The CCHT and new housing technologies

In this latest edition of Ideas you will find information on insulation, railings, paint,

flooring, siding, moulding, bath products, interior doors, windows, exterior doors, garage doors and last, but not least, roofing materials.

It is conceivable that some of these fine product offerings may have even been put to the test at the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology (CCHT) research facility in Ottawa. Jointly operated by the National Research Council (NRC), Natural Resources Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the goal is a worthy one: accelerate the development and acceptance of new housing technology into the marketplace.

To that end, twin test houses have been built on the campus of the NRC that measure the effects of new energy technologies for the residential sector.

“The CCHT supports manufacturers in their product research and development, and helps bring insights to builders and homeowners,” organizers state on the CCHT Web site. “Since its launch in 1998, more than 50 housing-

related technologies have been assessed at the Centre. Products tested range from energy-efficient lighting and high-performance windows to innovative natural gas systems.”

They add that having two identical houses allows researchers to change one variable in a house and measure the changes in energy use compared with the other: “To replicate the conditions of a typically suburban home, a ‘family’ of four live in the house. Two adults simulated by 60W light bulbs and 40W light bulbs representing children give off the same amount of heat as a family would.

“All of the typical activities of occupants are mimicked. This includes water use, energy consumption by the major appliances in the house such as the dishwasher and the stove, and use of smaller appliances like toasters and microwaves.”

This type of research can certainly help a supplier once put to the test, but more importantly, the homeowner embarking on an external or internal renovation that will ultimately make their home that much more energy efficient.
