of agricultural production, farm prac-tices, expenditures, and other factors that af-fect the way farmers and ranchers do busi-ness. The information is used by town plan-ners, policy makers, agribusinesses and oth-ers to help make important growth-generat-ing decisions.

“Before you tackle your decisions for thisgrowing season, make sure you’ve re-sponded to the Census of Agriculture. It’s theeasiest choice to make,” said Vilsack. “At atime of uncertainty in our nation, we rely on

sound data – statistics that lay the ground-work for our programs and policies. By re-sponding to the Census, you are sowingseeds that will help reap benefits and growthe future of American agriculture.”

The 2012 Census will provide a vital snap-shot of agriculture today that will be used toshape the future of the agriculture industry, rural America, and the lives of those USDAserves for years to come.

This week (March 17-23), USDA’s Na-tional Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS)will begin mailing a final copy of the 2012Census of Agriculture to producers who havenot yet responded. NASS is committed to en-suring that every farm and ranch operationin the United States is counted. Therefore,NASS representatives will make follow uptelephone calls and personal visits through-out the spring to those who have not re-sponded. Farmers and ranchers can returntheir forms by mail or online by visiting a se-cure website, www.agcensus.usda.gov. Fed-eral law requires a response from everyonewho receives the Census form and requiresNASS to keep all individual information con-fidential.

For more information about the Census, including helpful tips on completing the Cen-sus form, visit agcensus.usda.gov or call 1-888-4AG-STAT (1-888-424-7828).

by Greg ForbesFarm Service Cooperative (FSC) recent-

ly received the green light to install newstate of the art features at the Schleswiglocation.

In late February into early March, FSCrepresentatives and the Crawford CountyBoard of Supervisors discussed the possi-bility of the installation of an additional30,000 gallon anhydrous ammonia tankalongside the existing tank of the samesize.

At the February 26 Supervisors meet-ing, FSC feed and grain manager TomGrote, stationed in Harlan, explained thatthe Iowa Department of Agriculture landstewardship regulations require permis-sion from the county supervisors for theconstruction or addition to anhydrous am-monia tanks.

“Basically, in that set of rules, it saysnotification must be provided to the gen-eral public at the County Board of Super-visors to consider proposing anhydrousammonia storage locations,” Grote said onFebruary 26. “Any time we expand ouranhydrous capacity…we have to gothrough the process, fill out an applicationto the state and get county board approvalfor that activity to happen.”

Crawford County Supervisor Cecil Blumquestioned whether or not FSC had field-ed objections from the general public.Grote answered that the FSC representa-tives visited nearby properties prior to themeeting and received support from theproperty owners.

Grote continued that the additional tankand the entire Schleswig facility were de-signed with the welfare of Crawford Coun-ty citizens in mind.

The supervisors explained they fullysupported the additional tank, but due tothe language on the agenda, the action

was moved to the March 5 Crawford Coun-ty Board of Supervisors meeting agenda.

On March 5, the supervisors votedunanimously to grant permission to FSCfor the installation of an additional30,000 gallon anhydrous ammonia tankto the Schleswig facility pending the ap-proval from the Iowa Department of Agri-culture.

Grote explained that with permissiongranted, FSC will begin to install the an-hydrous ammonia tank to the Schleswigfacility following the spring planting sea-son.

“Hopefully, we’re going to start aboutMay 1 after the spring season becausehopefully we will be in the field if we getgood weather in the next few weeks,” hesaid.

The new tank features a new riser sys-tem to increase customer and employeesafety. The riser system contains a hy-draulic step that will rest on the tire of thenurse tank. Grote stated the step will pre-vent an employee from slipping on a damptire.

With a growing member base, the newtank will allow the Schleswig facility tokeep up with increased demand for anhy-drous ammonia application.

“It’s newer, better and a little bigger,”Grote said.

Following the spring season, FSC willalso begin construction on a new 80 foottruck scale, which will replace the current30 foot scale. The new scale will help thefacility manage the growing size of ma-chinery.

Grote added that the additions are muchanticipated but were made possible by thesupport of Crawford County.

“We’d like to thank the Crawford Coun-ty Board of Supervisors for allowing us tomove forward with the projects,” he said.

Soybean exports to China represent amajor component of Iowa’s agriculturaleconomic power. Several members of theIowa Soybean Association (ISA) are trav-eling throughout China to strengthen ex-isting relationships and explore new mar-kets and opportunities. The trip began onMarch 15 and will conclude on March 24.

The trade trip’s progress is document-ed at www.iasoybeans.com/chin-ablog2013/.

“Although we live in a very global anddigital world, face-to-face communicationis vital to our business relationships incountries such as China,” said Mark Jack-son, ISA president and farmer from RoseHill.

“Iowa soybean farmers have historical-ly been trusted and valued suppliers to

China and we’ll continue to do so. Devel-oping and strengthening these relation-ships is part of our business plan. In ad-dition, we want to be on the front-lines ofnew uses and markets for our soybeans, such as aquaculture.”

ISA representatives include Jackson;Brian Kemp, ISA vice president andfarmer from Sibley; Grant Kimberley,ISA director of development; and KirkLeeds, ISA chief executive officer. Alsoattending are Bill Northey, Iowa Agri-culture Secretary; Jeff Stroburg, WestCentral Cooperative president and CEO;Pete Lombardo, AGP China sales agent;and Peter Mishek, Mishek Inc. interna-tional marketing consultant and com-modity trader.

China is the world’s biggest soybeanimporter and consumer and Iowa leadsthe nation in producing soy. In 2012, 44percent of U.S. soybeans were exportedand, of those, 65 percent were pur-chased by China.

With food, entertainment and morethan 125 auction packages, the Iowa 4-H Foundation's Fourth Annual Gala, presented by John Deere, raised$92,000 to support the Iowa 4-H pro-gram statewide and at the club level.

Even some 4-H youth played a role inreaching this amount, which was near-ly $19,000 more than the 2012 galatotal.

“This year our auction included itemsdonated by 15 Iowa 4-H members, which raised $2,145. Fifty percent ofthe proceeds from those items will begiven to the members’ choice of their 4-H clubs or county endowment,” saidKris Fish Kuhlmann, executive directorfor the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

The 4-H Foundation also collaborat-ed with Iowa State University Extensionand Outreach in Polk County to raisefunds for the Polk County 4-H Endow-ment Fund.

The gala revenue total included$16,400 raised to send Iowa delegatesto the National 4-H Conference. Majorsupporters included The Des MoinesRegister, David and Valerie Pace of Ro-seville, Minnesota, and Harry and Phyl-lis Davis of Williamsport, Maryland.

A sweet slice of the gala revenue,$11,050, came from the auction of 14desserts.

Other specialty items included a first-ever Tool Belt auction in conjunctionwith the highly anticipated Purse Auc-tion, with 4-H “celebrities” serving asguest models.

Some 310 4-H supporters, a recordcrowd, attended the March 2 event atthe Des Moines Marriott Downtown.Guests included Iowa Secretary of Agri-culture Bill Northey and Hancock Coun-ty 4-H’er Ashley Smeby, who sharedher 4-H experiences and treated guestsby singing “It’s Your Life,” by FrancescaBatistelli.

“The generous bidding from atten-dees and online bidders was tremen-dous,” said Deb Pullin-Van Auken, board president of the Iowa 4-H Foun-dation.

She noted that, before the eventbegan, more than 126 online bids, to-taling $82,00, had been made.

Proceeds from the gala benefit theIowa 4-H Foundation and its mission tosupport 4-H youth and 4-H youth pro-grams offered by Iowa State UniversityExtension and Outreach.

Harvesting toysBandow grows IH collection from garage sale item

by Greg ForbesOne small item from a

garage sale has led to anexpansive collection for oneCrawford County man.

Nearly 25 years ago,Charles Bandow receivedan International 400 hiswife, Sharon, purchasedfrom a local garage sale for50 cents.

“It’s worth about $500now,” Bandow said of theflagship toy in his collec-tion.

A quarter of a centurylater, his collection hasgrown to 200 replica Inter-national toys. The scalesvary from 1/8 to 1/32.

“The 1/32 are probablytwo inches tall but 1/8weighs about 50 pounds,”he explained.

The piece that started hiscollection remains the cen-terpiece. The International400 carries an impressivemonetary value but themodel carries a significantsentimental value forBandow.

“It was the first one,” hesaid.

“My dad used to use oneand my uncle had one too. It’s a nice looking tractor.”

Although his collectionhas some different brands,International models com-pose the vast majority.

“I’ve got a couple of otherones (brands) but most areInternational. We do haveone little John Deere thatwas purchased at a garagesale. It’s for visiting chil-dren because they knowthey can’t touch the Inter-nationals,” he said.

“That’s all I’ve everfarmed with. I still use In-ternationals.”

At first, Bandow collectedthe toys from flea markets, garage sales and wherever

he could find them. Recently, he has focused

on traveling to toy shows topurchase models in the bestcondition.

“I used to buy them outof the box but now I try tostick with ones still in thebox,” Bandow said.

Bandow estimated he at-tends two or three toyshows per year withAudubon and Charter Oakas familiar stops.

He explained his favoritepart of collecting the minia-ture machines is the vari-ety available and to see thescaled down evolution ofagricultural technology.

“I like finding differentones (models),” Bandowsaid.

“They (toy manufactur-ers) keep on coming outwith something different.”

Aside from tractors,Bandow boasts a differentcollection that spans 48years.

Since 1964, the HesstonNational Rodeo has re-leased a commemorativebelt buckle for the rodeo.

Each year, Bandow hasventured to a local imple-ment dealer and purchasedthe newest style.

“I’ve got every year,”Bandow said.

For the last 25 years, Charles Bandow has collected toy International tractors. His collection now features more than200 replica tractors and memorabilia of all shapes and sizes. Photos submitted.

Charles Bandow’s Inter-national collection is not lim-ited to toy tractors. The grillfrom an International Mmodel holds the pedestal fora 1/8 scale M.

When Charles Bandowstarted collecting toy Inter-nationals, he purchased thetractors in an array of con-ditions. Today, Bandowprefers pristine models stillin the box.

Red tractors of all modelsspeckle the landscape of afarm layout.

The tractors closely repre-sent the fleet CharlesBandow still uses on hisfarm today.

A house to tweet aboutNature-minded students build homes for bluebirds

by Greg ForbesWhen the reclamation project of the old

Crawford County Landfill is complete, thegrounds will be speckled with woodenboxes that will serve as houses to one ofIowa’s natural living treasures; the east-ern bluebird.

In December, SportDOG Brand, theleading manufacturer of electronic train-ing products for sporting dogs, an-nounced the Crawford County PheasantsForever as the winners of a $25,000 grantto be used for the landfill reclamationproject.

The 145-acre plot of land was left aban-doned when the Crawford County Land-fill moved in 2007.

Now declared environmentally safe, theCrawford County-owned land sits as anatural habitat for Iowa wildlife and of-fers a tremendous opportunity for outdoorrecreation.

The grant will be used to plant trees andnatural prairie grasses and develop theland into a plot to accommodate recre-ational and environmentally educationalactivities.

The bluebird houses are one aspectmeant to revitalize the unused propertyas a natural haven for wildlife and out-door enthusiasts.

When KR Buck, of Crawford CountyPheasants Forever, began to write thegrant application for SportDOG, he con-tacted Donna Koch, a science teacher atDenison Middle School (DMS) and coor-dinator for the Ringneck Outdoor Club, tosee if her Ringneck members would be in-terested in a project.

Buck commissioned the Ringnecks –DMS students in grades six through eight– to build 20 bluebird houses to be placedon the perimeter of the old landfill plot.

The students, who build and sell birdand bat houses as a fundraiser for futureprojects for the club, agreed to Buck’s re-quest and set to work under the guidanceof DMS industrial tech teacher NathanMahrt.

Buck said, “They (students) did all theconstruction themselves. It’s great be-cause they learn the skill of carpentry and

also learn about nature.”Koch and Buck explained that the con-

struction of the birdhouses stayed true tothe mission of the reclamation project.

Denison resident Rex Garside had re-modeled his deck and donated the 2x6cedar planks to the Ringnecks to turn intothe birdhouses.

“The whole thing is about reclamationso even the birdhouses are made out ofrecycled stuff,” Koch said.

The boxes earn the classification asbluebird houses from their resemblanceto a bluebird’s natural habitat. Before theadvent of artificial birdhouses, Buck ex-plained that bluebirds used abandonedwoodpecker nests in hollow trees.

“The design of the box mimics that,”Buck said.

The students are scheduled to installthe boxes on April 4 during bluebird mi-gration season.

Buck explained that when the bluebirdhouses are installed, they must be care-fully monitored. He continued the homesare popular nesting spots for sparrowsand tree swallows.

“For the first two weeks in April, wewill have to monitor them (the houses)and if they are taken by something else,we’ll have to clean out the house,” Bucksaid, and added, “We are just helping thebluebirds find a place to nest.”

The impact of bluebird nests can beseen throughout Crawford County. Pastefforts by area Eagle Scouts and other en-vironmentally minded agencies to installhouses have generated high traffic countsof bluebirds.

“There are probably 200 bluebird boxeson county roads throughout CrawfordCounty. Those have been very success-ful,” Buck said.

In addition to the bluebird housing de-velopment, the Ringneck students willalso help plant trees in late April and par-ticipate in other activities to improve thearea and make an impact on nature.

“We plan to do some other projectsthere with the students. I’d like to see thekids get involved and use it (reclamationplot) as a classroom,” Buck stated.

Ringneck Outdoor Club students proudly display their hand made bluebird houses along withthe $25,000 grant check from SportDOG Brand. The RingnecksDonna Koch, science teacher at Denison

Middle School (DMS), formed the RingneckOutdoor Club in conjunction with KR Buckand the Crawford County Pheasants Forev-er to generate an enthusiasm for the outdoorsin students.

As a Ringneck, students learn about na-ture through field trips and activities and alsoparticipate in projects to help improve na-ture.

A major project of the Ringnecks is the con-struction and sale of bird and bat houses.

With the help of DMS industrial techteacher Nathan Mahrt, students hand-makehouses for wrens, bats, bluebirds, butterflies

and more. The money generated from the birdhous-

es, as well as support from groups such asPheasants Forever and the Izaak WaltonLeague, helps the Ringnecks fund trips andprojects.

The club also monitors the garden andtrees at the middle school.

Each activity the Ringnecks partake in wasdeveloped to engage student with natureand help them explore their curiosity in theoutdoors.

“This is for those kids that love the outdoorsand are looking for something to do afterschool,” Koch said.
