Three-Dimensional Nonwoven Fabrics and their ApplicationsProfessor Subhash Anand MBE, The University of Bolton, Bolton, UK

The council chairman of The Textile Institute, Manchester, UK andProfessor of Centre for Materials Research and Innovation of TheUniversity of Bolton is in deed the number one scientist of technicaltextiles having number of inventions and patents. Prof. Anand said that theworld nonwovens market has more than doubled in the last 10 years, from3.19 million tonnes in 1999 to 6.32 million tonnes in 2009. It was US$22.4billion in value in 2009 and 2.67 kg per capita annual consumption inEurope. In his paper he discusses recent advances in 3D nonwoventechnologies and products and demonstrates that nonwovens are the mostexciting and expanding market worldwide and make a crucial contribution in the enhancement of quality of life in themodern world today and in the foreseeable future. He elaborately described the nonwoven manufacturing technologiesand also nicely shown the growing trends of nonwoven use. He informed that total fibre used in traditional textiles isbeing out paced by the total fibre use of nonwoven sector. For the traditional textiles fibre consumption growth rate is3% per year while technical textiles fibre consumption is increasing by 7% per year. Professor Anand demonstrated thethree dimensional web formation techniques in the modern kunit and multiknit stitch bonding machines. He explainedthe properties of those fabrics with the added features for special applications.

conducted by the supervision of two professors T. Tsuzuki and X.Wang ofthe same university. Her research signifies to Morphology of bamboo,Crystalline behaviour of bamboo, Chemical structure of bamboo, UVshielding characteristics of bamboo and Antimicrobial activity of bamboo. It is bamboo because in all aspect of their research they are very strict to be“Green” always and as bamboo possesses natural antimicrobial and UVshielding ability and the wearers experience instant moisture absorption and evaporation. The research came up withthe following points; Bamboo possesses micro gaps like capillary and cellulose I crystalline structure, Conventionaldegumming (removing lignin) is not an effective manufacturing process to retain the unique properties of raw bambooin textile fibres, Both raw bamboo and extractions have shown a UV shielding ability, particularly in the UVB region,Bamboo possesses natural antimicrobial properties but the active component is not water soluble. Ms. Afrin isundergoing with many more issues of bamboo and some other could not be explored fully as the research is in a patent.
