Elham Manea’s The Perils of Nonviolent Islamism describes the ways in which nonviolent forms of Islamist fundamentalism in European democracies lay the groundwork for Islamist terrorism. Through a persuasive mixture of autobiography, explanatory frameworks, case studies, personal interviews, and careful readings of source material, Manea details how Islamist groups have exploited the openness of democracies and multiculturalist attitudes in order to create closed Islamist communities. These groups today are transforming Islam in the West into a unified fundamentalist religion that ultimately promotes attitudes that lead

Praise for Elham Manea’s The Perils of Nonviolent Islamism“This book sharpens our understanding, both theoretically and empirically, broadens our horizons, and provides a stirring wake-up call to policymakers on what is really at stake in this conflict.…This is one of few books that, in our polarized environment, has the potential to capture the attention of both idealistic human rights activists and seasoned public officials.”—Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Research Fellow, the Hoover Institution, Stanford University

“Elham Manea’s book is an ardent warning against the power-conscious and strategically effective activities of the nonviolent Islamists, who increasingly dominate Islam-related state politics and public dialogue in Western Europe.” —Matthias Küntzel, author of Jihad and Jew-Hatred: Islamism, Nazism, and the Roots

Civilizational States and Liberal Empire—Bound to Collide?

The 2022 Annual Telos-Paul Piccone Institute Conferencenew date: April 1–3, 2022 ◆ New York, NY

Keynote Speaker: Christopher Coker, London School of Economics

Civilization seems to be the new pivot of international relations. Brexit, Trump, and the resurgence of Russia and China have put culture and civilizational identity at the heart of both domestic politics and foreign policy. From the identity politics that is sweeping much of the West to the pushback against the supposed universalism of the West’s liberal empire in much of the non-Western world, civilizational norms are as important as military might and economic prosperity. At a time of heightened tensions between great powers that view themselves as guarantors of civilizational identity, are civilizational states and the Western liberal empire bound to collide? This conference aims to bring greater conceptual clarity to current debates by examining some of the key terms, notably the relationship between “culture” and “civilization” and between “values” and “norms,” as well as by exploring practical ways for civiliza-tions to enter into a meaningful dialogue with one another.

Democracy and Populism: The Telos Essaysby Alain de Benoist

The crisis of democracy, the consequences of neoliberalism and globalization, the limits of sovereignty, and of course the rise of populism: few thinkers have given more sustained attention to these matters than the French author Alain de Benoist. Democracy and Populism collects de Benoist’s essays from the journal Telos, where many of his writings first appeared in English translation. Reading de Benoist in Telos provides access to a distinctive transatlantic intellectual dialogue and to an array of prescient insights into the current political condition on both continents.

The Tyranny of Values and Other Textsby Carl SchmittTranslated by Samuel Garrett Zeitlin Edited by Russell A. Berman and Samuel Garrett Zeitlin

Covering topics such as the political significance of universalism and jurisprudence, the meaning of the partisan, the world-historical significance of the Cold War, the deterioration of metaphysics into “values,” the relationship between theoretical concepts and concrete historical situations, and his views on thinkers such as Machiavelli, Bodin, and Rousseau, this wide-ranging collection of Carl Schmitt’s essays establish a revealing counterpoint to his more formal work.

Anthropocene Alerts: Critical Theory of the Contemporary as Ecocritiqueby Timothy W. Luke

From the late 1970s, Timothy W. Luke has developed critical analyses of significant social, political, and cultural conflicts, with a particular focus on the entangled politics of culture, economy, and nature. Luke’s “ecocritiques,” many of which first appeared in Telos, advance a critical theory of the contemporary that takes aim at our ongoing ecological crisis, a period marked by rapid climate change, extensive biodiversity loss, and deep ecospheric damage. This collection documents crucial moments in Luke’s project of ecocritique as well as the commitment of Telos to environmental criticism, political theory, and policy analysis.
