IDC FutureScape: Worldwide IoT 2020
Predictions "IoT is increasingly being viewed as
an enabling technology for artificial
intelligence and process automation.
Our IoT team sees this trend
growing, but there are still many
hurdles for IoT deployments to
overcome before it becomes an
afterthought. IT decision makers
have to consider the data, security,
and integration implications, among
others, as they look to scaling IoT
investments in 2020 and beyond.“
Carrie MacGillivray, group vice president, IoT, 5G, and
Mobility at IDC
#1 KPI’S
In 2020, 90% of organizations will have determined
key performance indicators to measure the success
of their IoT projects.
IDC Advice: Encourage IoT business owners to engage with IT early in project planning to ensure that goals — and subsequent measure
of success — are aligned at the outset.
#2 INTEGRATION
By 2021, 75% of Organizations Embarking on an IoT
Project Will Work with a Systems Integrator to
Strategize, Plan, Deploy, and/or Manage the Initiative
IDC Advice: A cross-department, or cross-functional, team should be created to determine IoT initiative goals and outcomes and
determine key functional requirements. This team should be the resources for partner integrators to turn these requirements into
technical specifications.
#3 APPS
By 2022, 70% of New Enterprise IoT Applications
Built on IoT Platforms Will Leverage Container
Deployment
IDC Advice: Research and understand container orchestration platforms that can automate container deployment, schedule and scale
containerized applications, and help coordinate application development across different environments.
#4 THE EDGE
By 2023, 70% of Enterprises Will Run Varying Levels
of Data Processing at the IoT Edge. In Tandem,
Organizations Will Spend over $16 Billion on IoT
Edge Infrastructure in That Time
IDC Advice: Have a plan to pool, to partition, and of action on data created from endpoints. The categorical approach to data
management will need to be front and center, particularly as it relates to which data is analyzed and processed at the edge and which
data can be piped to a larger datacenter, or even the cloud.
#5 SECURITY
By 2023, 20% of Cybersecurity Incidents Will Stem
from Smart City IoT Device Deployments, Forcing
Double-Digit Increases in Cybersecurity Software and
Staff Training Budgets
IDC Advice: Conduct a thorough discovery exercise to document existing network-enabled devices and their connectivity, the
communications protocols, and device firmware.
#6 FIELD SERVICE
To Lessen Critical Equipment Failures, by 2024, 40% of
Manufacturers Will Use Field Asset IoT Data to Intelligently
Diagnose Issues and Resolve Autonomously, Improving
Unplanned Downtime by 25%
IDC Advice: Establish workflows that enable the identification of a future failure, the generation of a work order, and the automated
execution of the service fix.
#7 AI
By 2023, 70% of IoT Deployment Will Include AI
Solutions for Autonomous or Edge Decision Making,
Supporting Organizations' Operational and Strategic
Agendas
IDC Advice: There are many ways with the development and integration of AI can be stalled. At a basic level, businesses and end users
need to have a certain level of trust and the objectivity and efficiency of AI algorithms. It's a part of the AI nature to be self-learning,
which creates a sense of a black-box process, which can potentially create an issue of mistrust.
#8 DATA DELUGE
By 2025, There Will Be 79ZB of Data Created by
Billions of IoT Devices, Causing Organizations to
Reevaluate Their Data Governance, Retention, and
Usage Policies
IDC Advice: Organizations should consider appointing a chief data officer to champion the change and to lead the data governance
strategy and road map.
#9 DIGITAL TWIN
By 2025, 60% of Manufacturers Will Use IoT
Platforms with Digital Innovation Platforms to
Operate Networks of Asset, Product, and Process
Digital Twins for a 25% Reduction in Cost of Quality
IDC Advice: Leverage IoT platforms as the hub of data collation, federation, and analytics "digital bridge" between physical and digital
twins.
#10 CONNECTIVITY
By 2023, Enterprises Will Struggle to Manage All the
Different Access Types Used to Connect Their IoT
Endpoints, with 75% Adopting More than One
Connectivity Type
IDC Advice: Put in place an IoT connectivity company strategy with the objective to find the perfect balance between connectivity types
features, costs, and availability depending on the company IoT maturity and use case road map.
