IdenTITy

Claremont Lincoln University

identity is straightforward and

impactful. The clean typography

and geometric shape express

the contemporary value of the

University. This identity can be

expanded to the other schools

that are currently and will be

affiliated with the University. The

strong solid square serves as an

anchor in various layouts.

Claremont School of Theology

reflects the visual language of the

Claremont Lincoln University

identity. The Christian cross

symbolizes the orientation of

the school, and red has been a

long-standing traditional color

for the school.

When new schools become

affiliated with Claremont Lincoln

University, new identities can

be added using the same visual

language. An icon on the upper

left corner will be used to

communicate religious tradition.

Clear spaCe

A minimum clear space

must surround the Claremont

Lincoln University and

Claremont School of Theology

visual identities. No other design

elements may be positioned

within this space. More clear

space is always preferred.

Use the height of the type for the

clear space around the logos.

This principle applies to the

center logos as well.

Minimum Size for claremont lincoln university and claremont School of theology Identities

Minimum Size for claremont lincoln university center logos

To preserve the integrity of the

Claremont Lincoln University and

Claremont School of Theology’s

visual identities, we must

ensure that the logos are always

recognizable and readable, and

that the visual identity stands

out from other design elements.

Reproductions below this

minimum size are not permitted

since the letter forms may begin

to fill in, thereby compromising

readability.

The minimum allowable

reproduction sizes are shown

at left, based on the size of the

width and height of the logo

square. This rule applies to the

center logos as well.

Colors for future logos

The selected palette at left provides

a foundation for color consistency

across diverse types of layouts.

primary Colors

The primary color for Claremont

Lincoln University is bright

green, and the primary color for

Claremont School of Theology is

red reflecting the tradition of the

school. Medium Gray is used for

the center logos.

secondary Colors

Black and white may be used

only when the primary identity

colors are not available. Dark

Gray can be used as a supporting

color in stationery and brochures.

pMs Colors

For the University Green and

CST Red, it is ideal to match the

colors to coated chips, even when

uncoated paper is used, because

uncoated colors are not as intense

as coated colors. Ink drawdowns

are recommended to achieve

consistent colors.

For the Medium and Dark Grays,

and the colors for the future logos,

use coated colors, when coated

paper is used, and use uncoated

colors when uncoated paper is

used. Please note PMS numbers

are not always identical between

coated and uncoated colors.

CMyK reproduction

Since differences in substrate

and process can affect color, the

CMYK equivalents provided at

left are guidelines only.

RGB in JPG files

RGB values in JPG files may shift

slightly due to file compressions.

It is acceptable to have one or two

points of difference from the RGB

specifications at left.

Colors shown throughout this

manual are for demonstration

purposes only. For accurate colors,

refer to the current edition of the

PANTONE® Color Formula Guide.

The success of the Claremont

Claremont School of Theology

visual identities depends upon

all of us treating it with respect,

using it consistently and never

jeopardizing its integrity

with hurried solutions. Every

or manipulated in any way.

The examples at left illustrate

unacceptable uses of the visual

do not reproduce the identity at a size smaller than those specified on page 5.

do not enclose the identity within boxes or shapes defined by white or any other background color, in effect creating a new lock-up.

do not set the identity on a background that will detract from its readability.

file extensions

eps files are for both Mac and

PC platforms. These EPS files are

for offset printing, and are vector

files that can be enlarged to any

size. While the term “high res” is

not applicable to vector art, these

EPS files are the equivalent for

logos. If you are asked for a high

res logo, most likely, you should

provide an EPS file.

jpgs have a small file size with 72

dpi resolution (low res). Instead

of CMYK or PMS, these are

RGB. JPGs are commonly used

in Microsoft Word, Websites

and PowerPoint presentations.

If placed on a dark background,

you will see an undesirable white

rectangle around the JPG. You

should use PNGs to avoid this.

EPS

PNG

PDF

JPG

pngs are RGB files that have a

transparent background. These

are used for electronic templates

such as Microsoft Word, Websites

and PowerPoint presentations.

PNGs are often more versatile

and higher quality than JPGs.

pdfs are also RGB files that work

well on Mac. on a Mac platform,

they are versatile and flexible.

Color formats for print

CMyK files are used for jobs

that require a 4-color process. In

4-color process printing, every

color is derived from a mixture

of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow,

and Black. CMYK is required

for printing any full color

photographs.

grayscale files are used when

the option for color is not

available. While these are black

and white files, they also include

shades of gray.

line art files are used when the

option for color is not available.

Unlike Grayscale files, this

artwork is either all black, or all

white. These files may also be

used when a greater contrast is

needed when placing a logo on a

color background or image.

pMs (PANToNE®) is a color

standard system used for

matching colors. These files are

mainly used for offset printing

with specific PMS inks (PMS is

also used for silk screening, letter

press, engraving). For matching,

refer printers and other suppliers

to the current editions of

PANToNE® Color Publications.

It is strongly recommended that

drawdowns (ink swatches) be

requested with each print job to

ensure that the specified PMS

colors are accurate.

pMs Coated (PMSC) files are used

when jobs are printed on coated

paper (most magazines and

packaging).

pMs uncoated (PMSU) files are

used when jobs are printed on

uncoated paper (most stationery

and newsprint).

Color format for screen

rgb is how all colors are

derived on monitors (e.g., Web,

Powerpoint, and television) and

stands for Red, Green, and Blue.

Using the correct name of Claremont Lincoln University is of utmost importance in establishing

brand identity within the institution and in the marketplace. The following editorial guidelines will

help achieve these goals.

The phrase “Claremont Lincoln University” should:

• Be used in its entirety on first reference.

• Be referenced as “Claremont Lincoln” or “the University” (with a capital U) on second and

subsequent reference.

• Not be abbreviated as “CLU” in any formal publications, electronic communication, or other forms of

internal or external representations (to avoid confusion with other institutions with the same initials)

• Not be preceded by the definite article, such as “The Claremont Lincoln University is stellar,” or

“The Claremont Lincoln University student body is stellar.”

• Not be used in the possessive, such as “Claremont Lincoln University’s student body is stellar,” or

“Claremont Lincoln’s student body is stellar.” The proper noun “University” may be used in the

possessive, such as “The University’s student body is stellar.”

Established in 2011, Claremont Lincoln University is an interreligious graduate school that offers accredited

degrees, advanced certificates, and custom-designed curricula for effective leadership across cultural, religious,

spiritual and secular value systems. The new University also serves as the hub of a history-making consortium

of professional schools that educates religious leaders in their respective traditions while sharing a common

curriculum for understanding across religious, intellectual and cultural boundaries. For more information, go

CoMMon language

MulTIrelIgIous vs. InTerrelIgIous

Note: no hyphens in either word

• Multireligious: refers to the presence of multiple religions in a particular situation (for example, a

multireligious neighborhood; our multireligious world). In this context, the religions may or may not

interact; they simply exist in the same time and space.

• Interreligious: refers to interaction between and/or among religious groups or individuals. It implies a

multireligious context, in that multiple religions are needed for them to interact.

• Interfaith, multifaith: These words generally should be avoided in University materials unless they have

external references (for example, to outside groups).

MuslIM vs. IslaMIC

• Muslim: refers to the adherents (people) of Islam; can be a noun (“Muslims”) and an adjective

when it refers to people (“Muslim leadership”). It should never be spelled in any other way (for

example, “Moslem”)

• Islamic: refers to the religious tradition of Islam, the body of Muslim believers. It can be a noun (“the

tradition of Islam”) and an adjective (“Islamic law”). Note: The “Nation of Islam” is a particular sect

of Islam in America and should never be used to describe all of Islam.

affIlIaTe InsTITuTIons

Independent institutions (e.g. Claremont School of Theology, Academy for Jewish Religion, California) in the

University consortium shall usually be referred to as “Affiliate Institutions” or “Affiliates” on second reference.

(This guide will be updated as more names are added to the consortium.)

• academy for jewish religion, California: This name must be used in its entirety on first reference in order

to distinguish it from an institution in New York with a similar name. Note the use of “for” (not “of”)

as well as the correct placement of the comma. The name can be abbreviated on subsequent references

to “the Academy” (note the capitalization) or “AJRCA” with no punctuation.

• Claremont school of Theology: This name must be used in its entirety on first reference and can be

shortened to “the School” (note the capitalization) on subsequent references. The abbreviation “CST”

should be used sparingly, if at all, in public references.
