advancement of technology. With well over 4 lac members who
live and work in over 160 countries and more than 125 years of
existence, IEEE has the worlds largest knowledge base on
engineering and technology. Over 75,000 student members
contribute to IEEEs growth. IEEE enables to disseminate a widevariety of technology information by holding more than 350
international conferences annually and has published over 30%
of the worlds literature in electrical engineering and
computing. IEEE also maintains a leadership role in engineering
practice, offering more than 900 active industry standards.
IEEE's Constitution defines the purpose of the organization as
"scientific and educational, directed toward the advancement of the
theory and practice of Electrical, Electronics, Communications and
Computer Engineering, as well as Computer Science, the allied
branches of engineering and the related arts and sciences."
To foster an interest in the engineering profession, the IEEE also

About IEEE-NIEC (formerly BOSON)
IEEE-NIEC, the Student Branch of IEEE in the Northern IndiaEngineering College was established on 20th February 2009, by
our principal Prof. Dr. Yamini S. under the guidance of Dr.
Prerna Gaur, IEEE Delhi Section Student Activities Committee.
The contribution of IEEE-USIT (under GINI Project) in setting
up our student branch is also worth appreciating.
IEEE-NIEC aims at imparting technical knowledge as well as
leadership skills to ensure that they dont step outside with an
engineering degree but with vibrancy to develop innovative
solutions and to meet the challenges of todays professional
environment. It provides a non-suffocating environment to the
students in their respective field and fills them with
encouragement and enthusiasm to excel towards their goal.
The journey of IEEE-NIEC since its inauguration in March 2009
has been eventful one, and our student branch has grown from
a seedling to a tree owing to the persistent efforts put in by its
student members and teachers. The members of IEEE-NIEC
have been persistent in their efforts in developing the studentoriented society, and have organized various events to
accomplish its objectives.

Milia University, DelhiA team of 3 members visited
Jamia Milia Islamia University
on 30th September 2009 for
the Quarterly GINI meet. The
active participation by the
team members helped in
gaining more knowledgeabout GINI. Dignitaries from
HQ and Delhi section
attended the meet. GINI stands for Global Integrated Network of IEEE.
R10 GINI was officially launched during the R10 Student Congress held
in Madras in January 2008. R10 GINI started with one mentor Kerala
section, which implemented LINK, a similar network in Kerala, and 5
pilot sections, Madras, Hyderabad, Delhi, New Zealand and Pakistan. The motto behind GINI is simple to enhance and encourage
communication between student branches of a section initially, spreading
this to the country and finally IEEE Region 10. This is achieved by
bringing student branches to work together, by promoting effective inter
communication between student
branches, which will lead to increase
in the IEEE activities, reactivation of
sick student branches, formation of
new branches, effective transfer of
responsibilities among branch officers
and making the IEEE membership
more valuable to the student
member.

20th Oc t 09: Mirage- the virtual
rea lity, Intra-c ollege short movie
competitionMovies are a complicated collision of literature, theatre, music and all the visual arts
- Anonymous
Keeping in mind the importance of movies in
todays world especially youth, the IEEE Student
Branch at Northern India Engineering College,
New Delhi conducted an intra-college short
movie making competition MIRAGE: a virtual reality in the first week of October
2009. It was also the first event of its kind hosted by IEEE-NIEC in the college.
The competition encouraged the students to direct and submit a short movie of 10
minutes on any topic of their choice. MIRAGE provided the students with a platform
to showcase their talent; a stage where they were free to put forth their views and
variety of philosophies. The competition motivated them to reflect whatever is
happening in the world and what as a human being having variety of emotions and
ever quizzing mind, think. Not only it tested their creativity but also it tickled theirartistic n directorial genes. MIRAGE aimed to serve as a medium to provide an
insight to what the students think and feel strongly about. It served as a ground
where a simple story could touch many hearts, a chance to touch the nerve of
something that is not bringing forth to avoid public wrath.. Something that is
plaguing our minds and societies for years, something that needs to be answered. It
reiterated the fact that movies can also act as catalyst if rightly depicted.
The entries started from the 1st week of October09 and continued till 20th October
09.
Students from all the branches and years participated enthusiastically. Total 6 movies
were entered.
MIRAGE acted as a breath of fresh air for students. As rightly said a movie is a
spiritual and social X-ray of its time and the students justified this fact by
showcasing their thoughts. They had myriad of ideas which they tried hard to
express through their movies. The movie themes ranged from comedy to satirical and
even tragic, but the essence of giving a message especially those concerning youth

and the society were omnipresent. Even though the duration was limited, still they
succeeded to a great extent. The best movies were adjudged and awarded by the
then-chairperson of IEEE-NIEC.
The first prize was awarded to Rahul Malhotra and Rajat Sharma (EEE 2nd year) for
the movie The Wrong Choice! a movie about what is wrong or right. Its about
how our little decisions can make the difference of hell and heaven. How rules are
same for good and evil, a thought-provoking movie.
The second prize went to Sagar and group (2nd year) for the movie The Line a
movie which tells us about how special is ones college in everybodys life. How
every moment spent in the college becomes significant in our memories the day we
leave it. It is about the line that separates the end of college life and beginning of
new life when one gets a job. A funny yet heart touching movie.
The event was enjoyed and liked by all. We were highly motivated and plan to
conduct more of such events in the near future and will definitely prove to be an asset
to IEEE.

R10 SAC website
Contest
OUR WEBSITE SECURED
6TH POSITION
The IEEE Region-10 website
contest is a yearly
opportunity for student
branches in Asia Pacific to
interact, compete and learn
from one another.
Motivation behind this
Website Competition:
Electronic communication
among IEEE members has
been one of the IEEE main
concerns during the recent
times. Student branches are
visible to the world and arejust one click away. It is very important for the IEEE student branches to
communicate with their student members and other branches in an electronic way.
Having a Student Branch Website is a good tool to achieve this goal.
Our IEEE Student Branch Website ( developed by Hemant Tulsani ECE 08-12 ) was
able to fetch 6th position having a tie with Dadi Institute of Engineering &
Technology, Hyderabad for 67 points, only 9 points away from the first position
bagged by DAIICT, Gujarat ( 76 points).
However, considering the fact that it was the first time Our IEEE Branch has
participated in Region-10 Website Contest, the performance is Remarkable.
No Doubt, We will be participating in the same event for the upcoming years and try
to improve our performance.
