A good boss should be fair, treat employees withrespect, be supportive, and be understanding. A goodboss should know her employees (by name!), andmake her employees feel valued. Moreover, becausemost of us expect our boss to set an example, a goodboss should work hard, be honest and truthful, andnot offload tasks on his employees, because he's toolazy to do them himself.

One of the key factors in our job happiness or unhappiness is our

relationship with our boss – the person to whom we report in our company’sorganization chart. A good boss can make a bad job tolerable or evenenjoyable, and a bad boss can turn an otherwise gratifying occupation into amiserable experience.

1. Quick to blame others: At the first sign of something going wrong, they look for a scapegoat. Their first priority is to protectthemselves. Blame is spread over team members, customers,

suppliers, well -almost anybody other than themselves2. Quick to hog credit: Instead of sharing credit, they presentinformation in such a way to suggest that they have been responsiblefor every success. They bask in the glory though the real work hasbeen done by others.

3. Unwilling to decide, procrastinate: Really tough to get adecision from them, mainly because they spend hugeamounts of time and effort in playing their cards asdescribed above. If they get blamed for the delay, theblame is passed on to others. They would rather use thepassage of time to solve problems rather than act

vigorously and pro actively to resolve them.

4. Dump rather then delegate: Under the guise of delegation, low priority or the most difficult work tasks are dumped ontheir team members. The more visible and glamorous partsof the task are kept to themselves. Dumping takes many forms including passing on tasks without adequatebriefing about its importance or priority.

5. Not worthy of trust: Simply stated, they cannot be trusted. They ask for information, opinions and views, which they then retail depending on the perceived value of the idea.Problems shared are not kept confidential and they lose notime in passing them on as pieces of gossip .

6. Add no value to their team: Team members do not get the value addition they look up to in a boss. Due to a lack of competence, they are not able to solve issuesraised by team members, not able to offer alternates and not able to guide them intimes of difficulty.7. Poor role model: They don’t walk the talk. They say the organization values some

trait but behave in ways totally contrary to stated values. They exhort others tofollow norms of behaviour that they don’t follow themselves. They have one rule forthemselves and a quite different other for team members.

1. Good Listener - A good boss should be a good listener to manage people.Only then he/she can truly assess the employees’ needs and meet them.  2. The Blame Stops Here -A good boss when confronted with a problem willnot point fingers at one of their employees. They absorb the blame on

themselves and the whole department. Finger pointing goes back to gradeschool. Problems could also show issues within the department which themanager should be taking responsibility for. 3. Gets Their Hands Dirty - When the boss can roll up their sleeves andhelp their employees when deadlines arise, they are a great boss. They truly understand that unless the job is done and done by all, they have not done

their job.

4. Mentor - A good boss is one that becomes the mentor of their employees. This is askill and trait that businesses are not looking for in managers, but all the good oneshave. They grow and develop their team to be the best that they can be.5. Communicate - Since communication skills are at an all-time low, a manager whocan communicate is a gem. They keep their employees informed so that they are not

caught unawares and the whole department look bad. This also goes to keeping intouch with each employees individually instead of waiting to their review time so thatany issues can be addressed earlier.6.Good morale - You can also tell who has the good boss, by the morale in thedepartment. Not saying that they won't have their low times, but they will enjoy their job altogether.

7. Provides Resources - A good manager makes sure that their employees

have the resources on hand to get their jobs done. There are times when thecompany does not provide those resources so the manager you want is one whotries to think outside that box and still manage to help the group get the jobdone.8. Knows What's Going On - A manager should not be caught unawares of issues and even accomplishments in their department. If they are, then they

are out of touch with them.9. Recognizes Employees - A good boss regularly lets their employees knowthat they are appreciated and not just at the times of their yearly reviews. You'lllose good employees if you do that.10.Understanding - A good boss is one that realizes that when emergenciescome up in our personal lives that they should be more important .
