Getting Speakers for IEEE Programs
05/03/202319
Speakers
Distinguished Lecture Program– Provide quality eminent speakers to Sections and
Chapters, Student Branch Chapters and Student Clubs– IEEE DLs are engineering professionals who lead their
fields in technical developments that shape the global community
– Societies/Councils will often NOT fund DLs to lecture for conferences that charge a registration fee!!
Member Visit Program– Travel for these speakers is not funded by the society but
may be funded by local chapters or may be in conjunction with other travel by the speaker (resulting in no extra travel costs

Speakers
Partner on speaker/seminar series with electrical, computer and other appropriate departments Feature professors, graduate students, undergraduate students (possibly also from other departments to broaden the experience - sustainability, other issues) An opportunity for students to give a presentation in a friendly environment.

Speakers
Look at other partnership opportunities: – Professional organizations – Student organizations – Government labs – Service Clubs – Municipalities – Chamber of Commerce – Industry – Organizations – Public Funders – Others like NGOs (non-governmental organization)
22 05/03/2023
Speakers
Look towards the companies/businesses in your section: – Invite
CEOs Presidents Leading engineers and others
– to present about innovation, industry trends, new applications, technology platforms, community projects, new work at your institution, present awards …
23 05/03/2023
Speakers
Use the Webinar or other tools to “beam” a speaker in (IEEE, Skype, other tools): – reduces the time and financial commitment (travel) by the
speaker AND – at the same time this type of event can be accessed by
the audience members who are remote and would have difficulty attending in person AND
– a webinar type event can be stored and accessed again at a later date
24 05/03/2023
Speakers
Sometimes it is easier to attract speakers if you form a series of events (seminars) that generate some traction with the industry, community, section etc. In other words, you Generate a following Examples: – Seminar series on professional development ... – how to find a job, prepare a resume, leadership, effective
management, … – Workshops

IEEE Certificates Program

IEEE Certificates Program
Educational programs offered (for the most part) in non-academic settings – Specifically, educational programs offered by IEEE
Sections and local IEEE Society Chapters
IEEE provides an opportunity to have these programs approved and recognized by IEEE – This approval allows the issuing of official IEEE certificates
to participants– These certificates indicate how many Continuing
Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or Learning Units (LUs) were provided by each activity
– In 2013 we have provided 17,000 certificates27 05/03/2023
IEEE Certificates Program
Continuing Education Unit (CEU) – A uniform unit of measure for continuing education and
training One CEU is awarded for each 10 contact hours of instruction or study Definitions and recognitions are managed by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training – IACET (http://www.iacet.org)
– IEEE is an Authorized CEU Provider through IACET – IEEE has adopted IACET’s guidelines and criteria for all its continuing professional development programs
– IEEE conducts peer review for programs that wish to provide CEUs

IEEE Certificates Program
PDH = one contact hour of instruction, presentation or study – 50 minutes of presentation/participation/study per hour is
undertaken – No activity under a half hour is accepted for credit – A qualifying activity of 30 to 49 minutes would be reported
as 0.5 PDH – an activity of 50 to 70 minutes would be reported as 1.0
PDH. – PDH is sometimes called PDU(Professional Development
Unit)
1 CEU = 10 PDHs29 05/03/2023
IEEE Certificates Program
Learning Unit (LU) – Used by American Institute of Architects 's Continuing
Education Systems (AIA/CES) – Based on a 60-minute hour – Time beyond 60 minutes is recorded in quarter hour
increments – (e.g., 1 hour 45 minutes =1.75 LUs) – Programs may qualify for Health, Safety and Welfare
(HSW) credit – 1 CEU = 10 LUs – 1 PDH = 1 LU

How much does it cost to provide CEUs? – No cost to IEEE Organization Units – Rationale:
We seek to increase engagement and relevance of IEEE activities to professionals
We wish to enhance the value of IEEE learning events and attract more participants
Non-IEEE organizational units are charged for this service – $20 per person/per event
