Recently two Independent Cat Society volunteers, Dr. Staci Trekles, ICS Board President, and Roberta Jocius, ICS Grants Chair, offered a ten-week Grant Writing Workshop for community members through the Graduate and Extended Learning (GEL) Office at Purdue University North Central (PNC). This class went through the many different aspects of the grant writing process, incuding everything from finding available grants to writing proposals and budgets, to using technology to tell a story. Generously, PNC offered to give half of the profits from the class tuition fees to the Independent Cat Society for the work of these dedicated volunteers, which equaled $850. The Independent Cat Society is grateful to have had a chance to work with Cassandra Boehlke and Rebecca Vogelpohl in the PNC Graduate and Extended Learning Office, and looks forward to more chances to partner with PNC in the future. For example, look for PNC’s own Chancellor Dworkin and his wonderful children’s book, The Dog and the Dolphin, at this year’s Book Sale! For the friends of the Independent Cat Society, a no-kill cat shelter Summer 2015 #146

Thanks to Purdue North Central

Adoptable cats, great articles, dates to remember, and more inside!

Keep an eye on http://www.pnc.edu/gel for repeat offerings and other great community courses, and join us on campus again on August 4 to learn from the author of The Power of Joy of Giving to Animals. ICS would like to thank its terrific Westville neighbor for extending its campus resources, time, and talents to our shelter community!

The ICS Book Sale : A don’t-miss event!

That’s right, our Annual Book Sale is coming up fast, and this year, you definitely don’t want to miss out! With our new venue at the National Guard Armory in Valparaiso (1502 Linwood Ave.), we will have plenty of space to spread out and make finding those perfect books that much more enjoyable. So, get ready to bring all of those textbooks, novels, biographies, reference books, music CDs, video games, and anything else you’d like to donate – we’ll even help you bring them inside!

Donations can be dropped off on Thursday, July 16 at the National Guard Armory from 11am - 4pm. You may also make arrangements with us to drop them off at our shelter prior to the event, if needed. Just contact us at [email protected] or 219-785-4936.

During the sale on July 17 and 18 (9am - 4pm both days), we’ll have plenty of things going on besides books, of course. You can enjoy a host of baked goods, live musical entertainment from our own Kimmy Ebert, and our wonderful gourmet “lunch boxes” made by our star volunteer chefs while you shop. Many of our shelter cats will be showing off their stuff as well on both days. You might just want to “sit a spell” and read with one of them!

Before you go, don’t forget to grab some of your cat’s favorite homemade catnip toys, and maybe something sparkly for yourself. This year’s raffles will include a host of great baskets and prizes, including a beautiful necklace donated by longtime ICS sponsor, Pyrrha Jewelry. This special charm, handmade in sterling silver, is intended to inspire creativity and higher thought – learn more about it at http://pyrrha.com/products/creativity.

Finally, this year’s book sale will also feature some great opportunities to learn from local authors. That’s right, the ICS community has lots of hardworking and bright people, in many ways, and several will be on hand to promote their works and perform book signings. President’s MessageThere are few events that I look forward to more each year than the ICS Book Sale. It’s a chance to not only help the cats and spend time with my many dear ICS friends, but also to dust off some of those old books on my shelf and share them with someone new. Many of the books I currently have came from the ICS Book Sale in years past, and I often wonder about the journey they have traveled to get to me. What stories could they really tell?

That got me to thinking – if our cats could talk, what might they be able to tell about us? What could we learn about our own behavior, how we handle stress and anxiety, and our attitudes toward life by looking at ourselves through the eyes of an animal?

If you want to learn more about yourself, your pets, and how you can help all animals live better lives in your community, consider joining ICS on August 4 at Purdue University North Central (1401 S. US 421, Westville), where we will be learning from Dr. Linda Harper, clinical psychologist, animal welfare advocate, and author of several insightful books, including The Power of Joy in Giving to Animals. ICS came to know Dr. Harper through one of our volunteers, who brought us several copies of her latest book to share. We enjoyed it so much that we started talking to Dr. Harper more, and got the opportunity to bring her to Indiana to share her experiences and ideas with us first-hand!

The three-hour workshop on August 4 will be held from 1pm to 4pm in the Library-Student-Faculty building, Room 02 (just downstairs when you enter the building). For directions to Purdue North Central and a campus map, please visit http://www.pnc.edu/maps/campus-map/. Registration is $20 (or $25 after July 19) and includes a copy of Dr. Harper’s book, as well as plenty of snacks! Additional proceeds go directly to ICS.

We hope that you will take some time out of your week to attend this inspirational workshop – bring your friends as well! You will learn many ways to work through the stress of helping animals and others in your community, which in turn will give you an even greater capacity to do good. To register, please visit http://www.catsociety.org or see us at the Book Sale!

Hi, I’m Corky, your Sponsor-a-Cat spokesman. My goal since I took this job has been to find each shelter cat a sponsor. Today, I have good news! We’re coming close. I can count on four paws the number of cats still waiting for their special person or family. After the last Mewsletter, seven of the 10 kitties pictured were adopted or sponsored. This month we feature 10 more cats waiting for a sponsor. Take a look at these beauties –maybe one can be your special cat?

Sponsors’ annual gifts are ICS’s most dependable source of monthly income. As prices of food and medical care continue to rise, the need for more sponsors increases as well. Please think about how your monthly gift can help us reach our goals by the end of 2015. A sponsor cat can be a wonderful gift for an older person who would enjoy having a kitty of their own without the costs of food, litter and vet care and the inconvenience of lugging bags of food and litter and changing boxes daily. Many of our sponsors have received their kitty’s picture as a birthday or Christmas gift. Scout troops and office staffs sponsor cats and help share our expenses.

If you want to help with the cats’ care, but aren’t able to commit to a full year’s sponsorship, you can still help by being a Sponsor-a-Cat Supporter. Just add “SAC Supporter” to the memo line of your check. You can sign up through the Web, too! Check out our website for info.

Take a look at the coupon at the bottom of this page and see if you would like to sponsor one of these kitties. We hope you will come amd visit if you can during weekend hours of 10-4 on Saturdays, and 1-4 on Sundays.

Sponsor-A-Cat!

I want to Sponsor-A-Cat from the Independent Cat Society I have enclosed a check for: __________ $180 for one year of Sponsor-A-Cat __________ $15 for the first month of Sponsor-A-Cat. I pledge to send $15 each month to Sponsor-A-Cat __________ I pledge to send the amount that fits my budget and feels “right” to Sponsor-A-Cat each month

The Catnip Party: A Story of Why YOU Matter to ICS by Jason Petrovich

Ask Ollie! by Viktoria Voller

Once upon a time…

There were twelve cats who all lived together in a small village near the edge of a beautiful forest. They played a lot, ate when they needed to and, like cats do, took many, many long naps. One night they were all sitting on logs around a campfire, eating mouse-smores, when

a black and white cat named Oreo had what he thought was the best idea ever. Everyone leaned in closer around the fire, eyes wide with eager anticipation as to what this idea could possibly be.

Oreo stood up on his log and started telling his friends about his big idea, with animated gestures, jumping up and down and getting more and more worked up until he was finally chasing his own tail! His idea was that they should throw a big party in three nights and invite the other cats from the village up the river. Everyone else thought that was a great idea, but they realized they didn’t have enough catnip for a big party. It was agreed that for the next three days each cat would go into the forest, gather some catnip and place it in an old barrel near the center of their village for the big party.

So three days came and went with each cat eagerly anticipating the party with their friends. They rented a karaoke machine, got plenty of milk for the bar and waited until all their friends arrived before breaking into the catnip barrel and really having a party! When that time finally arrived, all the cats gathered around the barrel and Oreo, the party’s organizer, announced it was time to open the barrel. The cats all looked on in anticipation as Oreo removed the barrel’s lid. His wide smile quickly evaporated, and disappointment swelled through the cats, when they realized the barrel was completely empty.

There was no catnip, they determined, because each cat believed that their contribution wouldn’t be missed, that the others would fill the barrel. The moral of this light-hearted but meaningful story is that we all matter when it comes to the ICS. No matter how much you can afford to give, volunteer or just be our advocate in your community, you can’t assume that your support of our cats isn’t needed or that it won’t be missed. Whether it’s joining one of our great volunteer programs, making your best-possible charitable gift, including us in your estate plan or just talking us up in your circle of friends, we all have contributions to make and they are all meaningful to the ICS.

Thanks for helping us to fill our barrel. Every time our cats need medical care, extra food, or extra loving care, you have risen to the challenge. It’s because of friends like you that our cats will always have plenty of catnip!

It’s time once again for a little advice from Ollie, our wonderful canine “guest columnist!”

Dear Ollie,I have read that finned, feathered or furry, pets are good for people’s health. They can lower blood pressure

during times of stress and pet owners are more physically fit and tend to be less lonely or fearful than those without pets. So, we are thinking about adopting a pet from one of our local shelters or buying one from a pet store. Actually, a dog would be nice because our family enjoys exercise. Can you tell me how to make the right decision about acquiring a pet?

Ken in San Pierre

Dear Ken,I don’t care if you buy a fish or a bird (not exotic) from a pet store, but I do care if you buy a dog or cat from one. Pet shops are markets for puppy and/or kitten mills and there is no reason to breed dogs and cats while millions are killed in shelters every year. If you want a purebred puppy, contact a reputable breeder or call a shelter. Shelters often have purebred animals too.

If you want a cat, there are many up for adoption through local shelters, including right here at the Independent Cat Society. Many of these outlets have domestic shorthair cats as well as the more exotic Siamese, Persian and other breeds.

Now, let’s get back to your question. Well, you’re on the right track, so to speak. If you want to get in shape or stay in shape, I don’t recommend acquiring a bird, they make terrible exercise partners. Cats are sort of nice if you’re gone a lot. But never try to bicycle with a cat scampering by your side. It just doesn’t work and it makes the cat very mad.

A fish is an excellent choice for you if you enjoy gazing at it through a glass container when you’re on your treadmill and never want it to climb in your lap or greet you at the door because it won’t. Though cats, fish, and birds can provide you with much the same kind of social support that people do, and they’re always there when you need them, if you want an exercise partner, there is nothing like a dog.

First, decide if you want a puppy or an older dog. Then, consider your living space and a dog’s size, exercise requirements, friendliness, assertiveness, and compatibility with children, if you have them in the household. Consider your budget and whether you need a dog that doesn’t shed because someone close to you has allergies. When visiting a shelter, don’t judge an animal by its behavior in a cage. Shelters are unfamiliar places for cats and dogs and scary for some, consequently, they may act differently there. Ask the shelter counselors about a animal’s history and let them help you choose the prefect pet for your family – which may actually be a cat!

Good luck, Ken, and consider adopting a dog for exercise and a magnificent cat that can make you accountable for whatever goals you set. Nobody but nobody disappoints a cat.
